Harden, Rockets rally to stuns LeBron-less Cavs, 106-100
By STEVE HERRICK
Associated Press
March 29, 2016
CLEVELAND (AP) The Cleveland Cavaliers appeared headed to a victory without LeBron James.
Then James Harden and the Houston Rockets had the final say.
Harden scored 27 points and the Rockets rallied from a 20-point deficit for a 106-100 victory over the Cavaliers, who rested James.
Cleveland led 62-42 early in the third quarter before Houston, fighting to make the playoffs, roared back. Harden scored 18 points in the fourth and Houston outscored Cleveland 35-16 in the period.
''That's what the first three quarters were for - to figure out what they were doing,'' Harden said. ''Even when we got down 20 points, we felt confident because they weren't shooting the ball well, even when they were winning.''
Dwight Howard's free throw with 2:13 left put Houston ahead 95-94. Harden's 3-pointer made it 98-94 before Kyrie Irving hit a 3-pointer with 1:30 left, making it a one-point game.
Both teams missed shots on their next possession, but Trevor Ariza's 3-pointer from the corner with 17 seconds left gave Houston a 101-97 lead.
Irving scored 31 points for Cleveland, which fell to 1-3 this season and 4-13 over the last two when James doesn't play.
The victory marked the 12th time Houston has come back from a double-figure deficit to win a game.
''I don't think we pay attention to the score at all times, honestly,'' Howard said. ''Tonight, we just kept fighting and pushing through, so I'm happy.''
Cleveland (52-22) leads Toronto by 2 1/2 games for the top seed in the East. The win moves Houston (37-38) a half-game ahead of Dallas for the eighth spot in the West.
''A few plays didn't go our way in the fourth quarter and that kind of cemented them getting back in the game,'' Irving said.
Michael Beasley scored 17 points while Ariza added 15 for Houston. Howard had 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Cavaliers forward Tristan Thompson, who played in his 362nd consecutive game, the longest streak in franchise history, scored 16 points and had 10 rebounds. Kevin Love added 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Houston won despite a dreadful night from the foul line where the Rockets were 21 of 42 and Howard was 7 of 22.
Cleveland led 91-83 on Thompson's basket with 6:36 to go, but the Rockets used a 12-0 run to go ahead. The Cavaliers didn't score again until Irving hit a free throw with 2:44 left. Irving's jumper with 2:17 to go tied the game at 94 but Houston then went ahead for good.
''They got stops and we couldn't make a shot,'' Cleveland coach Tyronn Lue said. ''They were able to get out in transition and that kind of got James Harden going. That got him feeling good about himself.''
Lue announced Monday that James would sit out the game as the Cavaliers try to rest their key players as much as possible over the final games of the regular season.
James, dressed in a suit, jumped up from the bench several times to encourage his teammates and joined Lue near midcourt to bark out instructions late in the second quarter.
Cleveland made six 3-pointers in the second and built a 59-40 halftime lead, but finished 14 of 40 from behind the arc.
SOUND STRATEGY
Rockets guard Patrick Beverly, who hit a critical 3-pointer in the fourth quarter, has a simple theory when it comes to Houston being successful.
''The thing about us is to not get in our own way,'' he said. ''When we do that, we're fine.''
IRON MAN
Lue praised Thompson for his durability during his consecutive-games played streak.
''There are a lot of times when guys are sick or you could be hurt and he still plays through the pain,'' Lue said. ''For a guy who plays hard like he does and takes the pounding he does, it means a lot. It's a tribute to him.''
TIP-INS
Rockets: Houston scored 14 points and made 5 of 18 shots in the second quarter. ... The Rockets snapped a four-game losing streak on the road.
Cavaliers: James is four points away from passing Dominique Wilkins for 12th place on the NBA's all-time scoring list. The four-time MVP has 26,665 career points.

Barea scores 26, Mavs beat Knicks to tie for 8th in West
March 30, 2016
DALLAS (AP) Justin Anderson slightly exaggerated his compliment about teammate J.J. Barea.
''The guy's a cold-blooded killer,'' Anderson said, ''and he only stands about 5 feet tall.''
Barea - all 6 feet of him - scored 26 points and made the go-ahead layup with 49.9 seconds left as the Dallas Mavericks rallied in the fourth quarter to beat the New York Knicks 91-89 on Wednesday night.
Dallas' win, combined with Utah's loss to Golden State, left the Jazz, Mavericks and Houston Rockets tied for seventh place in the Western Conference.
Carmelo Anthony scored 31 points for New York and Derrick Williams added 15 in his third start of the season with Kristaps Porzingis out with a shoulder injury.
Barea has stepped up with 44 points in Dallas' last two games, with Deron Williams missing four games with abdominal and groin strains and Chandler Parson lost two weeks ago to knee surgery.
''I've always been aggressive as a player,'' Barea said. ''Now, I know I'm going to have to get more minutes.''
Barea's basket put Dallas ahead 90-89 after the Mavericks trailed by seven points with 8 minutes left.
Anthony lost the ball out of bounds with the Knicks trailing by one. Raymond Felton made one free throw with 8.7 seconds left and the Knicks' Langston Galloway missed a long 3-point attempt on the final possession.
Wesley Matthews had 16 points and Dirk Nowitzki 11, hitting only 5 of 23 from the floor after going 4 for 17 in Monday's win at Denver.
''Now I'm 9 for 50, and we're 2-0,'' said Nowitzki, his math off by 10 shots. ''I'd rather have the two wins.''
Porzingis re-injured his right shoulder during Monday's game at New Orleans making a block. He is scheduled to have an MRI later this week.
New York lost starting point guard Jose Calderon to a quad injury late in the first half. X-rays were negative.
New York followed 71 percent shooting during the first period by hitting only 36 percent for the rest of the game. Dallas coach Rick Carlisle credited reserves David Lee and Zaza Pachulia for attacking New York's second unit.
Knicks coach Kurt Rambis said his team's offense got stagnant.
''The ball doesn't move around real easy and freely,'' Rambis said. ''We come down, and we're trying to force it in to either Melo or trying to force something to happen.''
ANOTHER FINE MESS?
Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said he has talked with the NBA about the criticism of game officials that he tweeted last week but wouldn't say if he has been fined.
''I don't think they're done,'' he said.
CLEARING THE AIR
Rambis said he and Arron Afflalo had an ''extensive conversation'' on Tuesday about Afflalo's recent benching. Afflalo had previously said he wasn't told before it happened while Rambis had said they'd talked.
''If I wasn't clear in the beginning to why he would be coming off the bench, that was my fault,'' Rambis said.
TIP-INS
Knicks: Sasha Vujacic, Afflalo's replacement, had seven points in 24 minutes compared to Afflalo's three points in 31 minutes. . It was Anthony's eighth 30-point game of the season.
Mavericks: With four rebounds, Nowitzki moved past David Robinson into 30th place on the career list with 10,499. . Dallas swept the two-game season series for the second straight season and has won 24 of its last 29 against New York.

Curry scores 31, Warriors beat Jazz 103-96 in OT for No. 68
By KAREEM COPELAND

March 30, 2016
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) The Warriors' countdown to become the winningest team in NBA history is down to five.
Stephen Curry scored 31 points, including six straight in overtime, and Golden State continued its historic run with a 103-96 victory over the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night.
The Warriors (68-7) surpassed last season's victory total and must win five of their final seven games to break the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls' record of 72-10.
''They are amazing. Nothing went our way really for most of the night,'' Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. ''They kept fighting. We always compete, that is the great thing about this team. That is why we have this record and our guys compete every night.
''I love our competitive spirit. No matter what our record ends up, it almost doesn't matter. It is just an incredible display of competition and fight night after night.''
Klay Thompson hit the tying 3-pointer with 15 seconds remaining in regulation after an offensive rebound and kick-out from Shaun Livingston after Thompson missed the previous attempt.
Curry took over with his burst that gave the Warriors a 99-93 lead. He then took a charge on Gordon Hayward with 1:21 left before setting up Draymond Green's dunk on the ensuing possession to put away the game.
''That is playoff-style basketball right there and to come out with a win when you play probably a C game, that says a lot about our team,'' Green said. ''(The record) is something we want to do, we've spoken on this. It is no secret. It will be a cool thing to do, but we have to worry about getting better each and every night. I think if we worry about that the wins will take care of themselves.''
The Jazz (37-38) fell into a tie with the Houston Rockets for the No. 7 slot in the Western Conference playoff race.
Curry had seven rebounds and four assists, while Thompson finished with 18 points.
Hayward led the Jazz with 21 points and Rodney Hood added 20. Rudy Gobert finished with 11 points and 18 rebounds.
''We're pretty frustrated right now, but we've got seven more games,'' Hood said. ''If we would have won, it was one win. This is one loss. We've got seven more that we need to come ready to play.
''The biggest thing we can't do is feel deflated and (have) it carry over to the next game against Minnesota.''
The Jazz shot just 34.8 percent in the first half, but only trailed 42-40 at the break. The Warriors managed just 16 points in the second quarter, a season low for that period.
''Our guys competed their (butts) off,'' Jazz coach Quin Snyder said. ''We played so hard, and played well.
''Give them credit. We gave them a second shot at it and Klay Thompson knocks it down.''
TIP-INS
Warriors: The Warriors have been held to 42 or fewer points in the first half just three times in 2015-16. ... Curry has hit a 3-pointer in an NBA-record 145 straight regular-season games.
Jazz: Alec Burks missed his 47th consecutive game with a fractured fibula. Snyder said they're being conservative with his return. ... Derrick Favors left the game in the third quarter with right knee soreness and did not return. He is listed as questionable for Friday's game. ... Gobert has 37 rebounds combined in the last two games.
BRICK CITY
The Jazz missed 10 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter, leaving the door open for the Warriors' rally.
QUOTABLE
''I've said many times over the years that I didn't think that (Bulls) record would be broken, and it still may not be,'' Kerr said. ''We have a tough finish still to go in the last games. To be part of both situations is unreal. It's a pretty good stroke of fortune.''
SEE YOU SOON?
There's a strong chance the Warriors and Jazz could face each other in the first round. Curry said Wednesday was a good warm-up for that possibility.
''We know if we come back here in a couple of weeks in a playoff series, we know what the atmosphere will be like and how we need to play to win a series like that,'' he said.
