Porzingis scores career-high 29, Knicks top Bulls 115-101

CHICAGO (AP) Kristaps Porzingis had no sense that he was in for a special night when he went up for his first dunk in the first quarter.
Porzingis tied a career high with 29 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Carmelo Anthony added 24 points and the New York Knicks beat the Chicago Bulls 115-107 on Wednesday night. But Porzingis, the Knicks' 7-foot-3 rookie center, nearly had a shaky - and embarrassing - start.
''On the first dunk, I did not have my legs,'' he said. ''I almost missed it. I was OK physically and able to knock down shots. The ball was moving and I had some pretty good looks.''
Porzingis was one point short of becoming the first rookie since Patrick Ewing to put up 30 points and 10 rebounds in one game for the Knicks.
''I looked up at the scoreboard in the fourth quarter and saw how many (points) I had, but I didn't know about the record,'' Porzingis said. ''I don't want to force up a shot just to break a record.''
Porzingis displayed an inside-outside game that the Bulls defense couldn't handle. He was 3 of 6 from 3-point range, which opened up the rest of the floor for his teammates.
In the front end of a back-to-back with the Knicks, the Bulls failed to complete a sweep of their four-game homestand and dropped behind the Detroit Pistons in the Eastern Conference standings for the eighth and final playoff spot.
Bulls forward Jimmy Butler, who was held to just seven points on 3-of-11 shooting, disagreed with coach Fred Hoiberg when he said the Bulls were outworked. He put the blame on his own shoulders.
''I see other things wrong, but that's what he is supposed to say,'' Butler said. ''He's supposed to say it's a team thing. I don't think right now, I know this is a team game, but if one of your so-called best players is not doing what their supposed to do, that's what is going to happen.
''You've seen the way I've been playing lately. It's sad. My teammates won't say it, my coaches won't say it.''
Nikola Mirotic scored a career-high 35 points for the Bulls, and Derrick Rose added 21. Mirotic was 9 of 13 from 3-point range and tied a franchise best for made 3-pointers.
The Knicks led by as many as 22 in the second half. Rose and Mirotic tried to start a late rally, but each was answered by Porzingis and Anthony.
Rose got the Bulls within 10 late in the fourth, but Porzingis hit a jumper. Mirotic made a 3-pointer to get it within eight at 109-101 with 3:07 left, but Anthony followed with a 3 from the corner.
The Knicks were 14-of-25 from 3-point range.
After establishing his outside game in the first half, Porzingis flashed through the lane for a dunk in the third quarter.
''He seems to be alive again,'' Knicks coach Kurt Rambis said. ''He looked like he went through a period where his legs were dead.''
The Knicks led 57-55 at the half. Porzingis scored 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including 3 of 4 from 3-point range. Rose led the Bulls with 12 points.
PLAYOFFS?
Butler isn't too concerned about the postseason picture. ''No, I've got to worry about my team,'' he said. ''I've got to worry about myself. If we win enough games, we'll be in the right (playoff) position.''
SECOND THOUGHTS?
Anthony isn't rethinking his decision when he was a free agent two years ago and opted to stay with New York over Chicago. ''No, not at all,'' he said. ''It was close (to happening). It was close, real close. That's all I can say about it.''

Knicks: Anthony, who missed Sunday's loss to Sacramento with a migraine, scored 10 points with five assists in the first half.
Bulls: Before the game, Hoiberg said Butler is not having any issues with his knee and he is not over compensating. ''His knee feels great and he is not,'' Hoiberg said. ''He has responded very well to the plan that was put in place and has responded very well to the treatment.'' Butler suffered a strained left knee that kept him out for about a month. ... Before the game, Hoiberg addressed the Iowa State men's basketball team. Hoiberg, former head coach and player for the Cyclones, left Iowa State for the Bulls after Tom Thibodeau was fired last season. Iowa State plays No. 1 seed Virginia in Midwest Regional on Friday at the United Center. ... The Knicks outrebounded the Bulls 53-34.

NEW YORK (AP) The New York Knicks are playing spoiler - at the Chicago Bulls' expense.
Carmelo Anthony scored 26 points, Kristaps Porzingis had 19 and the Knicks beat the Bulls 106-94 on Thursday night to sweep the home-and-home series.
Derrick Williams added 13 points, Jose Calderon 12, and Arron Afflalo 11 for New York. The Knicks beat the Bulls 115-107 on Wednesday night in Chicago.
''We want to win every game possible to finish out the season,'' Williams said. ''If those wins mean other teams don't get into the playoffs, that's fine with us. With so many games left, we want to be the spoiler right now.''
Derrick Rose led Chicago with 30 points. Jimmy Butler had 19, and Taj Gibson 10.
''I don't want to criticize anybody, like trash teams - everybody is in the NBA for a reason,'' Gibson said. ''But we're playing against teams that are not playing for anything and we're just laying down.''
The Bulls are 1 1/2 games behind Detroit for the eighth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They led only one time in the game - at 8-7 on Gibson's short jumper.
''These are two extremely tough losses,'' Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg said. ''I wish I could tell you it was one thing. If we want to have any chance of competing and playing after the regular season we have to find ways to get stops.''
The Knicks then used an 18-8 run to take their biggest lead of the opening quarter, 25-16 on Sasha Vujacic's 3-pointer with 4:07 remaining. The Bulls scored the next six points and the Knicks led 31-27 entering the second quarter.
Anthony scored 10 points, and Vujacic had all of his nine in the period.
''We knew that they would come in and try and get it going from the beginning,'' Vujacic said. ''We just wanted to start the right way. We got ourselves going, and when we play like that we are very dangerous.''
The Knicks opened up another nine-point lead, 36-27, on Afflalo's short jumper with 9:51 left in the second quarter. Again the Bulls responded by scoring the next six points.
But, the Knicks then used a 9-3 run to again open a nine-point lead, 45-36, on Calderon's 3-pointer with 4:43 left in the first half.
The Bulls cut it to 47-45 on Gibson's layup with 2:34 remaining, but Porzingis followed with back-to-back 3s and the Knick took a 53-45 lead into halftime.
''He (Porzingis) is trailing sometimes and his man is back in the paint. He becomes a threat and he can make those shots,'' Anthony said.
The Knicks scored the first four points of the second half and increased their lead to 14 points on several occasions before Afflalo's buzzer-beating jumper gave New York an 80-65 lead after the third quarter.
The Knicks went up by a game-high 17 points, 100-83, on Anthony's 3-pointer with 3:29 left in the game and the Bulls never got closer than 10 the rest of the way.

Pau Gasol did not suit up due to inflammation in his right knee. He played 25 minutes and only scored four points in Wednesday night's loss to the Knicks.
THEY'RE BEING DEFENSIVE
The Knicks held the Bulls to 41.6 percent shooting (37-89) from the field and only 24 percent (6-25) from 3-point range.
''I thought we did a pretty good job defensively,'' Knicks coach Kurt Rambis said. ''They struggled shooting the ball from outside and I like to think our defense had something to do with that.''

NEW YORK (AP) LeBron James was so good for three quarters that the only one who could stop him was his own teammate.
The fourth quarter belonged to Brooklyn.
Brook Lopez scored 22 points and the Nets blew by James and the Cleveland Cavaliers down the stretch for a 104-95 victory Thursday night.
James was scoreless and missed both shots in the fourth quarter after he scored 30 points on 13-for-14 shooting through three. Lopez had the final five points in a late 14-0 run as the Nets surged past the Eastern Conference leaders.
''We had a lot more fight than we've shown in the last couple of games,'' interim coach Tony Brown said. ''More than anything, obviously, Brook led us down the stretch.''
Shane Larkin added 16 points and seven assists for the Nets in his return to the starting lineup. Bojan Bogdanovic had 12 points.
The Cavaliers finished 10 of 38 on 3-pointers, needing a make by Jordan McRae after the Nets had taken control to extend their franchise-record streak to 10 games with 10 or more makes. But they misfired way too often, with Kyrie Irving finishing 6 for 22 from the field and Kevin Love going 5 for 14.
It looked as if James would rescue his teammates when he scored 15 points in a dominant third quarter. He started 10 for 10 before finally missing when he attempted to follow up Irving's missed layup but appeared to be affected by center Timofey Mozgov jumping as well, and he gave the Russian a long look after the Nets got the rebound of his miss.
But James quickly added three more baskets before the end of the period as the Cavs surged into an 83-80 lead.
''We never gave in,'' Lopez said. ''We knew they were going to come out hard in the third quarter and make runs. They were going to try to hit us early and we just stuck with it. They even came back and took the lead, which is something we've been struggling with all season, but we pushed through that.''
James started the fourth quarter on the bench and the Nets took advantage. Rondae Hollis-Jefferson scored six quick points, and the Cavs' lead was 92-90 before the Nets hit them with the decisive spurt.
''I don't think we started the game with a lot of energy,'' James said. ''I think we expended a lot coming back in that third quarter to try to get back in the game, which we did, and then we had a rough start to the fourth quarter, kind of gave them momentum back.
Brooklyn led 59-49 at halftime, with the Cavs going 3 for 18 beyond the arc.
Irving finished 1 for 8 on 3s, J.R. Smith was 2 for 8, Love missed all five and Channing Frye was 1 for 6.
''We didn't make shots tonight but that's the not the biggest thing,'' Cavs coach Tyronn Lue said. ''The biggest thing for me is just competing for 48 minutes.''
TIP-INS
Cavaliers: Lue didn't want to discuss what he talked about with James following the Cavs' blowout loss in Miami on Saturday. Cleveland.com reported Thursday that Lue spoke to him after the game after feeling James spent too much time talking to Dwyane Wade at halftime instead of warming up. ''LeBron's the leader of this team, we had a great talk and that's it,'' Lue said.
Nets: Larkin and Sergey Karasev got the start in the backcourt and Larkin will get the job the rest of the season as the Nets focus on seeing who they want to keep on the roster going forward. Brown said the evaluation process could even mean veterans Lopez and Thaddeus Young could get certain games off so younger players could get more time.
NEW TEAM, OLD LOOK
The Nets unveiled the logo and uniforms for the Long Island Nets, their NBA Development League affiliate that will debut next season. The red, white and blue color scheme is a nod to the franchise's past, as the New York Nets wore those colors when they played in the ABA from 1972-76. The team will play its first season at Barclays Center before moving to the renovated Nassau Coliseum in 2017-18.
HE'S NO. 2
Lopez moved past Vince Carter into second place on the Nets' career scoring list with 8,835 points. Buck Williams is the career leader with 10,440.
