Shelly Long didn't like that they didn't end up together but do you?

Sam and Diane is one of the biggest will they/won't they couples in all of television. Yet in the end, they did not stay together. Do you think they should have?

I'm kind of on the fence about this. She had been gone for six years and he did fine without her, although as far as long lasting relationships go, besides his ex-wife, Diane was the longest and most recent. By the final show, he was trying to change his ways by going to the sex anonymous meetings to help with his addictions. I think the biggest problem is that Diane wanted to move Sam to California and away from Cheers and all his friends. Had she been willing to move back to Boston things would have been better. Yet, her career would have suffered. So I guess in the end, their careers (and lives) were more important than their relationship to each other.

I don't know. What do you think?

I think the only thing Sam and Diane had in common was that, for a period of time, they both worked at Cheers. Once Diane wasn't working there anymore there wasn't enough to sustain their relationship. And Sam could never leave Cheers. He needed the support system he had developed with co-workers and friends to help him maintain his sobriety.

I've always thought if there was a way for Diane to stay around longer, they could have easily done so by making her pregnant and become a mother. This way she would be in a 6th season being pregnant, then a 7th handling an infant, and even an 8th raising a toddler. I like the Rebecca years, but this is just an idea of how to keep Diane around longer had Shelley not left after five years.

They had their moments but no Sam and Diane shouldn't have ended up together. They were like oil and water, they just didn't mix. They had absolutely nothing in common. It wouldn't have worked out.

They should be because Diane & Sam are completely better off together as a couple in my opinion

It's a hard question.

I would say yes if Diane had returned earlier, whether that meant Cheers ended sooner or maybe even in some sort of guest capacity. I know they were like chalk and cheese but they worked so well together. Perhaps they'd even have a kid together? I think the end of I Do, Adieu is heartbreaking.

In reality though, it's probably good that they didn't stay together. Sam had years to get over Diane, and had come to the conclusion that the bar and his friends there were more important, and that's fair. He went through so much without her, and so by the time she did show up at series end, they were even more incompatible than before.
