Back in the 70's and early 80's I watched sitcoms regularly which I no longer do. ODAAT was a pretty decent sitcom for its time. I liked Bonnie Franklin, which I know a lot of people didn't, and while I didn't like Mackenzie Phillips as a person, her roller coaster life and matching character life made the show more interesting. But what kept me glued to the TV each week was looking at Valerie. I thought the stories became dopey, hated the onscreen marriages, hated the new characters brought in especially their annoying version of Chachi, but I couldn't turn it off, and Valerie was the reason why.
I'm basically the same age as Valerie, but her cuteness was no match for the crappiness of the show.
Don't sugar coat it:)
I'm already on record somewhere on this board as stating that back in the day, not having come from a broken home, I would have not otherwise been interested in a series about a divorced woman trying to make it on her own.

Though as little as it ever made me "LOL!" when I watched the series in re-runs last year, it should hardly be called a "sitcom". It was much more "dram" than ever "com".
