As you can see, I have tried very hard to stimulate some new conversation about this fine series. However, nobody seems too interested in replying to any of the topics that I can think of to write about. So once again, I find myself writing about site traffic! I see that my thread titled "Debra and the Boy" now has forty-seven views and zero replies. I would like to commemorate this reality by writing about the fact that, in 1947, the classic film, "Miracle on 34th Street" made its debut. Is anyone here especially fond of this movie? In the past, I have written quite a bit about how TV and other media is effected by social Darwinism. I mentioned how shows like "All in the Family" broke down barriers in terms of being able to mention things like sex, religion and war. Shows like "Gimme a Break!" took the ideas that shows like "All in the Family" introduced and ran with them. This is where we come to the episodes that dealt with things like birth control, teen pregnancy and what it is like when your daughter starts smoking. I then made a comparison to later shows like "Friends" that took the types of things that were dealt with in "Gimme a Break!" and ran even further with them. This is where we come to such realities as lesbianism, use of a toilet and starting the engine of a car with the wire from a bra. Well, I would say that "Miracle on 34th Street" is another good example of something that fits into social Darwinism. The main character of this story is a little girl whose parents are divorced and whose mother works at Macy's. Back then, it was very rare for any type of media to deal with divorce in general and divorced parenting in particular. By the time of "Gimme a Break!" we were already moving into the days where it was becoming the rule rather than the exception for a movie or a series to have at least one character with divorce in his or her background. On "Gimme a Break!" itself, we see the divorces of Nell and Addie and we even get to see Katie's friend Valerie going through a divorce. Just one more example of social Darwinism in action.
