If a tree falls in the forest and there is noone there to hear it, does it make a sound?

If no one is there, then how do we know the tree fell in the first place?

You know, I've never gotten the big philosophical meaning to this question. The answer is so obvious--of course it makes a sound. If I'm not home to hear it and my alarm clock goes off, does it mean it didn't make any noise--of course not.
I wonder who started this silly debate?
I'm not implying that the person who posted this thread started a silly debate, but the person who originated it years ago certainly did.

Ok...we discussed this in science...so here's a lil science lesson for ya:

When something falls it produces sound waves. In order for it to be turned into a sound it needs to have something with the ability to turn the sound waves into a sound(people, animals). So...if nothin is there to turn it into a sound then it would just be sound waves. Yea...there ya go...lil science lesson for ya.

But if it's in a forest, wouldn't there be other trees for it to bounce off?

umm a tree cant just FALL can it? so like no you wont hear it fall because someone needs to be there to make it fall? i dont know im just guessing.

if the tree dies and gets old it can just fall over from being rotten. or it could just grow sideways then break and fall over. its possible.

Actually the tree DOES make a sound. I looked it up in our science book in school since we're studying sound. It's a longitudinal wave that moves through the air and the ground. And this causes a sound to occur.
