Howdy folks,
I've been a fan of Hazel since I first saw it as a kid. The best news I had in a while was when former "superstation" WOR actually showed all the b/w episodes of Hazel. Up until then I had to make do with the highly edited versions color only episodes of Hazel I taped off of CBN. WOR's versions were less edited and were a pleasure to watch and tape. Hazel's been off the air now since WOR went off, but thank Gosh for video tapes I can still watch Hazel once a week every Saturday. I watch Hazel as I eat breakfast on Saturday mornings. Or if I'm off from work, it's Hazel time again at breakfast. Sundays I watch Dennis The Menace, my other favorite.

I can't explain why Hazel, of all shows, is my favorite. I think it was because this was the only comedy show I remember watching as a kid where you sometimes felt bad for Hazel. When the snobs in the show would put Hazel down or hurt her feelings, I felt sorry for her. I think that's what made me like her and got me hooked on the show. Watching the show now I see that that didn't happen very often but before I actually saw it again in recent years I thought that Hazel's feelings were hurt in every episode.

Best example of a touching and heart rendering show is when Hazel wants to join in on a teeny bopper slumber party that the teenage girl next door (this is from the b/w shows where the neighbor's were a widower and his 3 kids) wants to have. Hazel is friendly with the neighbor's kids and gets involved in helping out do the arrangements for the party and just assumes she's invited. Then the teen girl comes over and asks Mrs. B to tell Hazel not to come to the party because she's too old. That show'll put a lump in your throat.

Hope more folks join in on the message board here. Lot of good Hazel things to talk about. Let's hear other's favorite shows or reasons why you like Hazel. By the way, I also like Don Defore's character, thought he was a good foil for Hazel and perfect for the role. Let's hear from the rest of you Hazelites.

My fave episode is the Christmas episode where Hazel gets a job at the Department store.

Hi everyone I just felt like posting and saying that Hazel is my favorite classic show and I wish that they would show it again because It is such a great show. I recently purchased a set off this board and there are honestly a lot of great episodes. I also think the show had some great writers as well. My favorite episode Is the one called "So Long brown Eyes" were Hazel's old boyfriend Gus Jenkins writes to her and then comes to see her after 25 years and harold worries about Hazel marrying him and not loving him anymore and Gus still wants to travel and not settle down and It is so sweet because when Hazel comes home harold is asleep in her room and waiting for her to come home. I also like the one with Frank Gifford when he comes to town to invest in a bowling alley and Hazel does her trick shot bowling. I first discovered Hazel in 2002 when they started running it on tv land. I knew of it being a big classc tv fan and because Shirley Booth is one of my favorite actressess and I can't imagine another person to play Hazel. I also think she was a beautiful lady as well. I had seen all her movies and I had seen Don Defore as Thorny on Ozzie and Harriet and liked him as well. This show has also deals with some modern themes as well including the episode "Rosies contract" which dealt with rosie worrying about automation taking over her job. Like today its hard to actually get a live person on the phone. I think Don Defore was also perfect for the role of George Baxter and I can't imagine the man in the original unaired pilot playing him.

A friend wanted me to clean somthing up and I told her "Hey, I'm not Hazel." She had no idea who I was talking about. :( We're both in our 20s, but she had never seen the reruns like I had growing up.

I watch Hazel as I eat breakfast on Saturday mornings. Or if I'm off from work, it's Hazel time again at breakfast.

I like to schedule my favorite TV shows around meal times too. It feels cozier.

I just got the season 1 dvd and hope more are to come. Hubby and I both work stressing jobs(doesn't everyone) and we don't want to come home and watch the depressing network shows or the too raunchy cable shows so we love 60's sitcoms, either on dvd or tvland. But I think tvland is starting to abandon it's initial mission--too many reality shows and 80's sitcoms. I love the Hazel episode where she goes to the snooty women's spa. I think it is called "Hazel's Secret Wish." Thanks

Yes, I agree "Hazel's Secret Wish" is one of the finer episodes. I like it because it, like most of the better Hazel's combines humor with a little drama and pathos for Hazel. For a very dramatic Hazel show watch the episode "Hazel's Pajama Party" it's the saddest Hazel I think they ever wrote. Shirley Booth was a great actress. One of the more fun Hazel shows is "Sunshine Girls Quartette" where Mr. Griffin celebrates his Birthday with the Baxter's with a so-called surprise party. I like the scene where he blows out the candles and when he announces to the party goers, "Happy Birthday to ME!" Funny show. Also like the one when George's mother wants to go into the gardening business. Lot of great episodes, I watch an episode every time I have a day off, Saturdays, Sundays & Holidays. Makes your day at home even more enjoyable. YAY for Hazel! :birthday:

I have also loved Hazel since I first saw it in re-runs in the early 1970s. I truly hope that Sony will release season 2 through 4 on DVD soon! I've emailed them at: spn_questions@sonyupictures.com to ask them to do so.

The show hardly ever gets re-run on TV. I have the first season DVD and love it. Last time I saw seasons 2 through 4 was in the late 1980s on the CBN cable network when they reran it.

Please let's start a campaign to get seasons 2 - 4 released on DVD!!!!

Michael:)

I know how you feel. I've said things too that reference old TV shows or stars and people just stare at you like you're from Mars. At least we're in the know.

Hazel had so many nice episodes. It would be easier to think of the only one I didn't like rather than all I did like. I liked all of them except for the one where she is with the New Baxters and she is trying to lose weight and joins a exercise gym run by Lee Meriweather. Hazel realizes later it's too expensive and wants to get her money back but they won't give it to her. In the good writing days of Hazel she would have thought of some method to get her money back, but in this show she just starts crying like an idiot when she's all tired out from exercising and can't get her money. Ridiculous, bad writing and Hazel acted like a moron in that one episode. But that's the only example of a Hazel show that I cringe when I watch it. All the rest are either very good or pretty good. I love the show no matter what, it's my favorite.
