View Full Version : The Trail Went Cold: An Unsolved Mysteries Podcast - Episode: The Murder of David Cox
RobinW 03-16-2016, 05:36 PM Hello folks, many of you have probably already seen the thread for my new true crime podcast, “The Trail Went Cold”, in which I analyze both UM and non-UM cold cases. My first episode chronicled the Aeileen Conway case from UM and my second episode covered the infamous “Fort Worth Three” disappearance from December 1974:

For my third episode, I’ve decided to cover a rather underrated Unsolved Mysteries case which has never gotten a lot of discussion around here: the murder of David Cox. In case you’re not familiar with the story, Cox was a former Marine who was involved in a controversial “code red” hazing incident while stationed at Guantanamo. Years later, the hit movie, “A Few Good Men”, was released, which was loosely based upon the real “code red” incident. When Cox saw the movie, he decided to organize a class action lawsuit against the production company and gave a series of outspoken radio interviews about the incident. In January 1994, Cox disappeared from his home and was found to shot to death three months later.
It’s pretty much the perfect murder, as there was almost zero evidence to work with, and as far as I know, there haven’t been many major developments or suspects within the past 20 years. But as I discuss in the podcast, I have my own personal theory about might have happened. Enjoy…

jjmcgr 03-17-2016, 10:54 AM each podcast gets better. Even though I lived near Boston during the Cox murder, I do not remember the case getting any publicity back home at the time. The movie had a Boston connection in that the Tom Cruise character was supposed to be from Boston.
One pet peeve as I now live in Kansas. Cox was not risking being sent to the Leavenworth Penitentiary. There are actually two prisons in Leavenworth (and a third in nearby Lansing where the In Cold Blood killers were housed and executed) a couple of miles apart. The prison Cox would have been sent to was actually the DOD disciplinary barracks on Fort Leavenworth, the Army post located north of the town. The Federal penitentiary is located off the post in the city of Leavenworth and once hosted the worst of the worse federal convicts. Most of those are nowadays at newer superprisons in Indiana and Colorado and people like Michael Vick go to Leavenworth now. The two prisons are about five miles apart.

I swear I'm not fan-girling, but your podcasts ARE really good! Creepy music, interesting theories... I'm impressed! :)

Ah, thanks for the clarification. The Baltimore Sun article I read only said Leavenworth, but I wondered why they were threatening to send Cox to a civilian prison.

Thanks, much appreciated :) . I'm very lucky to have a talented editor and talented musician working alongside me to help assemble these podcasts. I also just invested in a new microphone, so you'll probably notice a marked improvement in sound quality on this latest episode.
I'm going to be covering a pretty notable UM case in two weeks, so stay tuned...
jjmcgr 03-17-2016, 03:25 PM I look forward to the following episodes. I really think the case where the Boston lady last seen in Philadelphia ends up dead in NC is a worthy if eerie case. The hubbie had an alibi and the victim had no connection to NC. And now UFO nuts claim a connection to where her body was found.

Ah yes, Judy Smith! That one is SO bizarre that it's definitely in my queue for a future episode. Never heard the UFO theory before, so I'll definitely have to look into that.
LooksLikeCRicci 03-17-2016, 04:42 PM There's a camp that Judy Smith was abducted by a UFO? Wow.

Haven't heard of this theory either. Was a certain infamous poster the propagator of this theory?
WishfulDreamer 03-17-2016, 10:10 PM Excellent job, Robin. Can't wait for the next one. :D

I don't think the UFO crowd even knows about Judy. But if you google the place where she was found , several you tube videos result which shows UFO enthusiasts at the rest area scanning for paranormal vibes.
jjmcgr 03-18-2016, 04:00 PM for a non-UM case I think you should consider the 2006 murder of Paul Zeller in Arlington, VA. Zeller was a GWOT vet who worked late hours at a car dealership in Maryland who took the DC subway home to the Pentagon City station then walked a mile to his sister's house where he lived. The sister was an Army officer who worked in the Pentagon. Zeller was seen on a video camera at an all night supermarket next to the subway exit at about 1 am. Only minutes later he was walking down a street alongside a bunch of closed stores and was shot and killed on the sidewalk next to a World Market. Ironically on the other side of the street were a row of high rise apartment buildings with balconies facing the crime scene. Theoretically hundreds of people could have witnessed the crime but the time late on a weeknight, no one came forward. And it is still unsolved. I used to live nearby in DC and shopped at the Pentagon City mall. A few years ago I walked the crime scene and it seems a very unlikely place for a murder. A few years before in another section of Arlington, an editor for Stars and Stripes newspaper was murdered walking the two blocks from the Courthouse station. Also still unsolved. That guy, ironically, lived in an apartment where a woman had once been murdered (solved). His wallet was found along the interstate later on.
Picture of site of Zeller murder attached.
