Or else, they get cancelled?
Is this true?

Wow, hadn't heard about that and I haven't watched the show in years but it doesn't really surprise me given the fate of the other soaps.

It wouldn't surprise me, either. The current daytime drama model no longer works in today's society. The reason American soaps are on the extinction list as soaps from around the world flourish in popularity is because their soaps are on during prime time hours, not daytime hours!

Also, many soaps from other countries feature only half-hour episodes, with many airing only two or three times weekly, instead of every day throughout the week as has been the traditional model for American soaps. Foreign soaps (for the majority) also shoot on location, not in some stodgy studio, which looks old-fashioned and out-of-place in today's world.

I believe the only way to save the American "daytime drama" from ultimate extinction, (which is only a few years away, in my opinion) is for a complete revamping of the model currently in place. It would be "revolutionary", but I don't think there is any other way to save the genre from disappearing completely from the American landscape... :(

It's so sad that soaps have faded away. Like it or not, soaps are a huge part of TV's past.

You know what? I think it's time one if the big 4 networks made another prime time soap opera. Like in the same vein as Dallas or Knots Landing

In some ways, the big budget "prime time" soap is still around. Shows such as Grey's Anatomy and Scandal feature big budgets and use techniques familiar to fans of Dynasty and Dallas, complete with season-ending cliff-hangers meant to keep fans watching. I think prime time programs in this vein will always be around, but it would be fun to see shows like Dynasty and Knot's Landing on television again.

I was thinking, if ABC does cancel General Hospital, it will be the first time the network has ever not had a daytime soap on its roster, probably since the very beginning! It would also mean that there would only be three American soaps still in production: Days of Our Lives, The Bold & The Beautiful and The Young & The Restless... :(

I'm not a GH fan (I watch DAYS), but that is a sad thought. I was raised on watching soaps with both my Grandmas and Mom.
