Wayne Rogers did leave M*A*S*H over the lack of attention shown his character, with Alan Alda basically becoming the star of the show, the first major divergence from the storyline as laid out by the novel and movie, in which Trapper John had an equal footing with Hawkeye.

There have been a couple of threads recently about irreplaceable sitcom stars, and I've mentioned that in the movie Trapper was much more of an equal partner with Hawkeye, and that I think if Alda had left instead of Rogers, then the show could have run for quite a while as an ensemble military sitcom instead of the dramedy turn it took.

Nah the show would have been done if AA had left. I like Trapper but on the show he always felt like a side kick more than a equal partner like BJ was. To me BJ and Hawkeye just fit better as BFF's
