It's a decent show. Different from other shows of the era. I'm surprised it only lasted 1 season. So does anyone else like it or am I the only one?

I enjoy it. This show has such a bad rap-but I don't see it as any more inane than a talking horse, identical cousins, a marriage between a mortal and a witch.
I've been burning it when it airs on Antenna.

They're showing it on Sunday now-at least here in NYC.

It's been moved to Sunday mornings 8AM Eastern time. The show is OK, not a classic but good for some occasional laughs. I bought the DVD set, most episodes seem to have the laugh track removed, but I noticed at least one episode that has the laugh track. It's one of those carefree fantasy sitcoms of the 60's. Not the best show, but it gives you a comfy cozy feeling just watching it. Nice to watch for the nostalgia value.

As a kid I remember watching this when it was originally on (in b/w on our b/w TV, didn't know it was color till I bought the DVD set) and as a kid I thought it was very funny. But I was both thrilled and disappointed when I saw it again for the first time from the DVDs. Thrilled when I saw it was in beautiful bright color but disappointed in that I didn't find the show funny at all. Amusing, maybe, but certainly not a knee slapper.

The difference though between this series and other fantasy shows like Mr. Ed or Bewitched is those series were actually funny and they still are to this day. I wish the show was funnier but it's seems aimed at children with juvenile style jokes and broad actions meant for a child's reactions. There is no humor that an adult could laugh with the way one can in Mr. Ed, there the jokes are also meant for adults to understand, even though kids might not get the humor. Similar to the way Bugs Bunny was meant to be seen, kids could like it but it was also written for an adult audience.

I still like My Mother The Car though, and will surely watch it again some day, but I won't be expecting to hold my sides in laughter. It's still nice to watch and to see all the '60's items in the scenery and cars etc. of the times in which it was filmed (as I remember them as a kid), so to me it's more a nostalgic thing, I suppose but not a laugh riot.

Just my 2 cents.

Yeah!!! I agree!!!! I never saw it before Antenna picked it up! I was very excited to see it!!! But, when I saw it I thought it was a cool, cute premise and "kind of" funny but not something I would make time to watch all the time!!!! It was just OK!!! I wouldn't add it to my favorite old show list!

It is a nice show, and fun to watch for nostalgic value as well. But yes, Bewitched is FAR more entertaining. Mr. Ed never rang my bell....but Hazel did!
She was such a character--the buttinsky maid with a heart of gold who could run rings around Julia Child. What car could keep up with Hazel! It was really nice when Antenna aired Hazel and I burned mNy eps of it.

See now IMO Mr. Ed is the best!!!! ;) The premise of a smart aleck talking horse and the only one he talks to and knows he talks is a goofy man is hilarious!!! I LOVE Mr. Ed!!! I love Hazel too. And Bewitched , I grew up with it but got tired somewhere along the way, it was played a lot. But still I have it in my heart and truly love Bewitched too !!! My mother the car would never rate as high as these three!!!;)

I certainly don't hate Mr. Ed-the horse was great but the human characters were kind of dull in comparison, IMHO anyways. What made Bewitched and Hazel great were the great cast of truly WACKY/ECCENTRIC characters-all interesting in their own right and with strong, but appealing personalities. But none overshadowed the main character.

My 2 all time favorite TV shows are Hazel & Adv. of Superman ('50's series). But I grew up watching all kinds of TV shows and to tell the truth I love 99% of all of them. My motto is, as far as TV shows go, if it's old it's great. To me, TV's best years were from the '50's thru the early '70's. After '75 things got dicey as to what was good and bad. There were still a few good shows after '75 but I could probably count on 1, maybe 2 hands the shows after '75 that I'd consider anywhere near as good as the one's from the '60's.

But just about any show you could name from the '60's I like. Bev. Hillbillies, Green Acres, Pet. Junction, Bewitched, Mr Ed, My Favorite Martian, Beaver, I could go on, I love them all.

A few shows I've never been a fan of that other people love are Hogan's Heroes & Get Smart, as a kid and now I just don't find them funny or entertaining, just boring.

Funny enough, one show I just recently became a fan of is Addams Family, I didn't like it as a kid, but last year I watched it all and found it to be very funny. Watching it from an adult perspective, it even has really good family values. The parents really care for each other and also love their kids and all their relatives. If it weren't for the fact they're all monsters you'd think it was Father Knows Best.

A couple shows I really liked as a kid but now no longer care if I ever see them again are Brady Bunch and Gilligan's Island. I just don't find them funny or very entertaining. When I was a kid I couldn't get enough of them.

TV's a fun thing, today though you really have to have it on DVD to be able to see what you want when you want it and also to be sure you'll have it forever and not rely on a TV channel to show it or not. Prime example, My 3 Sons (another real favorite of mine) has just been taken off ME TV again! On for a couple months then gone again. Even worse it's replaced with Brady Bunch!! So if I had to rely on a TV channel to watch my favorite shows I'd be forever frustrated and enraged. Thank goodness for VHS tapes and now for DVDs.:)

Bought the whole series on DVD. I had only seen a handful of episodes years ago when TVLand was still a classic TV show channel. I liked what I saw then, so as soon as I saw it released on DVD I snatched it up. Enjoyed the whole series. Great characters, very funny dialogue.

It is funny this show gets bashed for its premise considering the premises of the other sitcoms that came out the same decade. Though I am noticing some who bash it have never even watched it but are going by its reputation.

I totally agree, and actually rather like show better then some other 60s shows just as far fetched like Gilligan's Island and Mr. Ed. Ann Sothern was great as the car's voice even though we never saw the actual actress. Actually it would have been cool to have Ms. Sothern guest on the show, as a neighbor or relative like the way Serena did with Sam on Bewitched.

Is My Mother The Caran epic ground-breaking sitcom. IMO, no, but it is a lot of fun to watch-and at least, if someone is going to bash the show, watch a few eps first!

To each there own sometimes. I've seen it here and there and watched a couple episodes and I just think it's one of the stupidest shows ever. Family Matters, you're surprised it lasted one season while on the other hand I can't understand how it got on the air in the first place. I really don't understand what they were thinking or how anyone could like it. But that's the way it goes.

There's only so much you can do with a show when the main character is an inanimate object.A mother reincarinated as a car ? Really ? Just a bad idea from the very beginning.

True and I was never a big Mr Ed fan either but it did have it's funny moments. My Mother The Car was just too over the top silly to me and there wasn't alot of gut busting humor.I have every episode so I have watched them.I just cannot get into this show.

I thought the show was okay and Jerry Van Dyke had some funny moments. Plus I've seen worse comedies over the years. If you like a show watch it, if not then don't watch it, that's my motto. ;)

I like the show, I remember really liking it as a kid. But as an adult watching it recently I just don't find it funny. Honestly, I don't think I laughed once (as opposed to Mr. Ed which just about every episode is funny). It really seems to be written for children, the humor is very children's show type. Reactions and takes by people are all over the top, like a children's show might be, the jokes extremely juvenile. Just seems to be a kiddie show. As opposed to a Mr. Ed or Addams Family or My Favorite Martian (all fantasy shows) but where the writing was also meant for adults. I still like the show though and I appreciate the times it was in as it reminds me of the '60's whenever I watch. I'll no doubt watch it all again, but I won't be expecting to hold my gut while watching.

I have to be honest, I just don't see how this show is any sillier than a talking horse, a Martian, identical cousins, stranded castaways who always look well put together etc. Is MMTC some kind of epic masterpiece? No, of course not, but it is pleasant enough, and Ann Sothern is a bit of a hoot (or perhaps I should say toot) as the car's voice.

The difference is those other shows are funny and not meant just for kids like a kiddie show. Mr. Ed, My Favorite Martian etc., I call these type shows fantasy shows, they were cleverly written and while funny to kids were also written on another level for adults to appreciate the more sophisticated humor. Just as Bugs Bunny cartoons were loved by kids, they were also written for adults to get jokes that kids wouldn't. OK, nobody's telling you you have to agree that the other shows were funny, but I hope you can see the difference in the style of humor, one meant for adults and kids the other meant just for kids. Like I said, I don't dislike My Mother the Car, it's just not in the same humor class of those other shows.

Ever since discovering it on Antenna, I do like this show. It's corny, sure, but I don't think many of the fantasy 60s sitcoms were masterpieces by any means either. MMTC is a fun classic that is often overlooked, I would say. I have an affinity for these goofy sitcoms

My Mother The Car was not meant just for kids either. Some of the humor was aimed at adults. It's on the same level as the other 60's fantasy sitcoms.

This is a bit off topic but what the hey. Recently been getting into Hazel and just borrowed S#'s 2-4 from the library. I just love the way she runs rings around everybody esp. biz tycoon Mr. Griffin & Mr. B. That Hazel - she's a real doozy lol. Going to go over & post on Hazel board later.
