Natalie Cole, the American singer who overcame battles with substance abuse and the long shadow of her famous father to earn worldwide success of her own, has died. She was 65.

Publicist Maureen O'Connor told The Associated Press Cole died Thursday night. O'Connor had no details about how or where Cole died.

The daughter of Nat "King" Cole built a chart-topping career with hits such as "This Will Be", "Inseparable" and "Our Love." She fought health problems for years and received a kidney transplant in 2009 after developing hepatitis.

Cole recently had to cancel planned tour stops, including one in Louisville, due to illness, according to WDRB.

Cole won nine Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year in 1992 for "Unforgettable ... With Love," a virtual duet made with the recordings of her late father. The album sold 14 million copies.

Nat King Cole is my favorite old time singer. Natalie Cole exploited him as much as possible for her own career and publicly bad mouthed her own mother, Nat's widow, who I considered an extremely classy lady. Maybe it's not polite to post this just after she died but I doubt she's been mentioned here before.

OH Nuts!

Well I'm sad to hear of her passing. Not sure about her exploiting her father a lot. Meaning: I'm not sure - it might be true or might not. But, at least to me, Natalie was very talented in her own right. She had a lovely voice. However, I liked Nat's more.

I'm really shocked to hear about her dying. I didn't realize she was that sick. Such a loss for everybody, she had a marvelous singing voice. Her duet of Unforgettable with her dad is just a classic and one of my favorites. May Natalie Cole rest in peace.

RIP Natalie. I love her song Jump Start which she did a video for and I like her dad Nat King Cole. My dad loves her and her dad too. My dad has Nat's greatest hits album and Christmas album. He also has a couple of albums by Natalie.

I first heard of Natalie Cole when my mother was doing some housekeeping and I noticed an amazing voice coming from my mother's cassette player and so when my mother was done cleaning house I asked her "Who was that girl singing" and so she handed me the cassette label and case and I saw it was Natalie Cole and the cassette was Unforgettable.. With Love. And I was so enchanted with her voice that I got the exact same Natalie Cole album in a CD copy for myself and from then on I collected some of Natalie Cole's music in the jazz style because that was the style I most perferred Natalie Cole in. Later on I discovered Natalie Cole's 70's hits through the song Sorry when I first heard the song sampled on Keyshia Cole's song Losing You and became a fan of the song Sorry. I really want to get her recent Spanish language cd because I have heard it's a wonderful cd and really awesome. I also love her album Ask A Woman Who Knows as well
