I Never Promised You A Rose Garden '77  (During the 1950s, pretty and privileged Deborah is, at the age of 16, a borderline schizophrenic who spends most of her waking hours in a bizarre fantasy realm. After a failed suicide attempt, she lands in a mental institution, where the hostile environment threatens to destabilize her condition even further.

Kathleen Quinlan, Bibi Anderson, Lorraine Gary, Susan Tyrell, Sylvia Sidney, Reni Santoni, Norman Alden, Richard Herd, Nancy Parsons.

Jeff Conaway, and Danny Elfman and The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo make appearances in Deborah's fantasy world.

Dennis Quaid, Clint Howard, and Mel Gibson pop up at the end as baseball players.

Kathleen Quinlan is brilliant as Deborah. The film is loosely based on the book of the same name by Joanne Greenberg which was inspired by her real life experience as a teen.)

I was expecting these ladies to give us more of their style, but it seems now they're just making movies for the WWE, what with See No Evil 2, a mediocre sequel to a mediocre slasher, and now Vendetta, which I never would have guessed was directed by them had I not already known it.)

Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers '88  (Jack Chandler is a private eye tracking down Samantha the runaway. In his travels, he comes across a gang of chainsaw weilding prostitutes that like to carve people up for their cult.

Jay Richardson, Linnea Quigley, Michelle Bauer, Gunnar Hansen.
Dukey Flyswatter plays a bartender. Besides being a member of the horror-punk band Haunted Garage, he penned the 1987 horror comedy Blood Diner.

There's a scene where Michelle Bauer is chainsawing one of her "clients", they used a severed arm prop that you could order out of the back of Fangoria Magazine, I owned the same arm. )

The Signal (2007) on DVD :thumbsdow

All forms of communication transmit a signal causing everybody to go crazy and exhibit murderous behavior.

I didn't get into this one. The characters weren't likable and it tried to be a black comedy at times, but it didn't work.

* One of the directors/writers, David Bruckner, went on to do the original V/H/S.

The film's stars Anessa Ramsey and A.J. Bowen teamed-up again for Rites of Spring.

Pimpin' Pee Wee '09  (Porky's: The College Years. Three college buddies search for sex in the summer holidays and end up starting a successful whorehouse.

Despite the fact that it's not set in the 60's, but modern day, and they only brought back three characters- Pee Wee, Meat, and Tommy. Well, four if you count Pee Wee's mom, I still found myself entertained. They made lots of references to the original films, Porky's brother is now running Porky's. I also liked the chapter captions- one said The Next Day, the other said Porky's Revenge.
Colleen Camp plays Pee Wee's mom, and Barry Livingston plays Pee Wee's uncle.

One of the raunchiest teen sex comedies I've seen.)

A funny and touching portrait of a unique couple who has followed their passion in life.

It turned out to be a very sad documentary, as it's the final months leading up to Joe Sarno's death, and very touching watching the couple who have been together for over 40 years.

They mainly focused on his softcore films from the 60s and 70s which is what he is most known for, the films of this era I have seen are all beautifully shot, and acted, they were art films with nudity. They did ignore his later career when he made generic X-rated films during the VHS days of the 80s.)

Daylight '13 :thumbsdow (Social workers investigate a bizarre series of child-abuse in a small Indiana town. As the mystery unfolds, they discover the cases may actually be linked by demonic possession.

I'm a huge found footage fan. Part of what makes an FF film work for me is the sense of it being real, and part of what makes that work is the actors not doing regular film acting, but coming off as if you're watching real people. Well, not only was everyone just acting, but some of them very badly so, and some of the dialogue was awful. The teens were especially bad and didn't feel authentic.)

The Baby '73  (A social worker investigates the strange Wadsworth family. The Wadsworths might not seem too unusual to hear about them at first - consisting of the mother, two grown daughters and the diaper-clad, bottle-sucking baby. The problem is, the baby is twenty-one years old.

Ruth Roman, Anjanette Comer, Marianna Hill, Michael Pataki, David Mooney.

Ruth Roman is fantastic as the mother, and David Mooney is extremely convincing in his portrayal of Baby, you almost forget he's a grown man.

One of my favorite weird 70s movies. The poster is very misleading, it's made to look like Baby is a killer, and he's probably one of the only innocent characters in the film.)

There have been obscure movies on Home Video since its birth in the late 70's/early 80's.

These were usually released by indie labels such as Media Home Entertainment, Wizard Video, Thorn-EMI Video, Prism Video, Lightning Video, Embassy Home Entertainment, International Video Entertainment, and even Magnetic Video.

Wow Torgo! You sure do come up with some offbeat obscure movies! Where do you find them?

The Baby was one I got drawn in by its cover art back in the VHS store days (late 80s or early 90s is when I first found it).
Some of these movies I learn of through word of mouth from friends online and off. Back before the internet I read any movie related book and magazines I could get my hands on, watched VHS compilation tapes, then after the internet, going to all the sites like IMDB and just scouring the movies, seeking out titles I've never heard of before. Plus I frequent a site that focuses on the strange and obscure.
I've got an ongoing list that I've literally had going since I was in my teens, cross off the ones I've seen and add new ones, there's still a few I haven't been able to track down.

Sterling Knight, Spencer Locke

One day an escaped convict and her boyfriend take the girl prisoner and try to force her to guide them through the swamp in their escape from the law. However, the girl has other ideas.

It ain't no Gator Bait, but still a fun little film. I enjoy these films with swamp settings. There seems to be a subgenre of these swamp films that feature a young woman/teen raised in the swamps: Swamp Water '41, Bayou aka Poor White Trash '57, Lure Of The Wilderness '52, and Swamp Girl and Gator Bait)

Cabin Fever '16 :thumbsdow (A truly pointless remake. Almost shot for shot, and same dialogue, with little changes here and there. The original had great characters who all had their own distinct personalities, even the minor characters. In the remake, even though the dialogue was the same, all the characters are bland. And instead of coming up with their own creative gore scenes, they tried, and failed to recreate the ones from the original, including the leg shaving scene. Even Dennis the pancake kid was boring. They made Deputy Winston a female, but she had all of the same lines, she just couldn't pull off that character.
Probably about the only interesting thing about it was it was filmed here in Oregon.
I wish instead of this lousy remake they would have given us the once planned 3rd sequel- Cabin Fever: Outbreak.)

I watched Puppet Master 4 (1993) on Blu-ray w/ the new audio commentary by director Jeff Burr.

This was more of a technical commentary where he basically talked about how he was able to shoot certain scenes on a limited budget.

He did answer the #1 question that he gets from fans, "Why did Torch appear on the cover when he didn't appear in the movie?" He said that they had originally planned on bringing back all of the puppets and the concept art for the cover was completed before production began.

Torch was the most expensive puppet to work with due to his weapon of choice being a flamethrower. They had to have clearance from the fire marshal and permits to work with fire, medical crew on stand-by for cast/crew... and it was just too much money at the time. They then decided to just go with the poster art that they already had.

Torch did come back for Part 5 and Burr regards 4-5 as one movie since they were shot back-to-back w/ the same lead actors and FX crew.

He said he will explain more on the Part 5 commentary which comes out shortly.

Yeah, I'd seen some of her Italian output years ago- Black Belly Of The Tarantula, Short Night Of The Glass Dolls, Street Law, The Island of the Fishmen. Though my introduction to her was The Spy Who Loved Me, and Caveman when I was a kid.

Manhunter (1986) on DVD

A decorated FBI profiler is brought out of retirement to help track down a serial killer, nicknamed "The Tooth Fairy", who brutally murders entire families as they sleep.

He seeks out the advice from the brilliant cannibal murderer whom he had captured, Dr. Hannibal Lecter, to aide the investigation.

- Was originally going to be called "Red Dragon", the same name of the Thomas Harris novel of it which it was adapted from.

They came up with the name "Manhunter" so that the audience wouldn't think it was another martial arts flick.

- Tom Noonan, who played Francis Dollarhyde aka "The Tooth Fairy", was originally going to have the full body art tattoos on his back of William Blake's "Great Red Dragon" paintings, as the novel had depicted the character.

Director Michael Mann found them to be over-the-top and decided not to use them for the movie. When Ralph Fiennes took over the role in "Red Dragon" (2002) the tattoos were depicted.

- Frankie Faison, who is known as playing Barney the Orderly, appeared in "Manhunter" as a police officer. He is the only person to appear in all of the Hannibal movies; with the exception of "Hannibal Rising".

- The film featured early roles of:

Dan Butler
Garcelle Beauvais
Chris Elliott
John Posey

Discouraged and confused by the inability of those around him to see anything but a screenful of static, he charismatically hijacks a bus of friendly elderly people in order to get media attention for his invention.

Keith Gordon, Amanda Plummer, Bob Gunton

It is remembered as one of the most infamous incidents in American industrial history, as the deaths were largely preventable–most of the victims died as a result of neglected safety features and locked doors within the factory building. The tragedy brought widespread attention to the dangerous sweatshop conditions of factories, and led to the development of a series of laws and regulations that better protected the safety of workers.

Glass House: The Good Mother (2006) on DVD

Two seemingly loving parents adopt a pair of siblings whose parents died in a car accident. Everything seems to be going great until the older sibling notices odd behavior going on.

The film is an unrelated, in-name only sequel to 2001's The Glass House.
