Twenty-five years ago, director Penny Marshall spoke with Movieline about her upcoming drama, Awakenings, how she became one of two prominent female directors in Hollywood at the time and what it was like working on her brother’s sitcom while being married to Rob Reiner.

One of the less appealing parts of Miss Marshall's recent autobio was that she downplayed her own talent as a director as though the profession just fell in her lap at a time when women directors were few and far between, and, apart from mentioning how she befriended MORE celebs via that venture, didn't seem to grasp her own impact on the movies themselves much less the profession. While the movie wasn't perfect, IMO, it was quite well done on Miss Marshall's part and IMO a masterpiece for its time .

Penny Marshall was one of the first women I had a romantic crush on. She made shorts fashionable long before Catherine Bach. Unfortunately, when I became a teenager in 1978, she was already in her mid-thirties and married to The Meathead. I would have been young enough to be her second child instead of a husband...
