Some of you may be familiar with the case of Ethan Couch, whose was 16 in 2013 and whose wealthy parents let him live unsupervised in a large, luxurious house and never gave him any rules or discipline in his entire life. He had a reputation for driving drunk and did just that one night, killing 4 people and wounding many others. His mother knew about his underage drinking and driving and never did anything about it. The case was profiled last year on 20/20. I assume "affluenza" is a combination of the words 'affluent' and 'influenza'.

Ethan was never convicted of killing 4 innocent people, just sentenced to probation. Well, as it turns out, he can't even do that properly, as he has been missing for over a week, most likely with the assistance of his mother.

I agree. I would also like to throw the judge who gave him probation in jail too.

Hopefully this case puts to rest some of the Texas justice stereotypes. Texas makes mistakes too. After Kenneth mcduff walked out of a Texas prison Scott free only to kill again. The judge in the affluenza case ought to be put in jail. Was he paid off? A lot of people in Dallas were pissed about this case when it happened.

Mexican authorities have detained so-called "affluenza" teen Ethan Couch and his mother near the popular Mexican Pacific beach resort town of Puerto Vallarta, officials briefed on the matter told CNN.

Couch, 18, went missing earlier this month, two years after he made national news when he was sentenced to probation for a drunken driving crash that killed four people.

Couch is expected to be turned over to the U.S. Marshals Service, who have spent weeks searching for him. A spokesman for the service declined to comment.

I place a good deal of blame on the mother. As a parent, you're supposed to teach your children from right and wrong and she utterly failed on that. And then aided and abetted a fugitive on top of that. She's a ditz.

They were in Puerto Vallarta specifically. I think their rationale was that there are a lot of Americans down there this time of year, so they wouldn't have stuck out like a sore thumb as much (although, it ran the risk of them being identified by Americans, which I think happened, so the 2 points may cancel each other out.) But I agree, it was stupid to flee. The authorities were determined to find them (which they did) and it was such a high profile case to begin with. Plus, Ethan is so butt ugly and distinctive looking. He tried to change his appearance by dyeing his hair, but as one LE member put it: "It didn't work very well."

An official in Mexico says a teen fugitive from Texas known for using an "affluenza" defense has been granted a three-day delay in deportation.

An official with Mexico's Migration Institute told Associated Press reporter E. Eduardo Castillo on Wednesday that 18-year-old Ethan Couch won a three-day court injunction.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he or she wasn't authorized to be quoted by name.





Couch and his mother were scheduled to be sent back to the U.S. on Wednesday. It wasn't immediately clear if his mother, Tonya Couch, also would be granted a delay.

Both had been scheduled to fly back to Houston after authorities said a phone call for pizza led to their capture in the Mexican resort city of Puerto Vallarta. They were being held at immigration offices in Guadalajara.

Couch's attorneys did not immediately return calls for comment.

I don't understand why they have granted him a stay of deportation? Did his mother pay someone there off too?

"affluenza" is the biggest BS idea I've ever heard of for escaping responsibility. It has nothing to do with money. There are plenty of poor kids who grow up with parents who don't teach them right from wrong or give them any consequences and they are still held accountable for their actions.

That judge should be thrown off the bench. The fact that he basically let Couch get away with this just reenforces this "affluenza" where he doesn't learn about having consequences for his actions. And I'm sorry, even the biggest idiot on the planet knows if you drive drunk you can kill people. They should have thrown both him and his mother in jail the first time.
