Seeing as how many television shows from yesteryear weren't exactly up to caliber as cable dramas now in terms of writing as with the case of CHiPs was the show on its last legs or could it have lasted one more season or two, I mean the show was pretty much predictable all throughout, you always knew every episode would end on a cheery outcome and nobody on the show would ever die unless of course it was a one-off guest star.

I mean what more adventures could Ponch, Nelson, Grossie and the rest go on to? Could the show have gone grittier to compete with Hill Street Blues and Miami Vice, but then that could have alienated faithful viewers too.

IMHO, the show was already alienating viewers with dumb gimmicks. The episode where Ponch falls head-over-heels for the love of his life then is never mentioned again really annoys me. :crazy:

I also believe that the show would have become an indoor type of show. They had already run out of freeway to do storylines. And some of those local warehouse scenes were no longer in the safe areas of the city. That's why in part, they began to do all those beach and harbor patrol stories. I think they even started patrolling inside a jr high; which was pushing its boundaries of credibility.

I think it was good to end the show as some never warmed up to the Nelson brothers taking over Jon's role. Ponch thankfully carried the show, but those storylines were getting too silly.

I think DOH was on its last legs too, there's only so many times the Duke boys can outwit Boss Hog before it becomes repetitive.
