View Full Version : The Race Driver
1960'sTVfan 12-17-2015, 01:47 PM I thought the race car driver guy was pretty cool. I liked him. Certainly better than the orchestra conductor guy, I didn't like him at all. Cocky and arrogant, a total jerk.
And the episode "Schneider's Kid", the actor who played Schneider's son is Darrell Larson. Darrell also appeared in The Bill Cosby Show episode "A Dirty Business".
I thought the race car driver guy was pretty cool. I liked him.
I'll say what I said last time. After her 36th birthday depression, nice belated gift for Ann.

I skipped over the race car eps. this time around, but if memory serves me correctly didn't he kick her out of his place cause he didn't want to have sex with her? Doesn't sound like such a good belated present to me!!! :D
If you don't get any d*ck, you must acquit !!!!!!!!   :D :D :D

I was flipping back and forth on this one last night, but the parts I saw they seemed pretty happy. I know they had to break them up somehow. Maybe retro or someone else can confirm if he was ultimately good for Ann.
1960'sTVfan 12-17-2015, 07:57 PM Yea, he told Ann he couldn't have sex with her, because he viewed her as more than just a one night stand, she meant more to him than that. And I guess he wasn't ready to be in a relationship either, due to his racing career, so that was that. Ann wanted to "connect" with him, but he put the brakes on. I think they would have made a good couple though, they looked good together. He was the second best choice after David. But in this still relatively early stage of the series, the writers wanted Ann to be a single woman. They just introduced these different guys and wrote episodes to let her have her flings now and then. It wasn't until towards the end of the series when they finally let her marry and she hooked up with Sam. I didn't care much for the Ann/Sam partnership, I don't think they looked all that good together.
1960'sTVfan 05-09-2016, 05:06 PM Just thought I'd bump this thread up in case anyone had comments since these episodes just aired again today. I like the race car driver guy, he's my second favorite male friend for Ann after David.

You are right, they didn't want Ann to really have a serious relationship that early in the series! They didn't want these eps to be a one night stand! And I commend (is that the right word I'm looking for) ? the guy on being a gentleman and not wanting to just use Ann!;) But IDK I don't think I would like a guy picking me up and putting me out the door!! :D
All in all I thought they were really boring eps!
And OMG!!! I cannot believe what I posted last time!!! I must have been in a whacky mood! I was unleashing my inner Johnnie Cochran I guess?

I think it's a decent two parter, it helps that Ann and the race car driver seem to have fairly good chemistry together, makes the episodes entertaining enough and watchable.

Yea, sometimes you post a comment, then read it again months later when your mindset is different, and then you say "damn what was I thinking?"

Too boring? Why? I happen to enjoy these episodes but everyone has their opinion.
Svenfan1234 05-09-2016, 09:30 PM PART 1: Ann rejects the guy, but after going to his apartment suddenly falls in love
PART 2: Ann is in love with the guy, but he rejects her, she gets mad, they call everything off
It's not even a good 2-parter!

Julie and Barbara may have been carrying sleeping bags. You should have loved it.
Svenfan1234 05-09-2016, 09:38 PM ^Lol I did think about it but nonetheless...
Anna Karenina 05-09-2016, 09:40 PM I agree with my little brother.
They wrapped up the entire show in a half hour, (including moving furniture) but give a full hour to Ann lusting after the fickle race car driver.
The guy was at least a step up from the married guy and his mid life crisis. He kept it in his pants and didn't use her for sex or to get out of a marriage.
He may have been a little boring but at least he had ethics.

I agree with you.
Yeah, it was done in one episode and I was expecting him to die in the second episode. Anybody else? It just seemed very anticlimactic in the last few minutes.
Anna Karenina 05-09-2016, 09:52 PM Ann wanted to get her groove on badly but was rejected.
I have a joke about her going upstairs to look for something in her nightstand afterwards but I won't say it here.;)

Poor Ann loved his laundry!

OK, so they built the scenario up in the 1st part, only to have the guy reject Ann in the 2nd part and nothing came of it. But that's just the point of these episodes from the earlier seasons. The writers didn't want Ann in a serious relationship. They let her have her flings and that's it. That's why David was gone early on in the 2nd season. This time with the race driver guy, Ann didn't have her fling, but at least the guy was decent enough and didn't just use Ann for some quickie sex. He told Ann that she meant more to him than just a one night stand. I like these episodes and I find the dialogue interesting between Ann and her race driver friend, especially the climax of part two when it all comes to an end. Well acted and well done.
Ann would definitely have gone in the sack with him though, she must have been feeling horny again after her fling with the annoying and arrogant maestro/orchestra conductor guy.
