Interesting. No more Too Close for Comfort? That's a shame. Glad One Day at a Time is still in the daily rotation. And nice spot for Mork & Mindy. Aside from the weekend, Dear John pretty much gets buried right off the bat. And the Sabrina addition I hadn't heard of. At first I was annoyed with a show that recent, but then The Nanny was on Antenna launched. (It just didn't last very long.) And while I don't watch them, nice also to see My Mother the Car and It's About Time still around. Those one-season curios are ideal for a channel like this.

The weekends with the exception of Carson are lousy to me. I dont watch any of those shows except Leave it to Beaver, Mr. Belvedere, One Day at a Time and Doogie Howser.

Sounds good to me, and I can always burn shows to a DVD and watch them at my convenience. I'll really do cartwheels if they ever get Room 222 and The Farmer's Daughter.

Looks pretty lousy to me. If Dear John is new, why is it in a graveyard slot on weekdays? And Good Times and Sanford and Son in the same spots? And One Day at a Time is way too early in the day. Good thing I don't watch this channel anymore because of their stupid credit crunch. But I might tune into Carson a time or two to see what he's like but I doubt I would watch regularly.

Yup, Belvedere on every weekday is a good call. The show was missed by many during 80s first-run. It's also very well written. Things I suggest for ATV: Room 222, Laugh-In, Riptide, Family, Eight Is Enough, It's a Living and Family. Anyone having an "oh yeah, I miss that show!" moment?

That's sad to hear, because it was a charming show. Maybe someone somewhere will restore some of them. At least I can salvage a few eps from You Tube meanwhile.

I am happy to see Dear John on tv even though the poor time slot doesnt give it much chance of succedding. I am excited to see Carson it should be fun to watch after all these years. I used to watch every night back in the 80's.

5 shows on a weekend schedule is a lot for me. There isnt any Cable or OTA channel that I watch 5 shows. With some of the bad schedules on tv these days I am happy when i get a channel that has 2-3 shows I like.

Is Antenna TV planning an opening weekend Johnny Carson marathon? The night of January 1st my listings show a 3 hour episode with McLean Stevensen and Eddie Murphy from 11PM-2AM with an immediate encore from 2-5AM. And the night of January 2nd lists him from 10PM-4:30AM with several guests. I don't know if they're all 90 minute episodes that are just listed in one block on my page. Also in the 10PM hour leading into the Carson premiere on Friday: The Jack Benny Program airs at 10:00 with Johnny as his guest; then there's a special on Carson's career at 10:30 with several celebrities including Jay Leno, Bob Newhart, and Doc Severinson.

January 2- 1-1-75 Foster Brooks,Victor Buono,Joan Embery
January 3- 5-21-74 Bob Hope,Michael Landon,Freddie Prinze,Don Rickles,Carol Wayne.

Sorry about that. That is from my signature. I'll change it by the New Year, I promise. What I meant earlier was that when I see the schedules from Antenna TV and ME-TV, I always have an "Oh Yeah I Miss That Show" moment because I can't get ANY of their shows on my TV stations. Seriously, it's like looking forward to a big feast and only getting crumbs.

But, I have to add that there is a little hope on the way. One of Canada's two retro stations, Comedy Gold, will be bringing back Mary Tyler Moore and I Love Lucy to their schedule in January (by popular demand, I'm sure) and they will also add the original (I hope!) Odd Couple with Jack Klugman and Tony Randall. So that will be a welcome change from the usual tedium that they currently have. The other channel, DejaView, will, unsurprisingly, be making no changes at all, so you're stuck with what's there, which, other than Three's Company, doesn't amount to very much.

Now for all you Johnny Carson fans, here's a more detailed look at what's on for the first week of shows on Antenna TV:

Friday January 1

Johnny Carson Returns: Antenna TV to Air Full ‘Tonight Show’ Episodes

Cynthia Littleton

Managing Editor: Television

@Variety_Cynthia

Just when it seemed the late-night landscape couldn’t get more competitive, here comes Johnny Carson.

Tribune Media’s Antenna TV, the multicast digital channel devoted to vintage television shows, will run full-length episodes of “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” nightly at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT starting Jan. 1.

Antenna TV has struck a multi-year deal with Carson Entertainment Group to license hundreds of hours of the NBC late-night institution. Antenna will run episodes that aired from 1972 through the end of Carson’s 30-year reign in in 1992. Because NBC owns the rights to “The Tonight Show” moniker, Antenna TV’s episodes will be billed simply as “Johnny Carson.”

“This is not a clip show. This is full episodes of Johnny Carson, the man that everyone in late-night agrees was the greatest host of all time, airing in real time as he did back in the day,” Sean Compton, Tribune’s president of strategic programming and acquisitions, told Variety. “Tuning in to ‘The Tonight Show’ is like taking a walk down Main Street in Disneyland. The minute you step in there, you feel good and you know it’s a place you want to stay. We cannot wait to bring this show to fans who remember Carson and to a new generation of viewers who have never had the chance to see Johnny in his prime.”

Antenna’s showcase will mark the first time Carson-era “Tonight Show” episodes have aired on a nightly basis since the host signed off in May 1992. Carson stayed out of the spotlight after his retirement until his death at age 79 on Jan. 23, 2005.

“The Tonight Show” ran in a 90-minute format from the start of Carson’s run in 1962 until 1980, when it was trimmed to an hour. Antenna will air hourlong episodes on weeknights and 90-minute installments on Saturday and Sunday at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.

The scheduling of episodes will be carefully curated to run as themed weeks or months, as well as episodes that coincide with notable anniversaries, holidays and other milestones. Those could include everything from a week’s worth of “Tonight Show” debuts by future comedy superstars such as Jerry Seinfeld, Jay Leno, Ellen DeGeneres, Richard Pryor, David Letterman, Jim Carrey and Tim Allen to a month of Christmas episodes in December. Antenna’s “Tonight Show” run will begin with the New Year’s Day episode from 1982 featuring Eddie Murphy and “MASH” star McLean Stevenson.

With all the hubbub over changes in late-night TV during the past two years, Compton had the idea to revive Carson’s “Tonight Show” in a big way. Carson Entertainment Group, headed by Jeff Sotzing, Carson’s nephew, was immediately receptive.

“I think there’s a demographic out there that is really going to eat this up,” Sotzing told Variety. “The show will now be able to be seen by so many people who haven’t seen it before.”

The deal involved nearly six months of negotiations with Hollywood’s talent guilds and the American Federation of Musicians. The talks were complicated because there’s not much precedent for residual fees for full-length reruns of a vintage variety show re-airing on a digital broadcast channel. A few weeks ago the deal almost fell apart over cost issues that seemed insurmountable, but Compton and his team kept hammering away until compromises were reached.

Tribune execs are determined to keep each episode as intact as possible — which means negotiating new agreements for the show’s many musical performances on an episode-by-episode basis, in most cases.

The full-length segs will re-introduce viewers to the show that cemented the template for the late-night talk-variety format, from the monologue to goofy banter with sidekicks to showcasing promising comedians. Carson also invented a host of characters over the years, including Carnac the Magnificent, Art Fern and Aunt Blabby, as well the leading the “Mighty Carson Art Players” sketches. Carson, Ed McMahon and bandleader Doc Severinsen were also famous for doing in-program commericals. Tribune’s sales department is looking to set up creative sponsorship deals piggybacking on those now-priceless integrations, Compton said.

Carson Entertainment has marketed home video releases of full-length “Tonight Show” episodes in the past. But that’s not the same as being able to tune in every night as the show originally aired.

Sadly, the first 10 years of Carson’s “Tonight Show” are lost to history, with only a handful of episodes that survive. When the “Tonight Show” made its historic move from New York to Burbank in 1972, Carson realized that NBC had no archive of his older episodes. From then on, Carson Entertainment invested in state-of-the-art archival technology to preserve his legacy — a focus that continues today.

The 1972-1992 episodes have been digitized and meticulously transcribed and catalogued. The master tapes are buried 600 feet below the earth in a salt mine in Hutchinson, Kan. There are multiple digital copies housed in safe locations as well, according to Sotzing.

“We continue to spend money to protect the library and make sure it’s a working library,” he said. With digital technology, “it’s amazing how we have gone from 50-pound two-inch videotapes to having hundreds of shows on a single (computer) drive.”

Carson was pleasantly surprised after his retirement that there was a home video market for older “Tonight Show” episodes. Sotzing said he has no doubt his uncle would be happy that his life’s work still had value to a modern TV network.

Launched in 2011, Antenna TV is carried on the multicast channels of broadcast TV stations around the country, including Tribune-owned stations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and other top markets. All told, Antenna at present is available in 102 TV markets reaching 78% of the nation’s television households. Antenna does not have broad SVOD rights to the “Tonight Show” episodes but will be able to make them available on a limited basis for authenticated streaming through MVPD partners.

Antenna’s schedule lineup at present is anchored by such evergreens as “All in the Family,” “Bewitched,” “Green Acres,” “Father Knows Best,” “The Partridge Family” and “Leave It to Beaver.” The investment in Carson’s “Tonight Show” library is a sign that Tribune is ready to raise the profile of Antenna TV. The channel is profitable even with a modest, older-skewing audience. The hope is that a combination of nostalgia and interest in the legend of Carson will drive broader sampling of the channel.

The “Tonight Show” project has been a labor of love for Compton, who has screened hundreds of episodes to prepare for assembling the themed packages. The plan is for Antenna to be nimble in programming episodes on short notice to respond to headlines and current events.

“With Johnny you just have everything,” Compton enthused. “On the night of (the 2016) Indy 500, we’ll have an episode of Johnny talking about about the race. On Christmas Eve, we’ll have an episode with Jimmy Stewart telling stories about the making of ‘It’s a Wonderful Life.’ Our possibilities are endless.”

As for Dear John, it's on weekends at a decent time. Besides, Doogie Howser was also given an overnight slot during the week, so I don't get your complaint.

Yea I agree. I'll DVR it and probably watch it around 6 or 7 pm. It is hard to get new fans for a show if it isn't treated right though.

It's going to be extremely interesting to see how Johnny does in the ratings! They paid a lot of freaking money for it so I hope for their sake it works out. It's got a lot of buzz right now and I know of quite a few people who are planning to watch it. I wouldn't worry about it bombing, I really dont get the feeling that's gonna happen. My feeling is the opposite, that it's going to do extremely well. The Vault Collection DVDs sold phenomenally last year as did the Featured Guest Collection DVDs this year. From what o read both sets far surpassed sales expectations. I have both sets...very satisfied with both! I got the Featured Guest set for Christmas, working through it now but completely satisfied with it so far. I hope to God this deal with Antenna TV will not spell the end of the DVD/iTunes releases. I'd like to one day have every surviving episode in my collection. I'm confident with time that will happen but probably won't until next generation blu Ray discs. Hoping for the some for Jay Leno too.

My only tough spot now is finding a DVR I can use for this and then transfer to PC so I can get the episodes onto an external HDD. Getting it to the PC is the then to the external HDD is the easy part. That's the plan right now but logistically that's gonna be a challenge for me. I'll figure that out by Thursday! Regardless very happy to see them doing this and ratings for it oughtta be interesting.

This is the first time I have ever seen it and Robin Williams is so funny. Haven't laughed this hard in a long time. I don't know what new shows they will be adding whenever that is. I won't be watching them there but I will still be interested to see if they uncover any unknown shows to me so I can go find them somewhere else. I still want a One Day at a Time release from Shout really bad. I'm hoping to get All in the Family, Maude, and The Jeffersons complete series in late 2016 or sometime in 2017 but I need to save my money now and I have plenty to watch already at the moment. I also plan to get WKRP complete series later this year even though I don't plan to watch it anytime soon. I just need it so I can watch the Turkey Drop episode at Thanksgiving.

I totally agree about Johnny Carson. I tried watching two or three times but I just couldn't get into it much and didn't find it interesting or funny. I think it was a big waste of money. I saw a little bit of Wings a few years back and I wasn't that impressed with it so probably not. Webster looks like something I would want but unfortunately only 4 seasons are on DVD. I can't find a complete series homemade set but I do see one on ioffer that is only missing 6 episodes and it lists the episodes. One missing from Season 3, one from 4, two from 5, and two from 6, so really all I'd be missing is 4 episodes since 3 and 4 are available on DVD. January 3- 5-21-74 Bob Hope,Michael Landon,Freddie Prinze,Don Rickles,Carol Wayne.

As for Dear John, it's on weekends at a decent time. Besides, Doogie Howser was also given an overnight slot during the week, so I don't get your complaint.

Johnny Carson Returns: Antenna TV to Air Full ‘Tonight Show’ Episodes

Cynthia Littleton

Managing Editor: Television

@Variety_Cynthia

This stuff about music clearances is mostly a pack of lies. I'm sure they tried but the unions are unbelievable.

Some aren't out on Mother's Day. If it's raining or whatever. People aren't always out. You need to stop making blanket statements.

I hope Antenna will add Alice and Chico and the Man this fall. The ones that are the full-length cuts instead of 22 minutes. But that may be asking for too much.

I hope MeTV will instead because I don't want the credits crunched on Antenna.

It's his opinion, and it's true, a lot of moms go out for Mother's Day. You disagreeing doesn't change that.

I just wish Antenna would put on a variety of shows that have Mothers in the show on Mothers day! Not just a Marathon of one show. Along with Family ties, they could do One day at a time, Leave it to Beaver, Dennis the menace, The Jeffersons, Good Times, All in the family, Hazel !

That's what they did Labor Day, work themed episodes of the shows in their regular time slot, and I think you weren't impressed by that either. What's a poor programming department to do?

That was just it, the shows were in their same time slot, and a lot of them didn't even have to do much with work themed topics that much. It was a hum-drum marathon I thought! I wish they would just have a bunch of Antenna TV shows randomly played for the theme! ;)

Cozi is doing a Bionic Woman marathon for Mother's Day, and as far as I know she didn't even have any bionic kids.
