View Full Version : Why is "Love Boat" in 1970s Sitcoms forum instead of 1980s Sitcoms forum?
James28 12-16-2015, 02:05 AM I find it questionable that The Love Boat is in the 1970s Sitcoms forum instead of the 1980s Sitcoms forum. Its original airing was from 1977 to 1986; Two-thirds of its original run was during the 1980s decade; And its ratings peak (a 24.3 rating) was during the 1980-81 season, its fourth.
biffbronson 12-16-2015, 03:03 AM The Love Boat did have a 1976 made-for-TV movie -- and that is solidly mid-'70s. With 3 full seasons that began prior to 1980 ('77, '78, '79).
I vote for 1970s because the earliest and most significant part of its run, in my opinion, happened in that decade.
Further, I think most people who look for the forum will expect to see it in the '70s section. Sorry to have to disagree.

That will most likely result heated disputes/debate, since Love Boat had six full seasons in the 1980s out of nine total, and its popularity peaked in the first year of that decade. I'd rather see it in the '80s section.
And if there were a series of "Decades" channels on TV, I'd rather see Love Boat reran on the 1980s channel rather than the 1970s channel.
Coffeecup 12-16-2015, 10:19 AM It makes sense to me to have the show put into the decade when the show started.
Bonniegirl 12-16-2015, 11:10 AM Yeah!!I always think of the Love boat as more of a 70's than an 80's show even though it ran in two decades!
MichaelKeith 12-16-2015, 01:19 PM I agree the shows should be put into the decade in which they started so Love Boat is in 1970s.
I also think that on this forum The Donna Reed Show should be in the 1950s as it started in 1958 but it's listed here in the 1960s.
And The Doris Day Show should be in the 1960s as it started in 1968 but it's listed here in the 1970s.

I'm sure it's just the decision of the editors where to put boards for shows. I'm more of the opinion that shows should be put in the decade where they aired the most, so Donna Reed would be in 1960s and Doris Day in 1970s. I don't think anyone really associates The Brady Bunch with the 1960s more than the 1970s, but it did premiere in 1969. I would put The Love Boat in the 1980s if it were my decision. Leave It to Beaver is in the 1950s category even though it (just barely) had a majority of its run in the 1960s.
I'm wondering now when there will be a 2010s sitcoms category. We're now more than halfway through this decade, and shows that premiered in the 2010s and/or appeared more in the 2010s than any other decade are leaving the air and will need to move out of the "Current Sitcoms" category, but it makes no sense to have them with the 2000s Sitcoms.
robyrob 12-16-2015, 02:52 PM the show's peak was in the 70's, and it was obviously set in the 70's with a 70's feel to it - by the time it was airing in the 80's, it was still living like it was the 70's.

Let's say that The Love Boat's peak creatively was during the 1970s, but its peak in terms of ratings technically wasn't, so the rating peak was during the 1980s, and I was acting like shows' peaks in creativity didn't matter, and all I was focusing on was ratings and ranks.
The ratings for The Love Boat over the years (when it was ranked in the Nielsen Top 30:
1977-78: 21.9 rating (#14)
1978-79: 22.1 rating (#17)
1979-80: 20.6 rating (#23)
1980-81: 24.3 rating (#5)
1981-82: 21.2 rating (#14)
1982-83: 20.3 rating (#9)
1983-84: 19.0 rating (#17)
1979-80: 20.6 rating (#23)
1980-81: 24.3 rating (#5)
Is there any overwhelming reason for the jump into the top 5?
TVFactFan 12-19-2015, 04:41 PM Is there any overwhelming reason for the jump into the top 5?
Weaker competition that season
James28 12-19-2015, 06:04 PM Is there any overwhelming reason for the jump into the top 5?
Another reason for Love Boat's sudden jump into the Top 10 was the decline in ratings for Three's Company from a 26.3 to a 22.4, and TC was dealing with Suzanne Somers's controversial salary demands.
Crusinforabrusin 08-20-2016, 09:18 PM If the show began in the 70s, then it is a 70s show. If it began in the 70s and continued into the 80s, it is still a 70s show.

If a series ran for more years in the 1980s than it did in the 1970s (six in the '80s compared to only three in the '70s), and its highest-rated season was at the beginning of the 1980s, then it should be recognized as a 1980s show rather than a 1970s show, bottom line.

If the show began IN the 70s it IS a 70s show. If a show began anywhere in between 1970-1979 it's a 70s show . Get your facts straight
TVFactFan 08-21-2016, 01:24 PM I think since the show started in the fall of 77 it;s a 70's show. Now if it started in 1979 then I would not feel that way.

False. Facts of Life started in the fall of 1979 and it's considered a 80's show

I don't think you understand; Love Boat wasn't cancelled until 1986. If I wanted to recognize Love Boat as a 1970s show, then it would have to end in 1982 or 1983.
Svenfan1234 08-21-2016, 01:54 PM ^LOL

So is TVFactFan. He's even gone on record saying he hates The Love Boat and yet here he is posting on a thread about The Love Boat.

You really do need to leave him alone.
Crusinforabrusin 08-21-2016, 02:12 PM You really do need to leave him alone.
Well If TvFactFan does not like a Tv show, he should not be posting on that forum, in this case, The Love Boat.

How can I? He's always calling me autistic and generally insulting me!
Zoneboy 08-21-2016, 02:13 PM Although I consider The Love Boat to be a 70's sitcom, I would take it and any other sitcom that crossed over into another decade and list them under each one they aired in. For example:
1970's sitcoms:
Alice
The Love Boat
1980's sitcoms:
Alice (continued)
The Love Boat (continued)
This shouldn't even be necessary, but for those that can't decide what decade a show should be listed under regardless of when it debuted then I see no other alternative.
Crusinforabrusin 08-21-2016, 02:14 PM How can I? He's always calling me autistic and generally insulting me!
He is being a p*** as usual. You can do one of 3 things: Block Him, Ignore Him, or report Him. If you don't like what he says, block him and your troubles are gone.
Mr. Television 08-21-2016, 02:22 PM How can I? He's always calling me autistic and generally insulting me!
Block him. Otherwise all we all see are fights in these threads. There are times when you start it too. It just gets tiring. I have a few people on ignore. It's less stressful.

I do have him on ignore and yet he still p****s about me all the freaking time.
Mr. Television 08-21-2016, 02:26 PM Well If TvFactFan does not like a Tv show, he should not be posting on that forum, in this case, The Love Boat.
As long as he doesn't come into a thread just to trash the show he's done nothing wrong. I hate Friends and the Office but I'm sure I've posted in those threads over the years. In fact practically the whole current sitcoms board I hate.
Mr. Television 08-21-2016, 02:26 PM I do have him on ignore and yet he still p****s about me all the freaking time.
Then how would you know if you didn't look to see what he had to say? I don't see him saying anything about you in this thread but you did bring him up.

I only do when he's posted on the same board as me, and its always an insult. The mods need to ban him.

Why don't you just block him? When you block him, you won't be able to see any of his posts ok? Now can we just go back to discussing the original topic of this thread?

What do you mean block him? Is that different than ignoring him?

TVFactFan is like the lowest form of scum on this earth. He has no friends and lives in a trashy city and is so desperate he goes on a dating website!
Crusinforabrusin 08-21-2016, 02:54 PM What do you mean block him? Is that different than ignoring him?
Ignoring is when you don't pay attention to him. Blocking is when you actively press a button that says block and you won't see that person's posts again unless you unblock them

He is not. That's just who he is I guess. Maybe he finds fun in insulting others. I don't necessarily like insulting others but some find it funny. Just let him be .

It's ok. I reported him and sent a lengthy email to the Mods about why he should be banned from this website.

Your lengthy email as you call it was totally unnecessary. I can assure you of one thing and that is the administrators don't need any explanations as to why a member should be banned. They have been here way longer than you have and are perfectly capable of making that decision without the added input. If you have a problem then report it and give a brief explanation why. They will review the situation and take whatever action is needed.

I think that's what I would do, also. While both "70s shows" continued until the mid-1980s, Alice had four seasons air in the 1970s while The Love Boat had only three seasons. Plus, at least Alice's Nielsen ratings peak was during the 1970s (Season 4, 1979-80, 25.3 average rating).
gopyle 09-22-2016, 06:22 PM Let's see. If I was looking for a show in the 80s forum and couldn't find it, and I knew it also aired in the 70s, what I would do is look in the 70s forum.

But Matlock starring Andy Griffith started in 1986 and ended in 1995, but Matlock is in the 90s forums?
After contemplating this for the last five years, I'm moving it to the 1980s sitcoms section. Although I think it had more a 1970s vibe to it well into the 1980s, more seasons and episodes aired during the 1980s. I will leave a redirect in the 1970s sitcoms section, so people can still find it there.

Yeah I guess I can see that, 2 seasons full in 70's and 7 in the 80's
biffbronson 05-13-2021, 04:51 AM Man, my memory is really getting shot. I argued one way in this thread (2015), but yesterday I claimed I had argued the opposite...! So think I owe James28 an apology.
1960'sTVfan 05-13-2021, 10:14 AM The Love Boat started in 1977 and ran well into the 1980's so it's true the majority of episodes aired in the 1980's. But to me, the series has a 1970's vibe to it so I consider it a 1970's show and would have kept it in the 1970's section here but that's just my opinion.
Fallon97 05-18-2021, 05:04 PM I always thought that Love Boat has a more 80s vibe. Many people seem to associate the 80s with upbeat, colorfulness, lightheartedness, glamour, and a soapyness. And that's how I also look at Love Boat.

Arguably, a lot of people also associate the 80s with downbeat grittiness, like Miami Vice, Hill Street Blues, St. Elsewhere, Wiseguy, China Beach, T.J. Hooker, Manimal, The Equalizer, etc. If the 70s weren't upbeat, lighthearted and colorful, then you weren't watching The Brady Bunch, The Partridge Family, Three's Company or even Donny & Marie. For that matter, even the 60s were upbeat with The Monkees, I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched, Jetsons, Flintstones and F-Troop.
