Rhoda and Joe had just dated periodically and Brenda and Benny had been the married ones.. Rhoda was very independent and Brenda seemed more the settling down type for that era.. Plus, Brenda and Benny got along so well they would have done well as the married ones, while Rhoda continued dating adventures, dating Joe and then maybe other men...

As far as I know, Benny wasn't even in the picture until Joe was on his way out. To get your way, you would have had to take a time machine back to 1974 and told the writers about Benny. In reality, a lot of Rhoda was just the writers learning as they go.

Ty for your reply. I had thought she had been seeing Benny longer or there was some other guy she was involved with.. It has been a while since I saw the reruns.. By the way, would it have been better you think if Rhoda had been single during the show?

Nah, Benny didn't begin to appear until the tail end of Season 3, after Joe's final appearance, I believe. In regards to Rhoda being single the whole time, I'm not sure it would have made things better. It's odd the writers didn't have more plots involving Joe's son. Sometimes it was easy to forget he was a father.
