Read a rumor that actor Ray Middleton was up for the role of Henry before George Gaynes was even considered. However, once he auditioned with Soleil Moon Frye, they had no chemistry.

Is this true?

George Gwynn and Wilford Brimley were considered as well but never given serious thought. Ned Beatty was though...

I could see Ray Middleton. Similar type, about the same age.

But yeah, without chemistry, what's the point?

Fred Gwynne also was considered, but he backed out when a casting agent referred to him as Herman Munster, his role on The Munsters.
