She was really good on the show.

Lots of threads on this subject, but supposedly Linda Lavin did not like getting upstaged by a co-star, and basically people were watching "Alice" for Flo, and Holliday was getting more of the fan mail, and probably "Kiss my Grits" entered the popular culture.

CBS decided to give Holliday her own show, which separated her from Lavin. Unfortunately, Holliday's show died after a season while Alice went on another five or six years. Holliday's replacement, Diane Ladd (who was in the movie that Alice sprang from) lasted a year and left (probably because of Lavin) and then Celia Weston, who stayed until the end of the show's run.
