I thought some of you would be interested in what Antenna TV told me in an e-mail explaining why they do that credit crunch and split screen.
They said they don't like to but the unfortunate reality is with more and more digi-nets coming on the market programing costs are rising, and they have to do something to counter-act them. They looked at many options, but unfortunately this one seemed the best.

Oh, and they also said they WILL show Johnny Carson uncut, unfortunately though they may have to edit little bits of music due to copyright issues.

Well at least we have an explanation. I will say that if I was Antenna I really wouldn't worry. They have a strong lineup plus they have a lot of clearance and affiliates.

This makes more sense than that stupid story on Facebook about people wanting a quicker transition. But this has ruined it for me so I have quit watching Antenna TV. Although I may still check out Johnny Carson, although I doubt I would watch that very much.

The credit-crunch really doesn't bug me...I feel that TV is just going to be 29 minutes of commercial, 1 minute of show real soon....

I'd like to know what the other options were. Again, I dont think they had to do that because the fact that they have a strong lineup of shows plus I think there in like 88% of the country, I wouldnt sweat the other stations. And honestly, I dont understand them crunching the credits for 10 seconds or whatever. The 10 second credit crunch makes that big of a difference?

I know. I can maybe understand the split screen because it gives time for another commercial, but the 10-15 seconds during primetime makes no sense because the ads are all promos for Antenna TV, so why is that necessary when we see those same ads during regular commercial breaks? That was just stupid.

OH Nuts!

The credit crunch is not a deal breaker for me; I still love the channel.

It's not for me either. Still just glad to have it. And that is a far more logical and realistic explanation for the credit crunches. I never bought the quicker transitions thing either.

I like to know who the guest are on the episode I just watched! Stupid management decision! That another reason on these old shows, I try to find commercial free uncut versions on the Internet so I can watch the at my pleasure and have control over the content! Getting tough with many content provides now adding commercials!

Antenna TV could stand to get some better commercials. The same medical lawsuits over and over again can't make them a lot of money. I gotta admit my Antenna TV viewing has decreased as a result.

Yeah!! And also the Cancer center commercials, Animal abuse commercials, Starving children in Africa commercials and ITT tech and other training school commercials over and over again!! :( Other than that I love Antenna!! Same thing on METV, Cozi and also even on IDTV ! The price we pay if we go off the grid and don't watch the major network TV channels I guess?

Well the bad commercials don't bother me nearly as much as the credit crunch.

I like to know who the guests are too. If this info is cut, it's not hard to find on the Internet. I've had to do this a few times. True, it's a (minor) inconvenience, but overall, not a deal-breaker; I'm still grateful to see shows that I thought were long gone dead and buried ( like Bachelor Father, Patty Duke, My Mother The Car, Gidget-to name a few).

I'm not mad at them anymore for crunching the credits and having the split screen since I read that e-mail. I still don't like it, though.

Very lame reason for screwing up shows and a lie.

More commercial time for them to make more money is the real reason.

I couldn't care less that a tv shows' credits are crunched and squeezed into a ten second space after the show is over. I don't watch televison for the closing credits - I watch it for what goes on BEFORE the closing credits roll. They can do away with closing credits completely as far as I am concerned.

It goes hand-in-hand, though. If programming costs rise, then they need the extra revenue from commercials in order to survive. It's a vicious cycle.

Well, they are a free channel, so these (minor) drawbacks really don't bother me. If I had to pay for Antenna, then maybe I'd be a little annoyed.

Ditto from me too. Because they are free, they have to do what they need to do. And with such an abundance of great shows (and marathons!), you won't hear any griping about Antenna from me.

Why do you think that's a lie? It makes perfect sense. When Antenna TV launched, there was ME-TV (and RTV as well) and that was about it as far as diginets that carried classic TV was concerned. Jump to 2015, and there's Cozi, Laff and Decades all in the classic TV field. And let's not forget as these channels get higher and higher clearance, the shows can be exposed to more and more viewers. I wouldn't be surprised at all if there's something of a bidding war for these repeats going on.

Plus, when the Johnny Carson deal was announced, it was reported that the deal took months to complete, and almost fell apart due to "insurmountable" cost issues, but compromises were worked out. Despite the compromises, I'm sure the show cost a pretty penny -- and the truth is Antenna's got to make that money back somehow. If you think about it, the split-screen credits really didn't take full hold until the Carson deal was announced.

Bottom line is: Antenna's saying its programming costs are rising. And I don't doubt that at all.

And I hate that the programming costs are rising. Maybe they should have not gotten Carson and possibly even kept more of the movies, even if I don't care to watch them, because they were probably cheaper. And then maybe they wouldn't have to crunch the credits.

My feeling now is it was bound to happen eventually anyway, Carson or no Carson. Because the programming costs are only going one way, and it's not down.

Our local fox station (which carries AntennaTV) is doing Johnny Carson promotional segments during its hour-long local newscasts all this week.

Good news, Wane has decided to keep Antenna TV for 3 more months. Bad news, it will still be gone at the end of March. This is the 2nd time it's been extended now, you would think Wane would get a clue and keep Antenna TV permanently.

Congratulations and happy viewing. I think Antenna's a great channel. And btw, I LOVE Pgh! It's a beautiful and friendly city. I have cousins who live in Edgewood and Squirrel Hill. I never miss having a ride on one of the inclines when I visit.

Pgh is indeed a great city. If I ever get priced out of NYC, I'd seriously consider moving there.

A Carson Question?

How will Antenna TV show Carson uncut with the opening titles "The Tonight Show, starring Johnny Carson?" as NBC owns The Tonight Show rights?
