This is a Facebook post from his daughter, Teresa:

Tresa Harrington:

It is with a broken heart that my father is succumbing to Alzheimer's. After falling three weeks ago, a small hemmorage in his brain, and three weeks of hospital/nursing home, he is mentally and physically disintegrating. I weep, knowing he is not long on this earthly plane; cussing at him today to get him to open his mouth to eat the pureed food, as his swallowing mechanism isn't functioning so well, but then alas, he opens his mouth for ice cream...

I break down, laying my head on his chest, and the first sign of recognition, as he places he hand behind my head, to comort me. He wanted to ease my pain. I pray that what ever happens, in the next days or weeks, that it is for the best. And if Nama, Daddoo and Uncle Terry, want him home, than that is where he should be. I love you, daddy!!!

So sorry to hear this. Mr. Harrington gave the gift of laughter to so many over his long career. It's sad his final days are being spent like this.

That's very sad. Thankfully, he seems to be cared for by an attentive family and they're doing all they can to help him enjoy what he can in life even if he's losing who he was.

I wonder if this may be what's happened with his one time castmate Nanette Fabray (at 95) and that's why we've seen or heard nothing from her in the last few years?

Of ALL the afflictions and conditions of the elderly, I think this is the one most URGENTLY in need to be cured and wiped out!:(

It is a horrible way to end your life...I hope he doesn't suffer long with this.

I was just watching this comic genius on The Golden Girls the other day and thinking what a shame it was that he wasn't given any more chances to shine on TV, he was seemingly forgotten by the television industry.

I wondered where he was all this time and then I read this heartbreaking post. For anybody who has had to say goodbye to a parent, his daughter's message really hits home.

God Bless him and his family.

As somebody who recently lost a parent to Alzheimer's disease, I know how his family is feeling. The last few weeks were the toughest when he had problems swallowing solid food and could no longer walk.

I'm glad that Mr. Harrington will be around his family for however much time he has left. It's such a terrible disease that affects the family and caregivers. Losing a loved one around the holidays would be difficult for anyone.

Prayers for Mr. Harrington at this difficult time. He was an important part of One Day At A Time, bringing talent, energy and humor with the role of Schneider. The show wouldn't have been the same without him.
