View Full Version : The BBC has no problem releasing old shows online with politically incorrect humor

One of the episodes being released is one from John Cleese’s Fawlty Towers that the BBC banned from being racially insensitive.
robyrob 11-21-2015, 12:17 PM BBC/BBCAmerica wants to provide a new pay service streaming app that would provide access to more BBC programming, unfortunately it would not include current shows like Doctor Who or Orphan Black, or any of the classic sitcoms like Fawlty Towers.
So what will it provide? Who knows - that was enough to tell me it wasn't worth it.

I wouldn't mind if the BBC was consistent in its approach, but I'm afraid an awful lot of hypocrisy abounds these days.
Babalu 02-21-2016, 03:28 PM Unfortunately the USA is imprisoned by PC liberals who claim to represent freedom of speech - so long as it agrees with them. That's why people here watch and fondly remember old shows.

I wish BBCAmerica would go back to showing old British shows instead of Star Trek: TNG re runs.

That's not why, you nitwit.

Pay no attention to him. He doesn't speak for me. He thinks ALL Liberals are in favor of Political Correctness, when there is also right-wing Political Correctness, as well.

So what then?
WalterTheDrinker 03-31-2016, 01:15 PM So what then?
Huh?
Vahan 03-31-2016, 01:20 PM Right-wingers like to call people like me who say Modern Hollywood (1960's-Present) is better than Golden Age Hollywood (1920's-1950's) a Communist Traitor.

We have better reasons than that.

I think that has a lot to do with it. Retro networks are popping up like crazy because people long for a time when it seemed TV was actually good. Here's a clue the PC types will never understand: when you're trying to be careful not to offend anybody or hurt anyone's feelings, you can't put out good TV. It really is that simple. Someone has to get their feelings hurt if you're going to be memorable.

That's an absolutely absurd point of view. People watch old shows because they were good, entertaining shows and they provoke a nostalgic recall of one's earlier life. That's it.
And news flash: there are great TV shows on today that will continue to be watched decades from now. And more great TV shows will be made in the future.
This shoehorning of little political correctness goblins into every facet of life is, frankly, a really embarrassing way to live.
And insisting that you have to hurt people's feelings to provide memorable TV is completely idiotic. How many feelings were routinely hurt by My Three Sons and Leave It To Beaver and Make Room For Daddy and The Brady Bunch and Family Affair and I Love Lucy and The Honeymooners?

I'm not really a fan of television (or those shows, except for LITB), before the 1970s. In fact I'd say it's pretty much 1970s TV I'm only a fan of. Sanford and Son, All in The Family, Three's Company, etc., all those shows were confonting societal prejudices, but they also weren't afraid to use politically incorrect jokes and racist/sexist/homophobic humor to get laughs. The problem is these days people no longer try to use humor to confront racism/sexism/homophobia. People just think we should be past it by now and they just get upset over it. P.C. people need to realize the best way to win people over to your point of view is through humor. That's the problem these days. Nobody's laughing anymore. It's all deadly serious. And actually I've heard progressives criticize Ralph Kramden for saying "to the moon" to Alice. Progressives were offended by Lucy being the moron who has to be set straight by her husband. And progressives were just offended for some reason that June Cleaver might have been wearing pearls while vacuuming in the house, so yes, even The Honeymooners, I Love Lucy, and Leave it To Beaver are offensive to some overly sensitive progressives who dream of a better world. And in general, I would say overall modern progressives would be offended by the lack of diversity in the casts of those pre-1970s shows. Too lily-white for a lot of people's tastes. The lack of diversity is enough to offend some people.

I suppose you could say right now there are a lot of dramas out there today people like such as The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, or Game of Thrones those statements apply to. But not comedies. The Big Bang Theory is a rare modern comedy classic mainly because Sheldon Cooper has no filter and doesn't try to watch what he says around people. Sheldon is precisely funny because he doesn't give a damn if people are offended by what he says. We need more Sheldony characters on sitcoms. The reality is the jerks are usually the most memorable people in sitcoms. A comedy can't work if there isn't a character saying outrageous offensive things. Nice and kind are not hilarious attributes. When you stop laughing at the jerks and start being offended and demand they be removed from the TV screen, what you're left with is boring crap that isn't going to last.

So because a very tiny segment of the population consists of whiners who take extreme offense to fairly innocuous details in entertainment and media, you're going to latch onto a ridiculous post that castigates liberals at the expense of reality and common sense?
If you want comedy that pushes the envelope, that's fine. That's an important ingredient in many forms of comedy. But there are plenty of ways to be funny without pushing the envelope and rustling feathers.
And if you don't think risky comedy exists on TV today, there are many, many great shows you seem to be unaware of. Curb Your Enthusiasm. Arrested Development. Veep. Louie. Silicon Valley. Check all of these out, if you can. (Just stay away from the Netflix season of Arrested Development. It stinks.)

While there are smaller groups of Conservatives that get offended over silly things, Hollywood ignores those critics, however they always seem to accommodate Liberal criticism of their programming. For some reason Hollywood always worries about what progressives think.

That's your perception. And I would argue it's skewed.
Hollywood is, first and foremost, a business. They follow the dollars as much as any other industry. If conservative programming were a huge moneymaker, it would be all over TV, "buhleeve me."

Well the general American public is often more liberal than I am when it comes to many social issues. I still stand by my statement that TV was better before it followed political correctness, but it does seem most Americans do want political correctness these days. I usually don't like hanging around most people for that reason. My tastes are different, I must admit. But some folks also do understand my point of view.
