I always assumed that Wally's was way off on the outskirts of Mayberry, not really walking distance from anywhere in town. So I was startled while watching "Opie's Girlfriend," when Ope and Helen's niece, Cynthia, are in the Taylor's front yard, and Opie says, "See that tree by the gas station? Race you to it!" They sprint past what looks like the unpainted side of a barn, then they're on a dirt road in the woods, and then they're at the tree... at which point Goober calls to them from the gas station. That seemed surreal to me; one of those "What did I just see??" moments.
Again, just an observation from a concerned citizen. ;)

I've often wondered about that. It appears to be in an isolated area on the outskirts of town. But in Man in a Hurry, Gomer runs from Wally's to Andy's house to tell Malcolm Tucker that Goober got his car running. So apparently it wasn't too far away. I assume Gomer couldn't call Andy's house because the Mendelbright sisters were still on the phone. What a pathetic phone system - nobody could make a call if someone else was on the phone. They should have asked Mr. McBeevee to do something about that.

In the third season of Mayberry RFD the station moved right into the center of town. Goober discovers bones while digging an oil pit and Howard suspects they're dinosaur bones. A war of words ensues because Howard wants to do more digging, which would affect Goober's business.
In that season Mayberry looked drastically different since MRFD moved to yet another production studio.

I haven't seen any episodes of Mayberry RFD since first run, over fifty years ago... sure would love to catch episodes like this one one of these days.

I just watched this one last night and it really is stunning... there must have been a short cut through the back yards or something.

Yes, and the other side of town quickly becomes undeveloped "outskirts," as. seen in the episode where Barney stepped out of the "Snack Bar" and saw the two produce peddlers who gave him such a hard time.
I've been looking at photos of this area of Mayberry, which are helping my understanding of that part of town:
