I wish I could hve come up with a "Welcome Back Kotter" connection, too - funny they pick the same name for a black man in both shows so close together. But, it still wouldn't have explained Howard knowing him from the Army as well as this story (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11171955/1/Coming-Together).
Some of you might have seen it if you read fanfiction.net - it was in the Happy Days section for a couple weeks before being moved to the Hogan's Heroes section for a couple, then the crossovers. I hope I did a good enough job for not having watched the show in so long; though I did watch the episode beforehand.
And, the challenge is still up for someone to write a story and have General Hogan come to Milwaukee and recruit Chuck for the CIA.:)
(Edit to add: Or, maybe it's like the alternate history novel I wrote as a Print On Demand, "Not By Might, But By Right" - FDR doesn't run in '40, WIllkie wins, and there is some integration of the Army. Except after that the Presidents are different than mentioned on Happy Days. Anyway, check it out at Amazon or lulu.com if you want.)
