Do you prefer to watch Cheers on a local channel or Nick at Nite? There is a local channel in my area that airs Cheers and I am currently taping episodes. I want feedback. Thanks.

um local channel.. only because they dont skip around. .currently my local channel wb11 has it, and hasnt skipped over 1 episode since i started watching it, but it sucks only because its not remastered.. im kind of used to seeing a crisper clearer picture on nan.. oh and another thing about my local channel.. they dont have the dumb logo on the bottom right as a distraction.. it doesnt really bother me but has anyone noticed during this cheers run the nan logo alot got smaller?

I would have to say Nick at Nite because Cheers hasn't been on here locally since about 1997. I live in Portage, MI and back then Cheers was on WXMI FOX 17. Cheers was on FOX 17 for about 10 years. Then all of the sudden, they dropped Cheers and picked up MASH, which they still show. Later that year, FOX 17 also picked up Frasier. I thought then "yes! Now they have to bring back Cheers", but they didn't. So I went through a period of 4 years where I had to buy tapes or try to get the signals from out of town stations to see Cheers.

After going through all that, I love that Cheers is on N@N. But because of the episode skipping, I would still like it if Cheers was on one of the local stations here. There is still a good chance that could happen, in part because of something I read about in a newsgroup about Cheers in syndication. Apparently, stations now have a choice of two packages for Cheers. One is the old package, tapes with grainy pictures. The other is a package of remastered syndicated episodes the stations can get off of a satellite.

i like both. My local station only airs it as a time filler, like once a month, but the eps are fuller. on N@N, its every night lol

Nick at Nite has their own tapes of Cheers. The new syndication package, from what I read, is remastered versions of the syndicated episodes. The same cuts, except with better picture and sound quality. They also have the Paramount: A Viacom Company logo at the end.

Someone also wrote in that thread at alt.tv.frasier that WPIX was showing these episodes at 2:30 a.m. So WPIX can show these episodes. They don't now because they need the time slot for Ananda Lewis. I guess they also didn't want to make an abrupt switch from Rebecca/Woody episodes to Diane/Coach episodes.

OK...there are 3 "editions" of Cheers right now available to networks.

1) the original Syndicated package, with unremastered eps. its been around...ever since the show ended on NBC? anyway, its been around for awhile.

2) the Nick at Nite tapes. N@N actually paid $30 million-something for the first tapes of the newly(in August) remastered episodes of Cheers. these are their tapes to own, forever(i think). they dont get it by satellite

3) the new Syndicated package, with remastered eps. These, if not released yet, will b soon. these will b available by either satellite, or tapes.

N@N officially has rights to Cheers until 2008. At that time they can either renew the contract or let another station show it.

These eps have been being broadcast via satellite at a rate of 5 episodes a week since August. The expected end date is sometime later this year. They are now starting to also become available to locals on either special digital tape or regular tape. This package will soon replace the unremastered package, which will become completely unavailable and a thing of the past (except for the few unremastered eps that slip through {N@N showed one tonight})

some, i got from snowpeck(the poster b4 me). some if got from just thinking about it (obvious), and some from other online places (articles, etc)

coincidentally, me and Snowpeck were just talkin about this lol

i havent seen a remastered syndication ep. yet, but im guessing the themes are like the short ones Nick airs, with the recording in the regular tone (on nick, and originally NBC, its slightly lower)

Nick at nite does all of the cutting down themselves on the eps they air now
