First Look: "Absolutely Fabulous" Feature Film Starts Shooting

As Deadline previously reported, Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders are re-teaming for a big screen adaptation of their classic TV comedy "Absolutely Fabulous".

The BBC and Fox Searchlight, who are co-financing and distributing, have released a first look image, which shows the girls toasting to the good life in their iconic roles as Edina and Patsy. Set in the worlds of fashion and PR, the original TV series debuted in 1992 to immediate acclaim and high ratings, going on to run for a total of six seasons, spread out over two decades.





In the feature version, Edina and Patsy are still oozing glitz and glamour, living the high life they are accustomed to; shopping, drinking and clubbing their way around London’s trendiest hotspots.

Blamed for a major incident at an uber fashionable launch party, they become entangled in a media storm and are relentlessly pursued by the paparazzi. Fleeing penniless to the glamorous playground of the super-rich, the French Riviera, they hatch a plan to make their escape permanent and live the high life forevermore!





Mandie Fletcher directs from a script by Jennifer Saunders.

Jon Plowman and Damian Jones produce with Steve Milne, Christian Eisenbeiss, Christine Langan, Nichola Martin, Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French, and Maureen Vincent serving as executive producers.

DanTram Nguyen, Vice President of Production and Katie Goodson-Thomas, Director of Production will oversee the project for Fox Searchlight Pictures.

Chris Colfer Joins Absolutely Fabulous Movie

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie just got even more fabulous with the addition of Chris Colfer. The film announced on its Facebook page that the former "Glee" star has joined the cast of the British comedy.

"Look who’s found himself in the middle of an Ab Fab sandwich! We’re feeling totally gleeful as we welcome the wonderful Chris Colfer to the cast."



In speaking with Larry King on Friday, Colfer revealed his character is a “hairdresser-slash-social media consultant.” “Jennifer Saunders is one of my heroes,” Colfer said. “I can’t believe she wrote the part for me.”

Kim Kardashian is set to make a cameo in the film, which Colfer called the “Real Housewives before the Real Housewives.”







The sitcom — based on the British TV show of the same name — brings back Edina (Saunders) and Patsy (Joanna Lumley) as their glamorous lives are overcome with media backlash after getting blamed for an incident at a fashionable launch party.

Filming of the Mandie Fletcher-directed movie will take place in the U.K. and south of France, with plans for a 2016 release date.

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie Gets July Release Date

Edina and Patsy’s big screen debut has a new release date, darlings. Fox Searchlight has announced that Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie will open in select U.S. theaters on July 22.

Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley are set to reprise their roles from the hit British sitcom, which premiered in 1992 and ran for three seasons. A revival ran from 2001 to 2004, and several anniversary specials aired in 2011 and 2012.

Julia Sawalha, Jane Horrocks, and June Whitfield are also all returning as Saffy, Bubble, and Mother.



The film finds Edina and Patsy reeling from “a major incident at an uber fashionable launch party” and decamping to the French Riviera.

Mandie Fletcher is directing from Saunders’ screenplay, and the film is set to premiere in the U.K. on July 1.
