I was watching the Goldbergs last week and was surprised to see the father and his son watching an episode of Gimme a Break. They only showed it for a few seconds and the kid made a comment about how Nell probably gives great hugs then the mother comes into the room and turns the tv off so the kid and his father get upset.
The show is set in the 1980s with lots of references to mainstream pop culture from that era so it was nice to see a lesser known show like Gimme a Break being mentioned.

I would have to agree with the first poster there. According to my experiences, there are quite a few people around who have either never heard of it or who have no member of its existence. I have spoken with a bunch of people who have gotten it mixed up with such shows as "Facts of Life" and "Different Strokes".

A lesser known show? I don't think so. Wawwie, I'm with you on this one. Ha ha ha!

It is a lesser known show to me. I've never seen an episode in my entire life. I've never had cable and to my knowledge, it was only on TVOne briefly sometime in the past 2-3 years, but other than that, it hasn't been on television anywhere in years. Shows like Diff'rent Strokes and The Facts of Life are much better known and I've seen those many times.

I can tell you that growing up during the 1980s the show was very popular. It was a reference to one of the television shows as well. Very popular show courts time. It just recently finished running on TV one again. It also is here in New York in the surrounding area during the morning at 3 AM. It may not be as popular today but it sure was popular back in the day. And many many many people will remember the show.

So what. I've never in my life seen an episode of MASH, and we all know that MASH is one of the most well known shows of all time.

I was just surprised to see them watching/talking about Gimme a Break. It's probably the only time in the last 25-30 years the show has been referenced on another tv show.

I have cable and I haven't seen it on tv since the 1980's. If it weren't for the dvds that came out years ago, I'd have to settle for watching it on youtube. I don't know why it never did well in syndication, I always liked it better than those shows you mentioned.

The only recent reference I've seen is a negative one in the promos for the movie, "Welcome, Home Roscoe Jenkins." Mike Epps says "I thought Nell Carter was dead. Gimmie a Break!" after seeing Monique in the shower.
