View Full Version : I Miss Blockbuster Video
isiahthomas 10-10-2015, 02:57 PM I'm really sad that all the Blockbuster Video stores are gone because I miss going to the video store to browse the shelves to see what movies are out and read what they're about. There's a small video store I go to which is the only one left in my area but he also sells pornos hahahahahahahahahaha. Store owner who's a white man told me most of his customers rent pornos and he said I'm one of the few customers that rents movies. I know he wouldn't be in business if it wasn't for the pornos because people that love movies have gotten so lazy that they would rather watch movies online and buy movies online. That's why all the Blockbuster Video stores are gone and the small video stores are gone.
I also don't like these Redbox movie vending machines and they're everywhere. I see them when I go to 7 Eleven, CVS drug store and the grocery store. I've never gotten a movie from Redbox because they don't have a large selection of old movies and they only accept credit cards instead of cash. My brother told me him and his wife get movies from Redbox and he said I should get movies from them but I don't want to. The video store I go to, their new movies are only $3 and I'm going there today to rent some movies.
Tubehead 10-11-2015, 02:06 PM just do net flex you can down load movies if you get movies on dvd or blu ray you can keep them long time you don't have to worry bring them back in an week. i did like block buster i got some good deals on dvds and video games!! i liked movie gallery the best it was kind of like block buster they had good deals one time we rented four movies then the guy said we can get cheaper for pop corn coke & candy it was like $40 bucks it was like that for year!!
Torgo 10-11-2015, 02:28 PM Yep, I'm so lazy I work 40 hours a week and prefer the convenience of renting/buying online during the weekends.
Bonniegirl 10-11-2015, 06:59 PM I miss the old days of going to the shop and browsing around for movies to rent. Like going to the library!
dakert 10-12-2015, 12:32 PM I have fond memories of going to the Blockbuster in Macedonia OH but I don't miss it now. Its probably due to the fact that I don't watch many movies.
Penny Lane 10-12-2015, 02:53 PM I spent a lot of time in Blockbuster . I miss it too! :(
Bonniegirl 10-12-2015, 03:18 PM I spent a lot of time in Blockbuster . I miss it too! :(
I didn't really go to Blockbuster. I used to rent from little Mom and Pop movie rental places!! There used to be a lot of them out here. Seems they all pretty much are out of business now :(
isiahthomas 10-12-2015, 03:22 PM So do i Penny Lane. Bonniegirl, i used to go to small video stores. I used to go to a small video store in Alexandria, Virginia and the white woman who owned it is from Cleveland, Ohio. I told her i was from Cleveland and she told me the store was never gonna close because i had told her about Blockbuster Video stores closing. Next thing i know, i drove by there a week later and it was closed and i was mad because i loved that store. They had a large selection of old and new movies. The video store i go to now is small but the store also sells pornos hahahahahahahaha.

I really don't think there are any video stores around where I live at all anymore! The one I mainly went to closed down some time ago, and I haven't seen any of the others open in the longest time! :( The closest thing is the Red Box machines at the grocery stores. To me that's not the same or as much fun as browsing around a shop to find movies I want to rent !

I miss the Hollywood Video Rental store. We'd go in and browse the dvds and the video games and you could always find something you wanted to see. I didn't go to Blockbuster very often because there wasn't one on our side of town. You had to drive at least 8 or 9 miles to get to it. But their store was bigger than Hollywood Videos store.
Mr. Television 10-12-2015, 05:42 PM We had a blockbuster just down the street from where I live. It closed about 5 or 6 years ago. They demolished the building last summer.
MrCleveland 10-13-2015, 07:42 AM I've rarely go to Blockbuster Video. We would rent films at a mom-and-pop video store. We'd later rent video games there.
The only place I know that still does that is Discount Drug Mart.
BigManMike 10-18-2015, 09:51 PM I also miss Blockbuster. I used to rent movies from there all the time. I liked it better than redbox and even Netflix.
isiahthomas 10-23-2015, 04:35 PM Bonniegirl and Thebigcookie, I agree. I'm going to the video store next week because I haven't been in awhile.
isiahthomas 01-13-2016, 03:42 PM I'm lucky that there's one video store in my area that's in Clinton, Maryland and I'm glad they're still open because i love going there. I went there last month to rent a few movies and their movies only cost $3. They have a lot of old and new movies. One of the movies i got is called Heist with Robert Deniro, Morris Chestnut, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Gina Carano and Kate Bosworth. Gina and Kate are hot women and i like Robert and Morris. Robert doesn't seem to be retiring from acting anytime soon and he's old but he's aged well. He was in the new movie Joy with Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper which my mom saw last week. She said it was alright. Robert is also gonna be in Dirty Grandpa which comes out January 22nd and Zac Efron is also in it. I wanna see that. I also rented Vacation movie with Christina Applegate and Chevy Chase. Christina is still hot and Chevy has gotten fat LOL. Vacation was funny but Christina's husband was corny.
tlc38tlc38 01-13-2016, 11:17 PM We never had a Blockbuster in my area but we did have a couple local video stores. I do miss going and browsing and renting, then having to bring them back a couple days later. It was fun...I miss actually having to do stuff. Now, things are actually way too easy. You appreciated it more with having to do something to get it.

I agree!!! I like running around town doing errands ,including picking up movies!! And I liked browsing and actually picking the movie off the shelf and reading the cover to see what it was about. Like selecting a library book! ;)
OH Nuts! 01-14-2016, 12:06 AM I sort of miss the "good old days" of going to a video store to rent videos. But, there's always is the library. Since I live in a big city I'm lucky, as there always is a great selection at our main library.
Hawkee 06-09-2018, 04:00 AM The main reason why video stores are disappearing from cities is because since the tablet was invented people have been watching movies on their tablets rather than going to a video store and renting a movie for one night and then returning it the next day. Why Blockbuster Video went broke is because since other places are trying to replace the video store by inventing rental kiosks like Redbox as a way for people to rent movies easily without having to deal with overdue movies and late fees for returning movies. When my mom and I would rent movies we would rent them from CVS Pharmacy and we never had troubles with CVS when it came to returning movies. But Mom and I would rent movies from Blockbuster until they would bully us and accuse us of not returning movies on time and mainly we just went to Blockbuster to buy movies on clearance sales. But I have a feeling that Blockbuster Video will revive itself but this time selling movies for you to watch on your tablet on an app

Yes. I still like going to the library, too! I love the smell of the actual books, not a burning computer.
Regulus 06-09-2018, 08:27 AM On-line sites such as amazon.com and deep discount. com among others also contributed to the demise of video stores. Why travel to a brick and mortar store when you can purchase what you want to watch and it will arrive a few days later? And it's not just video stores, other stores such as Toys R Us have suffered declines so serious that they've also gone out of business. It's a bittersweet experience, but that's the way it's become. Times have changed, and so have we.
RetroGuy2000 06-09-2018, 12:33 PM I miss Hastings. They had DVDs for rent/sale, and also had books. The store in my city still did good business, as it was at the center of the community, and they had a very large selection of DVDs, CDs, and books, but when the chain closed, they shuttered all stores and liquidated everything.

I check out movies from the library, but the selection isn't great. Nothing too new. I love old movies, so I have found a few gems, but like I said selection isn't that great.! It's either hit or miss, sometimes you find stuff, sometimes not!
But than after all it's free, and it's fun to go to the library, so if I have the time and can't find a movie, I'll check out the books! ;)

Video stores declined even before that, I'd say it started around mid-2000s. The rise of online downloading (legal and illegal) and bootleg vendors did them in.

Actually, the switch from VHS to DVD did a lot of them in first.
Dude111 08-01-2018, 07:35 PM Theres still one in Oregon... They are privately owned and dont plan on closing......
AMackII 08-01-2018, 08:13 PM I remember seeing Blockbuster Video anywhere here in St Louis, The Best about it is picking out a video game so its rented for 3 days. I had good memories of going to Blockbuster Video.
Dude111 03-20-2026, 10:47 AM I have some VHS tapes that were rentals from BLOCKBUSTER.. I remove the stickers though when I get them... (If I can cleanly)
Dead2009 03-20-2026, 04:48 PM Hollywood Video > Blockbuster Video
TheLittleFaerie 03-20-2026, 11:15 PM We actually still have a video store in my town and it gets pretty good business I think
Dude111 03-20-2026, 11:39 PM Wow are you in oregon? (They were not planning on closing last I knew)
Hawkee 03-21-2026, 02:44 AM I could never figure out how Blockbuster Video survived in video store chains but I had three or four of them and my family used to enjoy renting movies from them. Until my family began having bad luck with Blockbuster Video and it all started when they accused Dad of not returning The Truman Show and they sent Dad a late fee notice when in reality Dad did return The Truman Show on time and Dad had to call Blockbuster Video and straighten it out and then when we would rent movies from Blockbuster Video they would accuse us of stuff that my family never even did such as returning movies late movies not being rewound to movies not even in the box or missing and when my family got tired of it we started renting movies from CVS and Hollywood Video. Now I think Blockbuster Video accusing people of not returning movies receiving late fees and movies not rewound or missing actually caused them to get in trouble and that's why they began having troubles with the chain and that's why I think got Blockbuster Video filing for bankruptcy. But before the troubles began Blockbuster Video was the king and they would offer deals when you would rent a new release with promotions such as "Get Free Popcorn with your rental of Austin Powers" or "Rent The Mask and get a dollar off your next rental" and the name Blockbuster alone became like a powerful kingdom because not only did they have video stores they even tried to compete with Wherehouse Music and Sam Goody by launching Blockbuster Music which also failed too. But what really caused the death of Blockbuster Video was streaming services like Netflix and they even bought Worldvision Productions before their demise. But when you had every store such as supermarkets and drug stores that rented movies too video store chains were hurt and that affected Blockbuster Video too

I'm in TN. I think it's called Video Check-out, a mom and pop store
Dude111 03-21-2026, 02:59 PM Wow next time you go in,tell them I said hello :)
There was a VHS rental store here in My area but the got sick (MS) and died last year....... Its very sad :(

That happened in later stage. But initially what caused demise of Blockbuster was when DVDs became widely available and sold at affordable price. People liked to own their movies as to watch it any time they want to-where renting mean you have time restriction to watch it and there is no ownership. So why rent a movie where for few dollars more you can buy and own it.

Uh huh . And nowadays they are trying to get rid of all the DVD'S, too much clutter. Movies are all Netflix and streaming now. Same with books, alot of people read books electronically , I think it's called kindle ?
Not me , I still like DVD's and books . But they really do take up space if you have alot of them.

Wow. That is so cool. I wish we had one where I live. I love to rent movies . :)

You are exactly right. I have closet full of DVDs and since upgraded to smart TV, haven't watch any DVDs for over two years and they are taking too much room. Used to have a store near by that used to buy and sell used DVDs, but they went out of business. So used DVDs have lost their value as a commodity.
Dude111 03-22-2026, 04:32 PM Try bringing them to Goodwill or Salvation army :)
