NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
Billy Joe Royal, a 1960s pop and 1990s country star, has died. He was 73.
Ronnie McDowell, Royal’s tour partner, said the singer died in his sleep on Tuesday at his North Carolina home.
Royal lived in Nashville for over 20 years after hitting the music scene in the 1960s in Georgia.
His hits included “Down in the Boondocks,” a top 10 hit in 1965, “Hush,” “Cherry Hill Park,” “Burn Like a Rocket,” and “I Knew You When.”
He was a favorite on the oldies circuit and was about to go back on tour in November with McDowell.
Funeral arrangements are pending.

How sad I like his music. Cherry Hill Park was banned from many stations because of its lyrics which were risque for its time.

Because of what was played in my presence when I was a kid, Billy Joe Royal is one of the many from back in the day that I am no stranger to.
God bless you and his family always!!!
