Some of it seems overblown. He just appears very tired and perhaps, just wasn't in the mood for 4-6 hours of joking around on another game show on a Saturday after hosting his own show all week.
He always seemed into the game and even still joked around. Although, I have to say that there were a few times that he even seemed to try to upsurp Gene Rayburn. But, nobody's perfect...

I don't know I've heard stories that he was quite arrogant and difficult to work with always wanting to upstage everyone else and be the center of attention. I was a still a kid when Match Game and the original version of Family Feud with him hosting were on TV. I couldn't see it then but being an adult now and watching reruns of those shows with him on them I think it's really obvious he thought he was above everybody else. Kind of sad and pathetic some people have to be such jerks.

Definitely overblown!! He was simply worn out and misunderstood.
