Nixon was the first president I really remember well! Being I was a baby when Kennedy was assassinated :( And than Johnson. I was a little girl. I really don't remember him much than, only to see him later in pictures and film footage I kind of very vaguely remember him only! So Richard Nixon was really the first one that I truly Knew who he was and understood exactly what a President was for! :)
I VIVIDLY remember like it was yesterday the Nixon/Humphrey election! ;)

I barely remember Nixon as President. I remember the next guy (Ford) much better.
Your President (JFK) was a hottie.... most handsome president ever IMO. My ex-husband was also born when Kennedy was president. My parents were in high school... I think they were both 17 when he was assassinated.

IllinoisTVFan 09-20-2015, 08:49 PM Nixon. My parents were born when Truman was in office. The first presidential race I remember was Reagan-Carter in 1980, I was in fourth grade when that happened and we talked about it in class. My classmates were mostly Reagan supporters but my parents disliked him so I did. My grandparents were Democrats but wanted Ted Kennedy instead of Carter.
Furienna 09-20-2015, 09:48 PM Ronald Reagan.

Harry S. Truman was RIGHT after Franklin D. Roosevelt (I think) ? If I'm remembering correctly my Mom was a teenager/ young 20's ? when Harry S. Truman was president ,and she (and most people her age ) thought he was really cool!;)
My Mom was more a history buff over my Dad so I got more of my Presidential knowledge from her ! And she is no longer with us! :(

LBJ was the one who signed Medicare into law in 1965 after Truman tried to and failed. And Harry Truman was the very first recipient of it, according to JEPORADY.

Roosevelt was the one who started social security and unemployment insurance. Back then, if someone lost their job, and they didn't have enough money saved up it was too bad and it was unheard of for married women to work. My fathers mother used to have a job back then, but she couldn't tell any of her friends.
And, his uncle lost his job and he & his wife were forced to move in with my fathers family.

Same here as far as remembering a president well -- Nixon was first elected when I was 3 (1968).
The first presidential election I can recall is 1972: Nixon vs. McGovern. I remember the guys at school talking about it as we all took a "whiz" in the boys' bathroom.
(There was a family down the block that had a McGovern bumper sticker on their Ford Pinto at that time. Since the street was being sealed, they drove that car right on the sidewalk!)

Babalu 01-06-2018, 03:44 AM This probably happened about 15 years ago. Someone I worked with took care of his two elderly aunts. One had to be taken to the hospital. One of the questions that doctors in hospitals often ask older patients when seeing them for the first time in an emergency room is who was president when you were born to see if they are lucid. When asked she replied, "McKinley". The doctors looked at each other and none of them had a clue so they had to get an encyclopedia.
