Sometimes a bad experience leads to something good, as John Stamos will tell you.
The Fuller House and Grandfathered star is putting a positive spin on his drunken driving arrest in June, which was followed by a month-long stay in rehab.

"I've had a rough year with my mom dying, so it all came to a head, and it was a turning point," said the 52-year-old, who was "brokenhearted" when Loretta Stamos passed a year ago, told Details. "You either continue on that path — and some of it's fun, but a lot of it's not — or there's this other thing, this golden opportunity sitting there with all this work and all this goodwill that you have going for you. That's the key."

Stamos, who's been a star since the early '80s, said having a lot of downtime between projects didn't help. But he's acting his age these days, he tells the mag.

"I'm trying. I swear to God I'm trying. It's not as much fun, but you have to be responsible. It's about discipline, which I lost for a while," he said. "Part of being undisciplined for the past five or six years is that I didn't work as much as it looked like. I had some high-profile jobs, like a Super Bowl commercial or a few episodes of Glee, but there was a lot of downtime, and that can be, obviously, dangerous."

Having too much time on his hands is no longer an issue for Stamos. His new Fox series, Grandfathered, premieres Sept. 29. His Full House revival is headed to Netflix in 2016.

"I can't wait to get to work in the morning. I haven't felt this in a long time," he told Entertainment Weekly via People magazine. "I feel better than I've felt in a decade. I hope people see that. That's what I want them to see."
