Has anyone ever compiled a list of all the episodes cut from the DVD sets?
I'm talking about the scenes where Jim Nabors sings because of music clearance issues. I tried doing a search, and found a few titles mentioned, but it would be nice if there was just one list for the whole series. I want to see how many episodes are cut out of the 150 total.

I don't have a list of what was cut from the episodes. The series has 150 episodes. Normal running time per episode is approx. 25:30. Take a look at the reviews for each season here at Sitcoms Online, and look at the episode run times that are listed. Any episode under 25:30 is likely to be edited. Just as a rough estimate, I would guess that the number of edited episodes on the DVD's is somewhere between 50 and 60. It's a travesty the shoddy treatment CBS gave to this series on DVD.

Yes, I guess I'll have to research it myself. Just thought I'd ask the experts first to see if such a list already exists.

I'd guess 5 to 10 episodes at most. I may be wrong. It's a great show and well worth having at the low price they're now getting for the complete set.

50 is a conservative estimate, the number might even be a little higher than that. But 50 is reasonably close. Some episodes were edited more heavily than others. Some episodes are slightly edited, about 30 seconds or so, but an edit is still an edit. If a few words to a song was sung, it got removed. CBS really put the hack job on this series, it's the worst DVD treatment I've ever seen for a classic TV show.

In the 2nd season episode, Little Girl Blue, the scene where Gomer plays the phonograph record for the girl, when the music starts it's not the same music that was originally in the episode. CBS replaced it with something else, it sounds wrong and totally out of place. And one of the tunes Gomer sings in this episode was cut completely.

If I wasn't a big fan of the show, I would have saved my money and not purchased this junk.

Well, I agree about that one. I'd just watched that too and the replaced music is jarringly out of place. No music would have been much better. They did the same in an episode where Gomer, Duke, and Frankie go to a nightclub and it's terrible music. I'm not defending any cuts or replacing of the music and it's a reason I've haven't bought the recent complete set of The Fugitive. But I just don't think there are that many on this set, although it's still annoying. I found a site that mentioned 5 episodes in season 2 being cut, but the other seasons mention one or none. I think when the running times are 24:30 and above there probably aren't any edits. The run times aren't going to match up exactly and if there were syndication cuts they would run about 22:00. I watched almost all these dvd episodes (I probably skipped over that LGB episode because I don't much like it) and didn't notice more than about 10 being cut and I've been watching the show since it was first run.

Whatever, I'm glad you like the show too. I doubt it will ever be on Blu-Ray or otherwise have the cuts restored. So it's well worth $40 for five seasons of a great show. A few years ago I got season one as a gift when it cost $30.

Season 4 is the worst regarding edited episodes, about half of them are edited.

TV shows from the 60's generally have very consistent run times. Of course, there sometimes can be exceptions. The full uncut run time for Gomer Pyle episodes is about 25:30. I count about 50 that are in the 25:00 range and lower. A handful more fall in between 25:10 and 25:30. While it's possible an episode running 24:30 is still uncut, I suspect that isn't the case. I'm going with the belief that any episode under 25:30 is edited.

CBS messed up the 5th season DVD by cramming the 30 episodes on to 4 discs, instead of 5 discs like the other 4 seasons. Would they have gone broke if they had made it a 5 disc set to match the other seasons? :rolleyes:

But yea, I still enjoy the show and watch the DVD's, in spite of all the problems.

Gomer is on METV early Sunday mornings, so if you want to hear the songs, you could watch those episodes, I guess.

Why are they cutting the music from these scenes? Lack of rights or similar issues?

Okay, and I take it that some singing scenes are cut, but not all?

Does anyone know if the scene where Gomer sings the Bob Dylan song "Blowin' In The Wind" to the hippies is still intact?

It is the problem with many of these DVD releases: music clearances. A friend of mine bought the first couple of seasons of "Happy Days" and was upset over the amount of edited music, or music cut all together. Vicki Lawrence said one of the reasons why it has taken so long to release "lost" episodes of "The Carol Burnett Show" was also over the music. It is apparently less expensive (and much less of a hassle) to simply edit the music out, otherwise the cost of some of these DVD releases would be more than consumers are willing to pay.
