I've been rewatching some I Love Lucy episodes on Hulu and have noticed that the Ricardos redecorated their apartment several times. The first time being in their first apartment in Season 2, the second time being in their new apartment (just a few episodes later), the third time being when they redecorated the Mertz's apartment in Season 3, gave the Mertz's their old furniture and got new for themselves and finally when they moved into their house in the country in Season 5. I wonder why they redecorated so many times?

What I noticed was in the first apartment the piano was usually on the right wall from the front door (as it was in the second apartment when there was a window there). And the desk was on the left side of the room. In a few of the eps. from the first apartment the desk was on the right and the piano on the left!

Yeah, after they redecorated their first apartment, the desk was moved to the wall next to the front door and the piano was moved under the pass through to the kitchen.

I thought the piano was always better on the right side, but it worked well the other way around in one of the eps ! The one where the Ricardo's and Mertz's were singing and playing the piano and they were saying how they all loved each other and couldn't ask for better friends and neighbors! :) Than it got late and the Mertz's went home and were trying to sleep, and the Ricardo's stayed up and were still singing and playing the piano, too much noise for the Mertz's! And from there is escalated into a big fight! :(
If the piano was on the right side against the wall it wouldn't have had the same impact in this episode! Because it showed all of them standing around the piano singing, if the piano was against the wall we would just see their backs! ;) But other than that ep. I can't think of another that it was better having the piano on the left?

Yeah, it was definitely better to have the piano facing the audience when they had the sing-a-longs.

It's interesting how many times the Ricardo apartment was redecorated considering Rickey's numerous claims that they couldn't afford it!

I think you answered your own question. When you move into a new home, you need to have furniture that looks good in the new setting. When my family moved into our new home when I was a kid, one of the first things my mother did was buy all new furniture. The move into a new home would explain the second redecorating episode from S2, and the one in S6. The first on in S1, when they were still in their original apartment, they had been living there for ten or eleven years. Naturally, Lucy grew tired of the furniture. So the premise of all those episodes seems plausible to me. The only one I can't explain logically is the S3 episode when they redecorated the Mertzes apartment -- why Lucy felt like she needed a new couch to replace another still-new couch (which was Ricky's main objection: the existing furniture was basically brand new). But Lucy, by her own nature, wasn't always logical.

Which is exactly the point behind those episodes. Ricky said he couldn't afford to redecorate, but Lucy did it anyway. That conflict was the core of the comedy in these episodes.

I loved all those episodes where Lucy got new furniture. It wasn't a boring scheme for her to pull as it was done differently each time.
