I am still surprised the lady played his wife thought she was going to get a bigger role-lol The show was about Mr. Kotter at the school not his home life

On the season 1 DVD the have some of the screen tests of the actor. Robert Hegyes did indeed audition for the role of Vinnie Barbarino. But after watching the other auditions he conceeded that John Travolta was more suited to the role and happily accepted the part of Juan Epstein instead.

I was recently watching the screen test that John Travlota did for Welcome Back, Kotter, and it looks as though they shot it on the Squad Room set from Barney Miller.
