View Full Version : Sitcoms that have stopped in syndication

I mainly am thinking myself about Home Improvement. The series was having those court battles over syndication profits or something so does anyone know when the last time it aired was?

But to keep the topic more open, what other popular sitcoms haven't had reruns broadcast in over 2 years or more?

I'd like to see all these come back on a station I actually get:

Alice
Dave's World
The Drew Carey Show
Green Acres
Kate & Allie
Major Dad
Newhart
Perfect Strangers
Step by Step
Petticoat Junction
The Beverly Hillbillies

"Kate & Allie" has been fully released on DVD but it'd still be nice to see it back on TV again.

I guess that's the key part , because some of those are airing, like NEWHART and GREEN ACRES I know for sure are.

The Nanny currently airs on TVLand (and also aired on Antenna TV last year).
Family Matters currently airs on Centric.
Mama's Family begins airing on MeTV in January, but has not been on the air the past several years.
Thanks.

The Nanny aired more recently than I thought. Cool to see MeTV get Mama's Family. Wonder if it's taking Carol Burnett and Friends' timeslot for a while?

The big ones I can think of that haven't aired anywhere in a while would be:

Someone mentioned Step By Step...that was actually on the
The Hub not terribly long ago then pulled when they totally reworked that network. Before that though it hadn't been seen for quite a while anywhere-cable or syndication.

Family Matters was on Nick At Nite not too many years ago too. They had a habit of airing it in the middle of the night though so even if you wanted to watch it the time slots really weren't ideal.

Perfect Strangers really hasn't been aired anywhere in many years now. A good chunk of it was up briefly during the AOL In2TV stint several years ago along with a LOT of Warner's sitcom stuff. I mean a LOT. That even included some of their more obscure 1, 2 season only sitcoms that haven't been seen since their original airings.

Coach...yeah that one has legitimately not been on cable or regular tv syndication in some time. It is on Netflix in its entirety though for the time being. With the sequel series set to start in January I'm surprised no one is running it though so people can catch up with it.

The big kahuna though that hasn't been seen even here in Chicago in an extremely long time in syndication...that award would go to Head Of The Class. The most recent airings of it here were back in '97 or '98. So it hasn't been on anywhere period I can think of in damn near 20 years! Along with Perfect Strangers that was on AOL in2tv too. Like 75 percent of the series was up on there! Aside from that one exception it's almost all but disappeared.

I have very high hopes all the Warner stuff will finally land on iTunes in full over the next year though. Just since May alone they've thrown up all of Family Matters and Growing Pains-complete and digitally remastered!! I doubt they're done yet either. Almost ALL their stuff has been pulled from YouTube very very fast after the few brave ones have tried to upload it this year. That tells me they're trying to digitally remaster the rest of these long requested shows. The next 3 Warner shows I suspect are coming to iTunes over the next year would be Perfect Strangers-rumblings are they're in the process of finally digitally remastering it and clearing music rights now. After that will probably be Step by Step. Then finally Head Of The Class. I suspect The Steve Harvey Show will land there too. After that will probably be the rest of their one to two season obscurities. It's just the highly begged for shows they're trying to deal with first it looks like. So, I'm much more confident and optimistic where Warner is concerned. About Warner. That's scary. I wouldn't have said that even 6 months ago. I tell them repeatedly they've got my money as this stuff finally gets released full and complete. I guess many others are telling them that too! Seems they're finally listening.

Coach airs every Saturday morning in my area, at 11:00 a.m. eastern (also sometimes at 11:30 too) on the local My Network TV station. They just showed the Frank & Kathie Lee Gifford episode this past weekend.

Seems like HBO shows don't do well in broadcast syndication, probably because they edit out so much. They do a little better on cable, from what I've noticed. It reminds me of that MadTV sketch about The Sopranos airing on PAX.

Anyway...any of the HBO sitcoms that aired in syndication (Entourage, SATC, Curb Your Enthusiasm aired after midnight in my city, and didn't last longer than a couple of years.

One show I haven't seen in over 20 years in syndication would be Brothers. This was one of the first cable shows and for its time was known but last station that I'm aware ran it was a local station around 1993.

@Biff Bronson and Tlc38Tlc38- you're both really lucky to have local stations still airing Coach! Though I do have Netflix, my home connection is really awful at the moment so the only place I can really watch anything Netflix would be on my brother or sisters FIOS connections. I'm doing the best I can to get through the back half of that series that way since I didn't see too much of the last few seasons. It'd help a lot more if one of the Chicago channels were still airing it in syndication! The biggest help though is if Universal would complete it on DVD. I don't see that happening though so Netflix it is I guess.

I do apologize for the omission of Perfect Strangers having aired on Ion very briefly! I had forgotten it was on there until I read that post saying it was! It was so briefly most don't remember it having been on that network. I should have double checked on that before I posted that.

Sitcom or otherwise I don't think it's worth it to try putting any of it on regular broadcast TV in reruns. Their shows are very adult oriented so it's like they'd have to edit out so much of their shows for regular tv about all they'd be left with they could show are the title sequences. Even then that would depend on the content in those opening sequences.

I just finished Boardwalk Empire this week. Outstanding very under rated show but it's very gory, intense, and it's got a lot of very strong language. A show like that....yeah it would need to be edited so heavily for broadcast TV it's not really worth the time. I'm interested in seeing The Wire, Carnivale and Deadwood but as a few more examples those would have to be heavily edited to air too. From what I've seen of Game Of Thrones again it's great but I'm not sure even that would fly on broadcast TV. Just an interesting observation about HBO I wanted to note.

I haven't seen the late episodes of Coach, set in Florida, in many years. I think they had Tim Conway playing Hayden & Christine's wacky gardener in the "Orlando Breakers" storyline. I believe they based the Breakers owner on the lady who owned the St. Louis Rams of the NFL. (There are still a few later eps I've never seen because I was working nights when they first aired in prime time.) My Network TV had been showing episodes from around Season 4 give-or-take, so none from the much later years.

Some of the more important ones they've aired have included Christine falling through the railing and landing on the wedding cake, Kelly being dumped by Stuart, and Hayden almost being offered an NFL job (several seasons prior to his actually going to the pros).

Such a long-running series -- it will work very well in syndication because of the long time needed to cycle through it all.

The Florida seasons are the ones I haven't really seen either. Have seen bits and pieces here and there. I have seen the Series Finalle ironically enough so I do know how it ends. Any long running shoe like this is great for syndication I agree. It can take several months to fully cycle through so you almost always have an audience. The shorter the run the less ideal for syndication it is. That's probably why 88 episodes is considered the minimum needed for syndication. Ideally the shows with 200 plus episodes work best.

The one thing that is becoming a new platform for syndication, and it may be the way for shows like Desperate Housewives or Babylon Five, is On Demand through Hulu and Netflix. On Demand TV has potential for being more profitable than local syndication. It has the additional benefit of being low cost, and so not dependent on a certain number of episodes or attracting a large number of affiliated stations.
