Subway Cuts Ties with Longtime Pitchman as Plea Deal in Child Porn Case Nears

Things are getting worse for the man who once stood as a symbol of do-it-yourself dieting and the face of one of the most successful fast food companies in the world.

Following widespread news first reported by local Indianapolis station Fox 59 that Jared Fogle will plead guilty to charges of possessing child pornography, Subway has severed all ties with former pitchman.



The company issued a terse statement confirming this development this afternoon on Twitter:

"We no longer have a relationship with Jared and have no further comment."







The news caps off a terrible month for the Fogle that began in July, when the FBI raided the corporate mascot’s home and seized several of his computers. That raid stemmed from the May 4 arrest of Russell Taylor, former executive director of Fogle’s children’s health charity, on child pornography charges. Taylor was formally charged July 6.

At the time Fogle’s house was raided, Subway temporarily suspended its relationship with him, saying in a statement that “we are shocked about the news and believe it is related to a prior investigation of a former Jared Foundation employee… We are very concerned and will be monitoring the situation closely. We don’t have any more details at this point.”







Fogle first gained widespread fame in 2000, after news of his so-called “Subway diet” led the company to hire him as a spokesman for its lower-calorie offerings.

Though his presence in Subway advertising declined in 2008 following the introduction of the $5 Footlong campaign, he continued to make occasional appearances in commercials, and in public for the chain.

During his tenure, Fogle became a pop culture touchstone, with references in shows like Comedy Central’s "South Park" and Fox’s "American Dad!", and even a cameo on an episode of NBC’s "Community".

UPDATE with charges, details of pending plea deal:

Former Subway pitchman Jared Fogle was formally charged this morning in Indianapolis with multiple counts including engaging in sex with minors and possessing explicit images.

He’ll be required to pay restitution of $1.4 million, or $100,000 per victim, and may face up to 20 years in prison. He has reportedly worked out a deal that will see him serve 12 years, and has notified the court of his intent to plead guilty today.

What a sicko. Here's a guy who had everything going for him, but his perverse desires were too strong. They'll have a field day with him in prison.

I always thought Jared looked too geeky--and what I want to know is, how does anyone REALLY drop all that weight by eating sandwiches with a lot of bread? One of the first things fitness told me five years ago when I went on a plan to drop weight and work out was to drop bread from my diet and stick with vegetables. Of course, we can't entirely get away from bread, but I've very significantly cut down on it. Most of my grain intake comes from a bowl of old-fashioned oatmeal in the morning.

Every once in a while, I will buy a flatbread sandwich from Subway, though. Lots of vegetables and beef or chicken.

I certainly hope that Subway can recover its image and reputation from this pathetic, sordid debacle.

I wouldn't boycott Subway for what hardly anyone knew until recently. I'll buy their subs, but I would like to see what they would do to replenish their business.

Boycotting Subway is ridiculous. Anyone who has read the story knows that Subway found about his crimes after the fact. They cut ties with Jared asap. Those who are boycotting the store now probably rarely ate there in the first place, if at all.

A former franchisee claims executives in Subway's advertising unit knew about their famous spokesman's interest in sex with children going as far back as 2008.

Cindy Mills, who ran a Subway restaurant franchise in Pensacola, Fla., said she started reaching out to Subway executives about Jared Fogle's interest in children after he spoke openly about it with her.

In total, Mills talked to three executives with Subway's advertising unit, known as the Subway Franchisee Advertising Fund Trust (SFTAT), she told Business Insider in an interview that included her lawyer, Robert Beasley. SFAFT pools and manages advertising funds for the restaurant chain's franchisees.

Fogle, who has been Subway's most recognized spokesman for 15 years, has admitted to child pornography and traveling to have sex with minors, according to prosecutors in Indiana, where Fogle lives. Fogle, famous for losing about 245 pounds on a diet of Subway sandwiches in college, is expected to plead guilty to the allegations at a later date.

Subway has said it has cut off all ties with its former pitchman in light of his arrest and expected guilty plea. But Mill's allegations, which emerged Thursday, threaten to muddy the restaurant chain as well.

Kevin Kane, a spokesman for Subway, didn't immediately return a request for comment.

Mills said she met Fogle at a Subway event and had an affair with him, according to BI's report. During that time, Fogle told her he'd had sex with prostitutes between the ages of 9 and 16 years old in Thailand and the US, she said. He also asked her to set up a meeting for him with Mills' cousin, who was underage at the time, she told BI.

Mills lawyer didn't immediately return a request for an interview.

Their relationship fell apart after Fogle allegedly pressured Mills to sell herself for on Craigslist, she said.

Thereafter, Mills told Jeff Moody, head of SFAFT, about Jared's disturbing behavior in a phone call, she said. She also shared her concerns with two other SFAFT executives at a Subway-sponsored NASCAR event in Phoenix, she said.

She said she did not go to the police because she was afraid of Jared's money and power.

Fogle's arrest comes as Subway struggles to fight off growing competition from restaurant chains like Chik-Fil-A and Chipotle.

Subway was founded on this day 50 years ago. On Thursday, Subway marked the birthday with a "small celebration" at their Milford, Conn., headquarters, the company said on Thursday.

So what is the solution for this new revelation? Boycott Subway until they go out of business for not doing a thing, despite knowing everything about it?

The Subway sandwich chain’s ex-pitchman, Jared Fogle, was slammed with a ​​15-year, 8-month sentence on child porn charges Thursday, after a hearing in which his shrinks blamed his more than 200-pound weight loss for turning him “hyper-sexual.”



Subway’s turkey footlongs made him a sex-crazed pedophile, Fogle had claimed in a last-ditch try for leniency.

Fogle “traded a horrible food addiction for a horrible sex addiction,” defense lawyer Jeremy Margolis had argued at sentencing.







Fogle himself spoke during the sentencing hearing, drawing two deep breaths and then telling the judge, “for most of my adult life, I’ve been in the spotlight, trying to be a role model.”

Then, “I became dependent on alcohol, pornography and prostitutes,” he claimed, in what was his first public statement on the lurid case.

“Not a day will go by when I don’t think about what I did. Members of my family are also victims of my acts,” he told the judge, noting that his wife, the mother of his two young children, will now be a single mother.

“You gave your wife $7 million,” US District Judge Tanya Walton Pratt snapped back. “She’ll be okay.”







Fogle had been obese due to a life-long compulsive eating disorder, but once he lost ​245 pounds on a strict ​diet of ​Subway ​turkey and veggie heroes, his obsessive disorder transferred to sex, his shrink told the judge on Fogle’s behalf at Thursday’s hearing, held in federal court in Indianapolis.

“Once he lost weight, it seemed as though in a short time he had hyper-sexuality,” and began fantasizing about prepubescent girls and boys, and seeking out 16​-​ and 17-year-old prostitutes, forensic psychiatrist John Bradford told the judge.

“There are brain disorders that can be associated with sexual drive,” insisted the shrink, one in a team of mental health experts who argued that Fogle suffers from, “hyper-sexuality mild pedophilia, and alcohol issues, and so needs medical treatment, not prison.”

“I believe he did suffer from pedophilia, except it didn’t involve acting out with a child. He denies he ever touched a child,” Bradford testified, adding that Fogle spent a minimum of $12,000 a year on prostitutes.

Even his own lawyers called Fogle “pathetic.” “Nobody wants to be Jared Fogle,” defense lawyer Andrew Richard DeVooght conceded.







Prosecutors in turn regaled the judge with details of Fogle’s sickening kiddie porn perversions.

“I’ll pay you big for a 14- or 15-year-old,” Fogle had texted an 18-year-old prostitute from Las Vegas, after paying her for sex, a detective told the judge Thursday.



The pornography viewed by Fogle included images of children as young as 6, the prosecution has said. Fogle, 38, is the father of two children under the age of 5. Prosecutors have said there is no evidence he abused his own kids.

Fogle possessed over 600 photos and videos of child porn, much of it provided for him by co-defendant Russell Taylor, former head of Fogle’s foundation. Taylor, who cooperated in the investigation and has yet to be sentenced, would tape his young family members and their friends for Fogle, prosecutors have said.







Fogle had pleaded guilty earlier Thursday to one count each of traveling to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor and distribution and receipt of child pornography. He has also paid his 14 victims $100,000 each in restitution.

Prosecutors had asked for a 12½-year sentence. Fogle’s attorneys asked for the mandatory minimum sentence of five years.

Fogle has already served three months’ home confinement, which will count toward his prison time.

No. Never heard of them until you mentioned them. I looked them up, and there is a store across the river from me in Hoboken. I'll check them out soon. The one sub store I really liked was Blimpies. To be honest Subway's
sandwiches always tasted a little weird to me.

I like Subway subs. Although I do wonder how they are doing for I get once a month, coupons with "buy one 6 inch sub for $3.00". "Buy one sub and a drink and get another 6 inch free" "Buy 3 foot long sub for $15.00" . The one we have is near a train station and somewhat small, 6 tables and what few times I am there, the staff treats me well. After a while, no one will remember Jared being a spokeman.

I shake my head at people who seem to be having a secure life and goof it up by doing something foolish or criminal . Some one mentioned a brain disorder. We probably all have a disorder some degree, by that some of us are shy, too outspoken, drink too much, or have a cluttered house. But many times you read people who must have really a few big dents in their heads. Jared is one them.
