Alfred Lutter was Tommy in the movie so he was cast in the TV series. But by the time they got around to filming the first official episode he had a growth spurt and the producers felt he "looked more Linda Lavin's lover than her son" thus they recast the part with Philip, who actually bore a stronger resemblance to Polly Holliday than to Lavin.

Tommy (Philip McKeon) did look more like he could be Flo's son than Alice's! ;) I never really thought about that before , but you are right! ;)
