I own a DVD set of all the Ed Sullivan Shows that the Beatles appeared on. Cilla Black appeared and sang in one of those episodes. So sorry to hear this news. May she rest in peace.

Cilla Black, who was a protege of The Beatles, was a part of the British Invasion of 1964. I had her 45 record "You're My World". I loved that song! May Cilla rest in peace. :(

This is how I remember her.

Spectacular! :)

Cilla Black recorded many songs from different writers, and she covered a few songs from her friends the Beatles, but she also recorded three Lennon-McCartney songs the Beatles gave to her and never taped themselves. Here she is signing one of them, with the authors. :)

Was Cilla Black the original singer of the song Alfie? Because I read in my liner notes of my Dionne Warwick CD that Cilla Black sang Alfie before Dionne Warwick and Cher sang it. I didn't know much about Cilla Black until I read about her. And now that she is gone I might check out some of her songs because I love oldies music a lot,
Thanks for telling me about Cilla Black

I don't know who recorded "Alfie" first, thought they both recorded the same Bacharach-David tunes on occasion. Dionne Warwick's versions (and Aretha Franklin's covers) of those songs may have been part of the reason why Cilla Black never made it in America, though Brian Epstein certainly tried to make her a star. Mostly, though, she couldn't be bothered to travel to the U.S. too much and preferred to be what we Americans call a big fish in a small pond.
