It's California near the beach. Someone probably WOULD have paid what he was planning to ask for.

As little as they went to the beach, (which was never) you'd never know they lived next to a beach at all.

Seems like a lot, but when my landlord raises my rent every five or so years, he raises it $50 at a time.

yeah that's better because it averages out to $10 a year. Plus during that time you could get a COLA raise or a higher paying jobs
