William Shatner took issue with GOP Senator Ted Cruz for a statement made to The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2015/07/26/magazine/ted-cruz-is-more-of-a-spider-man-guy.html?_r=2). Cruz weighed in on the classic “who’s better?” debate between Star Trek Captains James T. Kirk and Jean-Luc Picard. Cruz is clearly a Kirk fan, but not for the reason one would expect:

“Kirk is working class; Picard is an aristocrat. Kirk is a passionate fighter for justice; Picard is a cerebral philosopher. I think it is quite likely that Kirk is a Republican and Picard is a Democrat.”

Yep, Cruz dropped some class warfare into the discussion. Sir Patrick Stewart hasn’t expressed his feelings on Cruz’s analysis, but Shatner expressed his displeasure on Twitter:

Star Trek wasn't political. I'm not political; I can't even vote in the US. So to put a geocentric label on interstellar characters is silly

Star Trek was very political. Gene Roddenberry was often promoting his liberal causes in Star Trek and years later was happy to talk about it. He said that his proudest achievement on Star Trek was TV's first interracial kiss, even though most Star Trek fans think that's not even worth mentioning.

Most shows in the 1960's weren't political.
