View Full Version : This show wasn't that great
Wawwie 07-25-2015, 03:47 PM When I was a kid, I remember really liking this show for some reason. But now that I am an adult, I have to say that this show was not that great. It's hardly ever really funny and the dialogue is often corny with sloppy writing. Ann's acting is so over-the-top, Schneider is super annoying, Alex was a waste of time, Barbara is too goody-goody and judgmental, Julie was written as a dead-beat toward the end, and Grandma Romano..... that is one ANNOYING lady! What did I ever see in this show? Julie was the only one who could actually act very well, but Mackenzie Phillips was unfortunately wasted. And the last season...... P U.... STINKS!!!

Oh wow, now see, I like it better now than I did than!!;) I only watched it for two or so seasons, than lost interest and/or had something else to do or watch or whatever. Back than I didn't think it was that funny cause it wasn't ROTFL funny! I "get it" now more as an older adult than when I was a teenager or young adult ! Some eps are duds but for the most part I am entertained! ;)
I been really into it, and I must say I LOVE this show, and can't really explain why? It's still not where ya want to roll on the floor and laugh, but it has it's funny moments and it's like Family! I can't explain exactly what I mean, but it is like they are my family or something! ;) I really get into the lives of Barbara, Julie, Ann, Grandma , the husbands. Almost all of them I like! :) I could do without Alex, and Schneider well he is like an annoying relative or family friend that you had for years and you gotta love em type of thing if that makes sense? He did look out for Ann and the girls! He was flirty with Ann at first, but come on drama queen Ann enjoyed his attention I think more than she let on!:D Than he acted like a big brother to her, and he always was respectful of the girls and was like a Father figure! :)
I really loved when Julie and Barbara got husbands! :) Mark and Max brought a lot to the show! It was a shame what ended up happening with Julie leaving! :( We are all still figuring out a better scenario of what could have happened! But anyway! I just love this show and I'm gonna tear up and be emotional on the last ep I know! :( Than I will take a long nap and re watch them again!
I guess to sum it up it is more soap opera-ish to me than a comedy that is very unique! ;) And of course. I just LOVE Max!!!:) Found me a new crush, and lots of the boys Julie and Barbara had in their lives were hotties too! And Handsome Dad Ed and Bob, dear sweet Bob who just loved his Barbara!!!! :)
Wawwie 07-25-2015, 10:45 PM I can't explain exactly what I mean, but it is like they are my family or something! ;)
That's how I feel about the show "Golden Girls."
So comforting and homey.
visaman666 07-25-2015, 11:06 PM The only one I didn't care for was Max, he had to be gay, I was just a teen when the show was on, but even I could see that Max was gay. Why would Julie go for someone like that? She would be better off with a rocker ;)

I understand what you're saying. I think Bonnie Franklin did fine playing Ann. The problem, I believe, is how the character was written. She was almost always angry about something, which can get tiring. I was not much of a fan when the show originally aired, but I watched the first few seasons because my mother was into it, and she was in charge of the television set in the evenings. Seeing this show now, it seems like just a product of its time. I still can't into it, and rarely laugh. Usually, I change the channel.
There are no strong, enduring characters like Archie Bunker or Maude or Fred Sanford from other Normal Lear shows that would give the show longevity. It just seems like a generic 70s show that was riding the wave of popularity at the time for this genre of sitcom, but without the anchor of a really strong central character. Which I guess is why it's mostly been lost in time.
Bonniegirl 07-26-2015, 12:56 AM The only one I didn't care for was Max, he had to be gay, I was just a teen when the show was on, but even I could see that Max was gay. Why would Julie go for someone like that? She would be better off with a rocker ;)
NO! NO! NO!!!! He is FAR from gay! Max/ Michael Lembeck is not gay! I can assure you of that! He has three children with two different wives!! (look up his bio or on Wikipedia)! ;)
And as a woman, believe me, I am VERY SURE he Isn't gay! I have no gay vibe at all from him! ;)
billybatts 07-26-2015, 01:29 AM No Max wasn't gay but Alex is.
I agree that the show was not great but it was enjoyable with the exception of the final season.
Ann was never happy, and i noticed that when Ann wasn't in and episode then the made dear sweet Barbara the angry one.
That is what made the final season so annoying.

Here is Michael Lembeck's 2nd wife (they are still married, too) that he had two kids with! Actress Lorna Patterson

And a more recent picture of her. Nope. I'd say Michael isn't gay!! Very cool he likes blondes, I'm blonde too!!! ;)

I admit I don't know much about this person, but having multiple wives w/ kids doesn't mean someone isn't gay.
Wawwie 07-26-2015, 04:58 PM I admit I don't know much about this person, but having multiple wives w/ kids doesn't mean someone isn't gay.
^^^ That's true. A neighbor of mine was married to a woman for about twenty years and had three sons with her. The whole time, he was leading a secret gay life. He eventually came out of the closet and left his wife for his male partner.
As for Max, I never got the impression that he is gay. I don't know why that particular poster thinks he's gay. He didn't give a reason. So I'll agree with Bonnie. Max (Michael Lembeck) is a heterosexual as far as anyone knows.

Yes! I know that. Men can have wives and be closet gay or bisexual! But I still think Michael isn't! And I have more important things to worry about than a 67 year old man who I liked from a show 31 years ago is gay or not! So hopefully this subject can drop! :(

Max was such a major HUNK, and he aged very, very well. He is a very attractive man IMO.

In one hour and a half, the first ep. of ODAAT is a MUST SEE ep.;) Max is going to make a pass at Barbara!!! :eek: OMG!!! I posted about this before and asked posters who have seen this ep. to PLEASE NOT tell me what is going to happen! But that is what the ep is about. Max and Barbara are going to have some type of attraction , and I'm thinking it will be him coming on to her!!!! I can't WAIT to see this ep.!!!!! ;

Sometimes it's just jealousy. If women are fawning over a certain other guy, a jealous guy will say, "Oh, that guy's gay." The same guys get offended when a certain female doesn't respond to their advances. He'll just say, "Oh, she must be a lesbian." For the record, I doubt that Michael Lembeck is gay.
This topic took a weird turn.

I'm glad I got to see for myself because it's one of the worst shows of the 70's LOL
There was nothing funny about it and the cast was just awful
Ann......not funny and over dramatic
Julie.......over dramatic
Barbara.......Not funny but HOT
Schneider.....not funny and a weirdo
Alex..........young weirdo
Mark...........Coffee Table with eyes
Grandmom Romano.......Annoying
Max........He was just there
So this is one show that will never ever appear on my TV screen now that the cycle is over after Monday.

Wawwie 07-26-2015, 09:32 PM What the hell was Norman Lear thinking? Ann sure as hell was no Archie Bunker, Maude, Fred Sanford or George Jefferson. Those are iconic characters who stand the test of time. Ann Romano... not so much!

it's a reason I prefer Mr. Bentley over Schneider:lol:

At least Mr. Bentley would RING THE DOORBELL instead of just barging in like Schneider. Schneider was an annoying clown!

Yes, that is very true. Bentley had a lot of lady friends. He also had a very good paying job. Bentley was not pathetic like Schneider.

I like Phyllis, and "Mother Dexter's Wedding" is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

Why is that episode so funny?
LittleRickyII 07-27-2015, 12:25 AM Why is that episode so funny?
Mostly because of Mother Dexter. There were so many things in that episode that were LOL funny.
TVFactFan 07-27-2015, 12:31 AM Mostly because of Mother Dexter. There were so many things in that episode that were LOL funny.
Did Mary and Rhoda guest star in that ep?
LittleRickyII 07-27-2015, 12:35 AM Not that he said he was gay, but kind of on the same line!! 1976- 1977 Peter Frampton album" Frampton comes alive" was so popular. At first the girls and guys liked him but than after awhile ALL the girls were crushing on Frampton and the guys decided he was a "weak musician"!!!
 Peter Frampton is an excellent example! I was watching a recent interview with Peter Frampton and he was talking about his Rolling Stone cover where he was persuaded to take off his shirt. He said that was the worst thing he could have done because it ruined him for the very reasons you mention. All of a sudden, he was a sex symbol with the girls, so they guys suddenly stopped listening to him. They no longer thought he was cool, or felt their sexuality would be questioned if they kept listeningd to him. When I was in college, a friend of mine was a huge fan of Queen. I said something one day about Freddie Mercury being gay or bisexual and the guy went berserk.
LittleRickyII 07-27-2015, 12:37 AM Did Mary and Rhoda guest star in that ep?
I haven't seen it in a long time, but I don't think so. But Phyllis did make a reference to Rhoda when she realized she had ruined both Rhoda's wedding and Mother Dexter's wedding.
Bonniegirl 07-27-2015, 12:41 AM Both of the eps. tonight were very well done and emotional IMO!!!
And I was right, Barbara and Max did kiss, I was hoping for that, but not for it to go much further! It was believable and very romantic IMO!! I know she was married, and loved Mark, and Max loved them like family and respected them, but things happen, emotions get in the way of reason sometimes!! I could go on and on but I think you got my point! And glad they put Grandma Romano in , comic relief from all the emotion , her bringing in random girls off the street to meet Max, that was funny!
Wow, the last ep. when the apartment was empty, all the furniture out and when they were talking it was echoing!!!! It was very realistic, sad and a little eerie even! When a place is empty it is like that! And it first became noticeable when Max came in and started talking, because he has a loud voice! his voice was really echoing, and than all the others were too! And that back window seat that I always thought was so cool, that nobody really ever sat on and I wondered why? Ann and Barbara sat there tonight! And the final seen where it went back to the very beginning with Ann, and the very young Barbara and Julie, I was in TEARS!!!!
I LOVE this show!!!!

Yep. :) I have to say, though, I only really liked the show when Mother Dexter was on. When Judith Lowry (the actress who played her) died, there wasn't much point in watching anymore. That was one of the final straws, as I recall, that led to the series ending. She died, and Burt Mustin, who played Mother Dexter's boyfriend/husband died within about a month of her. Also, the actress who played Phyllis's work colleague at the beginning of the first season, was murdered. Lots of tragedy followed that show.
Okay, what am I supposed to be talking about? Whether or not One Day at a Time was a great show?

One Day is not a good show to watch over and over due to the lack of comedy and tons of drama

I watch for the drama and the sprinkling of comedy! ;) It's so original, it's supposed to be a comedy but it really does have a soap opera feel to it more!! ;) I think TV Fact Fan, it is a show women would appreciate more, and the men if they have a crush on Barbara !!! LOL!!!! :D
And as I posted before ( sorry to repeat myself) but when it was on first run I was a teenager and in my young 20's! I "get it" more now than I did back than! Like you, back than I was like this show isn't that funny! Now I see it isn't really supposed to be ROTF funny, you have to pick up the subtle humor, and just go with the flow! ;) If I'm making any kind of sense at all?

It's a great show. I still enjoy it. I stopped watching it when Antenna TV started skipping shows but I did watch that last episode. It's just as powerful as I remember. I got my DVR set for tonight because I never saw the Schneider spin-off episode. I'll watch the episodes I missed when they go around again.

Since I plan to post less now (otherwise I'm just saying the stuff I said the first cycle), I'll say how I found it one more time. I wasn't from a divorced home, so I couldn't relate to that angle. It was female centered, so I couldn't relate to that aspect. I was however many years old, there were 3 channels, seeing what's on, it was "woah, she's cute" , and I stuck with it ever since.

Not me. LOL I'm glad you all will enjoy it again, but once is enough for me. I watched it this cycle just to see it for nostalgia's sake since I hadn't seen it in 30 years, and to FINALLY again see Alex break the plant and say "I broke the plant" that I hadn't see in 30 years, and that became such an inside joke with a friend and me for the past 12 years.
It was interesting to watch, but this show rarely made me "lol". If I'm going to watch a dramedy I much prefer something like The Facts of Life that really makes me laugh during the comedy parts. :)

There are few shows I ever hated as much as The Facts of Life. To each his own, I guess.

Yup, I own the first 5 seasons on DVD and am on my way to season 6 :)
TVFactFan 07-28-2015, 07:57 PM Not me.

I now have nothing to watch at 11pm LOL

I probably could only watch the last 2 seasons of FOL

Be optimistic, now you have an extra hour in the day to be constructive! lol :)

The two I could most do without, lol. Still, those seasons make me laugh more than ODAAT does. I was surprised during the run discovering (like some other posters) how little a "lol" show ODAAT is.

Well at my age I can't watch a show with a bunch of teenage girls LOL
BigManMike 07-29-2015, 09:59 PM From what little I've seen of One Day at a Time, I don't find it that funny either although it's still a nice enjoyable show to me. But I refuse to watch with credit crunches. Then again, I don't find Hazel to be that funny either but still enjoy the show. On the other hand, I love the Facts of Life. Sometimes it can be real funny, other times not as much, but I still like it most of the time. I'm very pleased with the complete series set I have of it from Shout.

FOL is more watchable that ODDAT because of a stronger lead character

Really, you don't think Hazel is funny?? I think Hazel is great IMO!!!! Shirley Booth is a riot! But than I am a fan of the really corny old 60's comedies! ;)
I was never really a fan of Facts of life to be honest! ;)

I don't know why, I just don't find myself laughing that much but the show is still very enjoyable. To me, it's more of a nice quiet family drama.

FOL was a great show. I adored all the girls... Blair, Natalie, Tootie and Jo. Mrs. Garrett was also great. I also loved the first season with Nancy, Sue Ann and Molly.
FOL is the type of show that you can watch again over time. ODAAT is a see once type of show for me. Once is enough and it does not stand the test of time in my opinion.

Hey it's a free country, you can watch anything you want, lol :)

Hey, you left out Cindy! She's my favorite season 1 girl! :) Followed by Molly, and then from season 2 on it's hilarious Blair Warner! :D
And of course we Eastlanders love Mrs. Garrett!
biffbronson 07-31-2015, 04:13 AM I was older than the demographic that The Facts of Life appealed to, though I did watch it occasionally.
I think generally that there was a significant shift in common sitcoms from the urban apartment setting (ODAAT, Good Times, Jeffersons, TMTMS, Rhoda, The Bob Newhart Show), along with other urban settings that were sometimes underprivileged (AITF, Welcome Back Kotter, Alice, Taxi, Chico & the Man) to more idealized single-family home sets (Family Ties, Full House, Growing Pains, The Cosby Show, Home Improvement). Newhart is a good example of this type of shift, as compared with Bob's earlier urban apartment-based series.
Even when the urban apartment setting is revisited (Caroline in the City, Mad About You, Frasier), the new series tended to be very upscale. ODAAT was in the model of earlier series: far less idealistic and striving for realism people could relate too more easily.
Jinxey 07-31-2015, 08:38 AM Just like Three's Company, I really don't need to watch the first three seasons, I could start from Season 4

I would say season 3 season and after. Season 1 to mid season 2 is like....not all that good

But the early seasons of TC are the "organic" seasons; I find them more interesting than the later seasons.

Not a lot of FUN eps in season 2 like it was in season 3 and after.
The worst ep of TC is Chrissy and the Guru
Mickey4ever 08-13-2015, 08:29 PM Waving  to a few of you that are watching this cycle of ODAAT.....I picked it up when Barbara got married....so I'm watching now and hope to see them all....it has been a while since it was originally aired that I had seen any episodes!
I dvr it every evening and watch usually the next day if I can, but did they skip some episodes after the second season started showing? Seemed it was the start of season 2 and then Ginny was on...just seemed like they skipped some shows.
I really was noticing just how much Mark Hamill's looks changed after the disfiguring accident he had. I'm so used to the Mark Hamill I've known for years, post accident, that I had forgotten what he looked like before. He has had a long career though after suffering such a horrendous accident.
