One of yesterdays eps. Wally buying his own suit. I actually thought it was pretty cool. Was it really that bad I wonder if it had been in color? I wonder what colors it was? Ward said it was loud! LOL!!! They should make a colorized version of that ep.! But for a teenage boy, was it really that bad? It looked kind of baggy and all the pockets, but like I said I thought it was cool! ;)

Beaver saying wouldn't it be neat if they made blue jean suits? About 15 years later in the 70's , they were! Beaver got his wish! LOL!! :D

Beaver was prophetic!

Very hard to say what color Wally's fabric was. Solid colors though I think were pretty much a given for men & boys, with narrow lapels and modest details. So maybe its pattern was sort of objectionable.

Men's fashions were quite understated in those years. Most of my dad's suits were in solid shades of grey. At least one black suit for funerals. One or two lighter color tan, for the summer. It wasn't until the mid-'70s that he bought some plaids. That's in the wide-lapel era.

My dad was a fairly sharp dresser, and liked to wear a grey men's hat in the '50s and '60s, with a wide black band. Sort of like you'd see Al Capone wear decades earlier. So I guess hats could still be a little flashy. (My uncle had a big head and hated wearing that type of hat -- he didn't like how he looked. LOL. So he was glad hats began falling out of style in the JFK era...! lol)

When push came to shove even Eddie and Lumpy wouldn't wear a suit like Wally bought! They went with something far more conservative! I think that pretty much tells us all we need to know about Wally's suit. If it was too "flashy" for Eddie Haskell than there's no way it was suitable (pun intended!) for Wally Cleaver!

Back than like Biffbronson said suits were usually one color and very plain , conservative. And Wally was from a good upper middle class family in a small town and going to a dance and the Cleaver name had to be represented well!

But the suit was at the store. Somebody must have worn that type of suit back than? I'm thinking that was more like for rebellious types. Like a beatnik perhaps, a jazz musician or something a guy would wear to a wild nightclub or something? Also it was oversized! Or maybe just too big for Wally? But it reminded me of the suits that came in style in the 80's that were kind of big looking. I liked that look actually! But for the late 50's , as Ward was commenting on Wally's suit, I was looking at Ward's suit , and it looked very form fitting, almost like it was too tight!

So Wally's suit was big, and not solid , had a wild colorful pattern. If he were a bachelor playboy going to a wild jazz nightclub he would fit right in, but as a conservative teen from a small town it was a bit out of place I guess! LOL!!

Still it was awesome. I loved that suit, and I really would love to see that ep in a colorized version!!!! Who's with me on that?

This is kind of like the pattern of Wally's suit! LOL! Maybe Wally was an aspiring game show host!

I have a couple of things I know you'll also like, Bonniegirl, so I'll hold onto them and bequeath them to you:

1) My brother's dark blue leisure suit, from the '70s. Worn with stacked-heel shoes!!
2) My late dad's bright red velour sportscoat, which he wore only on Easter (also '70s).

I used to wear a couple of neat items of my own, but they were later sent to my younger cousins so I no longer have 'em:

1) A "houndstooth" sportscoat, likely my very first, from 1968 - worn with a bowtie.
2) A red corduroy suit, circa 1971. I think I was wearing my yellow dress shirt with that! I don't know how my mom kept me from wearing holes in the knees of the pants!!

The clothing salesman is played by veteran character actor John Hoyt, who made hundreds of guest appearances on TV series from the 1950's to the 1980's, and although I never watched it, seems to have been a regular on Gimme a Break in the 1980's.

I wish there was a way we could contact Tony Dow and ask him. I'm not really that internet savvy, and I don't have face book or twitter or anything. But I wonder if somehow we could get in touch with him like that and ask him, what color was that loud suit you wore from season 2? Or even if we could contact Jerry Mathers or Ken Osmond. They would probably remember too, even though they weren't wearing the suit? Could we find them on face book or Twitter somehow?

As for John Hoyt, the first time I saw him was on Gimme a Break and as the years passed I saw him in so many earlier shows.

Wally Cleaver was so dapper he could have worn any color and made it look good and the girls all go gaga over him. :)

Yes Wally was adorable! If I was a teenage girl back than in Mayfield, I'd go to a dance with him anytime! ;) :)

I got the impression it was a green plaid with yellow trim as it seemed light. Back then it would have raised eyebrows with the adults and thought to be a real mind blower with your friends. Imagine if he had a yellow shirt to show off the trim. In Football Banquet I wonder if Beaver would have gotten the same reaction if he wore that suit instead of going casual.

Today is the 60th anniversary of the first broadcast of "Wally's Suit." Feel free to post your comments on the episode.

This was an episode where June came up with the answer instead of Ward. She adroitly maneuvered Wally into accepting the blue suit, with the help of Mr. Hoyt.

And she didn't even have to go snooping to do it!

Yes, I thought June's handling of the situation was just perfect and certainly more effective than Ward's.

June showed women’s intuition or just plain wisdom in getting Wally to rethink that suit and seemed like it was planned that way. I guess on the phone he also agreed that wasn’t the best suit for Wally.

I was surprised that he let Wally leave the store without alterations. Maybe the salesman knew he wouldn’t keep the suit.

That's probably it. He thought the parents would be back to exchange it.

If Judy's mother was still the head buyer, (ha ha), I'm surprised the store even bought it in the first place.

It seemed like there was a pattern of boys buying the suit and then returning it after their parents disapproved.

As I recall Judy’s mother was in Women’s ready to wear.

Would have loved to have seen Wally in the crazy suit with the Jellyroll haircomb. He would have really looked like a tango dancer. Ward had the same expression on his face with the suit, Eskimo sweater and haircomb.

She had to help out when the men's suit head buyer was out with a cold.

It's interesting that Ward was more upset over the suit than over the haircut, while for June it was the reverse.

Yeah June really went bananas over Wally's hair. Even went to see the principal.

Later she throws a fit when Beaver comes downstairs with the same hair comb. And finally she orders Wally to fix it, because she says so.

It's probably the only episode where she really lost her cool. In the mis-titled Visiting Aunts she was ticked, but was low key in dealing with the boys.

I saw that same type of suit in Singin’ in The Rain. Gene Kelly wore it.
