With all these hero and horror franchises getting reboots, it’s time to ask when Xena: Warrior Princess is coming back. Luckily, the show’s star, Lucy Lawless, is wondering too, as she told Den of Geek (http://www.denofgeek.us/tv/xena-warrior-princess/247710/lucy-lawless-wants-to-play-xena-again):

“I’ve been pitching that, actually,” Lawless said. “The fans really do want that, and I’ve met some people who’ve crowdfunded some things, and I’m just like, ‘Why don’t we just do that?’”

This, despite the fact that Xena died at the end of the original series.

“So what? Technicality!” Lawless laughs. “No one really dies! Screw her head back on, it’s a bit wonky, and she’s got a really bad attitude since she’s been in a box for 20 years, so they’ve got to get Xena’s mojo back, and go and save the world somehow.”

There’s also the matter of getting the rights to the show back, Lawless said, a point she brought up when she teased a reboot back in 2013 (http://uproxx.com/tv/2013/05/to-the-dismay-of-ron-swanson-xena-warrior-princess-may-be-revived/). Still, with Netflix, crowdfunding and other platforms, maybe 2015 is Xena’s year.

Lawless took to Twitter to respond to the news that NBC was looking to reboot Xena: Warrior Princess. She wrote: "Sorry, friends! News of a #Xena reboot is just a rumor. I'd love it to happen one day but it's still in the wishful thinking stage.”

It is happening; they are just NOT gonna use Lawless as the lead.

Do you know who?

No. But I read at least two articles that said they were seeking the audience that made "Hunger games" such a hit trilogy. So think Jennifer Lawrence-like.

The Hollywood Reporter says a deal is still in place to reboot Xena: Warrior Princess, and NBC would like to have Lawless involved in some capacity. At the TV press tour, Lawless, who was promoting Ash vs. Evil Dead, said of the Xena reboot: "I'd love to see it happen, and I know that NBC wants to do it but they're just trying to find a way and a time."

NBC Boss on "Xena" Reboot: "We're Looking for a Writer"
by Lesley Goldberg
August 12, 2015

NBC's bid to bring "Xena: Warrior Princess" back to the small screen is still in full swing.

Despite public statements from former star Lucy Lawless, NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the network is looking for a way to reboot the beloved series in which she starred as the warrior princess.

"Yes, we're in the early stages of developing a new take on Xena and we're looking for a writer. We want to do it," Greenblatt told THR on Wednesday night at NBCUniversal's Television Critics Association summer press tour party at Spago.

"I don't think it's just a continuation, but we haven't gotten that far. I think it's a great character, and we should try to figure out how to revive it somehow," Greenblatt said, confirming that "there is a deal with Sam and Rob Tapert to produce, and it's with NBC International."

While the executive noted that it was too early to tell what the focus for a new Xena would be, he said much of the creative would depend on the writer's vision. Sources indicate that the network is meeting with their top choice for a scribe for the potential series, though who that is is being kept under wraps.

As for whether Lawless would have an onscreen role, Greenblatt noted that he's open to it — on one condition: "We'd love to have Lucy be a part of it — if we felt that her presence didn't overshadow the direction we take with it. I'm not sure how she could be part of it if she wasn't playing Xena, and I don't know if that's a direction we'll ever go," he said, noting that he'd be open to having the actress — who is married to Tapert — involved creatively behind the scenes.

The potential series is being eyed for 2016.
