I just rewatched this one for the first time in many years, and am realizing just how disturbing of a segment it is.

The owner catches a slave in the absolutely horrible crime of EAVESDROPPING and decided that he will just CUT OFF AN EAR FROM THE SIDE OF HER FACE!! To get revenge, said slave decides that she will POISON THE WHOLE FAMILY by grinding up oleander leaves and putting them in a birthday cake, causing the deaths of three people including a little girl whose birthday it was.

And if that wasn't enough to give you nightmares, how about the guy that opened the front door to the plantation and was shot 3 times by an unknown man for unknown reasons?

What. The. Hell?

And the old man that was robbed, beaten and killed doesn't exactly help matters any.

Reason #789 why I will just continue to stay the hell out of Louisiana thank you very much.

Ive seen the same lady who is on the segment of Unsolved Mysteries on several other programs. She states that the slaves intention was to nurse them back to health AFTER she poisoned them? Yeah sure. First the "Owner" of the slave was a sicko for cutting off the ladies ear WTH!?!? And the slave was disturbed as well. I can imagine being very upset regarding her ear. Vicious and barbaric act. I cant blame her for poisoning the idiot for it. But the entire family? The kids? Come On! I always felt the lady who was the caretaker is making excuses for the slave. There is no excuse for her being a slave mind you. Terrible time in American History. Luckily thousands died (Unfortunately) ending slavery. But both sides were horrifically wrong here. I hate when kids are hurt. Disturbs the hell outta me.

Even though Chloe was of course wrong to do the poisoning with the intention of nursing the women back to health and getting back in their good graces, I can fathom why she would come up with such a plan; she was probably living in fear of further torture, beatings, and possibly being sold to the deep south. I don't think that the lady in the segment was making excuses for her or condoning the cake poisoning at all; she was explaining why Chloe chose to do so.

I find this one sad to watch for the above incidents as well as the poor man getting shot and trying to reach his wife climbing the stairs. This place is full of tragedy :( Anyone been by it or stayed as a guest at the hotel?

I see what you're saying. However, Why POISON them???? Give them something that would make them vomit. Laxatives or something. Not poison them to the point of killing them. The head of the household? Sure, Poison the bastard. Why not? Sounds terrible and callus but he had it comin. And she could have poisoned him I imagine very easily. Evening drink or something. It definitely wasn't a very good idea. I don't know much about oleander leaves, but I imagine that she thought putting a certain amount in wouldn't be fatal. I don't think she intentionally killed them because she knew she would be the number one suspect and lynched, which ultimately happened. I can totally see why you would think that though.

Because of the time period and her working in the kitchen rather than the fields, I think she probably couldn't think of anything to use to make them sick in a minor way. I'm sure there are plants and things that could cause a laxative effect, but she probably didn't have those at her disposal/know about them.

Im sure she worked in both. No way to know if she did one or the other or both. No one knows. But Oleander Leaves have been around a VERY LONG TIME. According to EHOW

Its one of the most poisonous plants. Ingesting a single leaf can be fatal. In 2000 2 toddlers died from ingesting oleander leaves.
