View Full Version : Dear Max on Monday Night
LittleRickyII 07-17-2015, 06:23 PM This is just a program alert that this infamous episode airs on Monday night in the second half of the ODAAT hour. I'm interested to see how they wrote this episode because it's hard for me to imagine Julie abandoning her baby daughter and her entire family.

I know!! I'm not gonna miss this ep for anything! ;)
JoshLarson24 07-18-2015, 04:35 PM I am guessing you guys are watching this show for the first time because you get excited for shows that aired 30 years ago.
mets82 07-18-2015, 04:54 PM Thanks for the heads up. I'd like to see how the episode is written. Having Julie, Max, Barbara and Mark living together didn't last long. Actually u can kind of tell Julie might leave in the episode that just aired about how mad Julie was that Max was a writer and not making any money.
Bonniegirl 07-18-2015, 05:55 PM I am guessing you guys are watching this show for the first time because you get excited for shows that aired 30 years ago.
I only watched ODAAT for the first couple of seasons first run. And than only saw it here and there in reruns. Even in reruns it didn't play over and over again like say Brady Bunch, Three's company, All in the Family. So even if someone has seen all of them in reruns it's still like they haven't seen them 100 times! ! ;) I don't think I've ever seen a 9th season ep at all before now! So it is exciting that it's on again! For me anyway! ;) And I found a new crush , Max!! :) :D

I can't read your tone, but that seems like an odd comment to make. Isn't that the sole purpose of these boards, to talk about and keep alive the old shows?

Sorry about that. The ODAAT fan in me is saying "Duh, the show ended over 30 years ago so how can you people be talking about it like it is brand new. I am so sorry about that. It is more of a joke than meant to be taken seriously.

Like Bonniegirl, I watched the first few seasons during the original run. I even remember seeing the show the night it debuted in 1975. From that point on, for several years, I saw the show every week. But by about the seventh or eighth season I had lost interest and was no longer watching. So these storylines from the 8th and 9th seasons are entirely new to me. I wrote about this in another thread: http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=338800
As for the "Dear Max" episode, I'm just curious because it seems so implausible that Julie would just walk away from her child and the rest of her family. I'm curious how the writers handled this.
billybatts 07-19-2015, 05:37 AM I remember watching what must have been reruns of the first couple of seasons, because I was BORN in 1975 so I doubt i would remember watching as a baby. I don't remember anything after David left.
So this is like a first run series for me. Plus like Bonniegirl said, this is one show that has not been replayed a lot over the years, so we should enjoy it while we can.

Because the show hasn't been available to see on TV in over 15 years. You had the show but not many people did

Yup the show only aired in chicago for years and E! back in 2000
Mr. Television 07-19-2015, 09:40 PM I only saw the episode once and that's when it first aired. From what I remember she just took off. I think she might have left a note. It was all very sudden. But when you haven't seen a show in so long, it is just like it's new.

Yep! I'm all ready to see it! ;) I came in late on tonight's eps. I was visiting a friend from the neighborhood this afternoon , and I was trying to get back home by 6 to see ODAAT ! I didn't get back till 10 after. The travel agency ep was good, but like I said I didn't see it from the start! I found out that Max is a lefty ( left handed) Very cool! ;) LOL! When Barbara called Mr. Jones back and talked to his wife and found out he was making reservations for himself and another woman! Uhh oh!!
And the Christmas ep was really good! I thought it was a really good, fun ep! :) ;)

My boy Mr. Carlin was in that Travel Agency ep from Bob Newhart

My motive was partially selfish. :) I can be forgetful and thought I should post something here while it was on my mind, to remind myself as well as others. So keep commenting until tomorrow so this reminder keeps popping up. :)
My boy Mr. Carlin was in that Travel Agency ep from Bob Newhart
And just like Mr. Carlin, this character doesn't know how to smile.
Bonniegirl 07-19-2015, 11:12 PM My boy Mr. Carlin was in that Travel Agency ep from Bob Newhart
YEP!! He sure was!!!! :) Mr. Carlin from Bob Newhart!!! :D Same delivery of his lines and deadpan humor as a psychiatrist 's patient or the owner of a travel agency!!! ;) :D
1960'sTVfan 07-19-2015, 11:38 PM I set the DVR to record this one in case I forget it's on. Does Mac appear in this episode, or was her final appearance prior to this episode?

No she doesnt which is why the episode is called Dear Max

I never saw it. But from what I am putting together , she sends a letter breaking up with him/leaving him ! A 'Dear John" letter ! Hence the "Dear Max" title!:(
MacKenzie Phillips was already let go at this point for the final time a few episodes before "Dear Max"!

Why couldn't Good Times do that with John Amos? A letter to the kids and Florida saying he needed to go to Alaska and do what's best for the family:lol:
Family Ties Forever! 07-20-2015, 05:12 AM I'm seeing the series for the first time, so the episodes are new to me. I wasn't even alive during the first 3 seasons. I was only 5 when the show ended in the spring of 1984.
mets82 07-20-2015, 05:05 PM I figured as much with Julie. I mean she wasn't in a few episodes so they had to address it.
I wonder if CBS originally heavily hyped the DEAR MAX episode, or just quietly ran it as a regular one.
Bonniegirl 07-20-2015, 05:43 PM Another "must see' ep. for us to look forward too is-----
"The nearness of you" - Working side by side at the travel agency spawns a growing attraction between Max and Barbara that becomes impossible to ignore!!!
OMG!! This sounds GOOD!! I'm not missing this one for the world either!!! I'm thinking it should be coming up maybe this week?

If I remember right, that description is slightly misleading. It'll be the first episode on Sunday, followed by the series finale.

If they did that, we wouldn't have the classic "Damn, damn, DAMN!!!" -- the most memorable words from that series other than "dy-no-MITE!" :)

Now it's done, really done.
The episode is written more like Julie died than if she left.
I agree. Maybe that's what they really should have done, kill off the character. Perhaps they still had some faint hope that Mac might get her act together, and that the series would go on and on and one day Mac would return. But the logical thing (other than killing off Julie) would be to have Max, Julie and Annie ALL move to Texas. I'm guessing, though, that the producers must have really liked Michael Lembeck and were trying to find a way to keep him in the cast. But this episode just seemed too contrived. I wasn't buying it at all.

Barbara didn't seem to care, or Mark:lol:
Bonniegirl 07-21-2015, 12:15 AM I think if it was nowadays Julie would be diagnosed with bi-polar or OCD! She was falling apart and didn't think she was able to handle being a wife and Mom anymore! And with their financial problems too, she fell apart. I'm seeing her as less of a b*tch now that I saw the ep, but a troubled women and before I was thinking OK leave Max but take your baby lady. But now I'm seeing how she thought Max and her family would give Annie a much better life than she could if she left and it was just her and Annie alone. What if Julie's mental state got worse. What would happen to poor Annie than? She was leaving her in good hands, and esp, having a sister who couldn't have children. Well now she has Annie! So see I am not looking as Julie as a big bad witch as much as I was before I actually saw this ep.
And ya know I as much as I love Max, it is kind of Karma! Look at the way he stole Julie from his best friend, now she left him and now it is coming back to bite him in the A**! I felt sad for him though. And did you notice, he was still wearing his wedding ring throughout the show!

You're very observant. No, I didn't notice the ring. But I'm thinking that Ann should have gotten on a plane to go see her daughter. Julie is obviously very troubled and a mother wouldn't just let her hang out to dry. The whole episode felt phony and contrived. I know it was a difficult thing to write without Mackenzie participating at all, but it just didn't work.

That's what made it seem like a death episode.
There was no feedback from the character and they were telling funny stories about her, worrying about the baby, ect...
But the Julie character did have a history of this type of behavior. So i agree, it could have been that she was Bi-polar or had some other type of mental problem.

Exactly!! Bipolar or obsessive compulsive. She always was jumping into things and not following through. Hence the very quick marriage, (Fred , who she met on a weekend ski trip) and than even ending up marrying a different man (Max) than her intended in the same wedding too!
As Little Ricky posted Ann should have surely hopped on a plane and went to her to see up close what was going on and get her some help or whatever! I'm glad the family talked Max into staying there with Annie, and being a stable Barbara their who can't have her own children. It was like Annie got a new Mommy!!;) The writers probably wrote it that way about Barbara thinking something like this might come up with Mack leaving the show! And Grandma Romano dearly loves little Annie, but she really is too old to care for her Fulltime, but she can lend Barbara and Max a hand! ;)
I am agreeing that the story was a bit contrived. Too rushed. I think it should have been a two parter for one thing. The letter coming in the mail just when they were about to have that little party for Grand ma's B'day was a little fake  And Max reading the letter too quickly, well he could have been in shock I guess, but that part right there should have had more drama or something! ;)

I think they cared. Surprised? Shocked? No. Cause they knew Julie! Cared? Yeah they cared, but that's what we are saying, the ep could have played out and been written better! ;)
1960'sTVfan 07-21-2015, 11:08 AM I thought the episode was OK, could have been better, could have been worse. Since Mac was let go from the show, the writers had to come up with something to explain her absence. I think they could have elaborated the situation a little more and made it a two part episode, but it is what it is. The actors worked with the material they were given. Considering the reality of the situation, would be interesting to know what was going on in the actors minds during the making of this episode, during the whole season for that matter, regarding Mac's unfortunate departure from the show.
One question though: Where was Max in this episode? He was nowhere to be found, I thought that was strange. Unless maybe Antenna TV cut his part out, these are edited episodes they are showing.

Max was in the whole episode!!! Do you mean Sam? Cause he wasn't in at all I don't think. But he had nothing really do do with the story, but I thought he would at least be at his new Mother in laws birthday party! Maybe he was at work, cause it seemed like the party was early if the mail was just being delivered right than.
If you do mean Max. IDK what to say, he totally was there! ;)

Yeah that is who I thought you meant! As far as I remember Sam wasn't in this ep at all! I guess the writers thought he wasn't needed ! The whole ep was done weird, like I said they were having the birthday celebration just when the mail arrived! Seemed to early to start the party, I know Katherine is kind of old, but not THAT old, that she would be falling asleep if it got later! I guess they wanted everyone around when the letter arrived. I think it would have been better if Max received it by himself or with just Barb and Mark there, cause they lived there. And the postman brought it right to the door. It wasn't a registered letter was it?

I don't recall if the letter was registered, I don't think it was but not sure. I agree the episode could have been written better, maybe the writers rushed it through. It's possible Sam wasn't in this episode, and instead Katherine was given more participation.
You seem like a fun person Bonniegirl, likes to laugh and have a good time. It's nice talking to you here about different topics, TV, music, etc. Too bad you're married, I'm shopping for a new girlfriend. ;)

Thanks Bonniegirl, Sitcoms Online friend, I am a cool and easy going type of guy. Always good to chat with you here because we seem to have similar likes and dislikes. Send me a PM sometime if you like, and we can chat there also.
I'm glad Antenna TV is showing One Day At A Time all the way through to season 9. Since the full series isn't out on DVD, the only way to see the episodes is by reruns on TV. I just wish Antenna TV would show the episodes uncut, but I guess that would be too much to ask, they have to make sure and fill in the mandatory amount of commercial time.
Intelligent discussion here, as usual. Well, from most of you...
Oh, I googled the original credits. No Sam.
Mickey4ever 07-21-2015, 09:18 PM This whole episode reminded me when watching, that they really weren't talking about Julie the character, but in reality Mackenzie the person. Just seemed like the being mad and upset and ragging on the character Julie, was all of them actually ragging on Mackenzie and probably having a bit of sadness to themselves about what had happened to their friend/castmate, but really, really being put out with her and her transgressions and how it had to be worked into the show.
JMHO.........of which I have many LOL:crazy:

That's also why it may have seemed that the characters didn't care about Julie, because it was hard for them to hide their true feelings for Mack.
'80sSitcoms 07-22-2015, 08:28 AM The episode is written more like Julie died than if she left.
No, it's written like she left, because she did, lol. :) Now you could say it's written like she committed suicide, but not just "died".
Ann didn't seemed like she cared and especially Barbara. Lol
Did you watch the episode? lol ;) They cared, they cared through the whole thing...my favorite scenes were the ones between Barbara and Mark and Max...very emotional....
I don't recall if the letter was registered, I don't think it was but not sure.
Yes it was registered. That's what made the delivery of it stand out; you don't hear of "registered letters" anymore.
TVFactFan 07-23-2015, 12:28 AM No, it's written like she left, because she did, lol. :) Now you could say it's written like she committed suicide, but not just "died".

I watched it and Mark and Barbara didn't seem that bothered that she left
Assuming it okay to show things from other sites, I thought this had good points to say:
>>Well for the first time in 31 years ,I saw this gut wrenching episode. WOW!
It was even sadder than I recalled.
Imagine ,receiving an 'it'sall over' mesaage
from someone you love by 'special delivery' (rush/overnight del.) .
(Remembering it's a TV show) I know that internally Julie's confused and all but still...(ifMacKenzie'd been allowed on theset) Julie should have hadthe guts to show up herself and face Max.
Ann;s reaction was a bit confusing. One the one hand she says 'Damn, her!' but then on the other ,she defends her daughter because the things Julie's done in the past prety much led up to ti & she understands her daughter's feelings. (
I understanding doesn't make it any the less frustrating and anger inducing.
Michael Lembeck and Boyd Gaines (in my opinon) turned in Emmy (winning)
level performances. Max (Michael0 was really crying & so was Mark(Boyd).
Mark & Barbara's loving support really rang true in that scene in the kitchen.
Not surprisingly ,the hardest thing is Julie walking out on herbaby ,as
well as Max. She loves her daughter but think s she's not good enough of a mother?
She should have thought of all of that before trying to fill her life's void's with a marriage & baby. Seems like Julie was always looking ofr 'instant gratification' in life ,maybe due in large part with her parents' split-up.
All of this on Katherine's brithday too . What a bummer. <<

When Mark wiped the tear from Max's face in the kitchen, that was like WOW!!! :(
I guess the registered letter got passed me some how! You have to sign for them I thought? Anyway. I think the ep was too rushed in the beginning, got to the point right off the bat, too rushed. But it could be cause we were all watching, waiting, expecting it to happen!
Bonniegirl 07-23-2015, 02:16 AM This whole episode reminded me when watching, that they really weren't talking about Julie the character, but in reality Mackenzie the person.
Yeah, good point! ;) Sad that it all came down to this:( but yeah I see what you are saying! ;)
Bonniegirl 11-12-2015, 11:33 PM BUMPING up this thread!!!!! This is the second ep. tonight!!!!
Mickey4ever 11-13-2015, 01:13 AM As I sit and watch this episode again, I feel the same as I did/posted back in July...
So many moments of this episode are so incredibly sad to me...and after seeing this again in a few short months, I have to say, I think it is one of the best episodes of all the years this show was on! JMHO of course, but the real emotions they all show just seem so real, once again going back to the circumstances of Julie/Mac being written out.
They did throw in a few humorous moments to keep it a little light, but overall, it just as a very sad episode.
mets82 11-13-2015, 03:04 AM Well I finally saw the episode. I fell asleep last time. Have to say that Max was great. I do think he was a bit out of line when he wanted to take Ann away. You know Ann, grandma, Mark, Barbara and Schiender would help Max take care of Ann. Max was just great although he made his decision to stay pretty quick after he was dead set to leave.
Mickey4ever 11-13-2015, 09:03 AM I think perhaps the wanting to take Annie away with him, was his lash out about the whole thing, and not wanting to be in a place that reminded him of nothing but his life with Julie. He obviously wasn't thinking with a straight mind and made that decision without thinking of all the ramifications of picking up and moving on. He even said as much while in the room alone with Annie.
After Barb came to the door, I think he not only realized, but knew that he and Annie needed all of them to help him get through this and how much both he and Annie were loved and wanted.
Bonniegirl 11-13-2015, 02:03 PM Wow!!! It was even sadder than I remembered from last time around. I was very teary eyed watching last night! And better than I remember. The acting was really good! Max was pretty much expecting her to be leaving him I think! All the fighting that led up to it. All in all getting the letter though was a hard way for her to end it though!
Other than that, what I posted last time around is still how I feel!
Barbara didn't seem to care, or Mark:lol:
I totally get opposing viewpoints, but this is like watching TITANIC and going, "You know, that boat really didn't seem to sink"

I totally think Barbara cared! As would be expected if your sister abandoned her baby and husband!:( And Mark ( Boyd Gaines )really showed his acting skills in this .Really played the part well as a nice caring Brother in law during a family crisis like this one! ;)
mets82 11-13-2015, 04:18 PM That kind of came out of left field because werent Max and Mark not getting along throughout the series?

No, they got along fine! Max even worked as a receptionist at Mark's dental office for a little while! :D
mets82 11-13-2015, 09:47 PM Yes your right but wasn't that after Julie left?
Yes your right but wasn't that after Julie left?
No, that was before. However, if you're remembering Max/Mark dust ups, you're not wrong. But those were basically generic sitcom fights ("Go suck an egg Horvath" comes to mind),always wrapped up before the episode ends.
Bonniegirl 03-25-2016, 02:10 PM This will be on in less than 2 hours!!! I'm counting the minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!
mets82 03-25-2016, 05:57 PM I think they buried her mentioning her running away with a guy and her marrying Max instead of Fred. Translation, she was a pain in the ass.
Anna Karenina 03-25-2016, 07:37 PM Wow, I forgot how Max "went there" with Ann reminding her that she too left her husband. Even Katherine the Mouth, never rubbed her nose in that.:D
I guess that was the last mention of poor ignored Ed who didn't even get one acknowledgement in the Christmas cruise episode when Mark's mother and Max's ill father who couldn't take any excitement (whatever that means) got their names referenced.
Bonniegirl 03-25-2016, 07:42 PM This is the third time I've seen this now and I was STILL SO emotional watching it today !!! I wanted to jump in the TV and hug poor Max and wipe his tears away!!!!!
It really was a good thing that Julie didn't take Annie with her!! I think that would have been REALLY devastating for Max, and the whole family too!!! And the fighting was getting so bad that would be stressful for Annie to grow up with her parents fighting like that!!! And it wasn't fair for Barbara and Mark either!!!! I really liked Julie, but if this was in real life maybe it was best she went. Hopefully she got the help she needed!!!!
I'd like to think that she got herself together, got therapy and on medication or something, and she did see Annie and have a relationship with her. Max having custody, but Julie having visitation rights and Annie not resenting her!!!! And Max having found another wife that was stable (and blonde and tiny, like a younger me for instance)!!! LOL!!!

ANNA!!!! :) HI!!!!! We must have been posting at the same time!!!! Because your post wasn't up yet when I came on this thread right now!!!! I know I had forgotten Max said that to Ann!! But poor guy, he was hurting, upset and angry. :( He didn't really mean to be a d*ck to Ann !! I'm sure he was sorry about that later !!!! ;)
Anna Karenina 03-25-2016, 08:18 PM Hey Bonniegirl!
Yes, that was out of character for Max to be a d*** to Ann and to her credit she understood where he was coming from and didn't get offended at his remarks.
I agree with your other remarks and posted my response to you earlier on the other thread.
mets82 03-26-2016, 12:29 AM At least Max apologized. I kind of think if the show went on any longer and if Julie came back, it could be a Kramer vs. Kramer type deal. Julie could be the Meryl Streep and even have Julie say she went to see a shrink etc. just like in Kramer vs. Kramer.
It's Monday night, this sounds like a good ep. What times it on?
