With the new fall TV season a little over two months away, I would like to present for you what the various Canadian TV networks and specialty channels will have in store for you in September, starting today with a look at the major networks:

CBC will begin the new season with several new series, mainly designed to attract younger audiences and offset the potential loss of their biggest moneymaker "Hockey Night In Canada", which may disappear from the network entirely in around 3 years from now. They will offer 6 new dramas and 4 new comedies, including: "Young Drunk Punk", a coming-of-age teenage story that debuted on City-Tv last season, "Fool Canada", a hidden camera prank show hosted by Will Sasso, and 2 scripted comedies set in England, "Please Like Me", and "Raised By Wolves".

The new season will also see 14 more series being renewed. On the comedy side, this means more of "The Rick Mercer Report", "This Hour Has 22 Minutes", "Dragon's Den" (a Canadian version of "Shark Tank"), "Just For Laughs", "Mr D", and Eugene Levy's new hit series "Schitt's Creek".

CTV, Canada's #1 network for a stunning 14 straight years, helped along by Canada's #1 sitcom, "The Big Bang Theory", is making very little changes to its primetime lineup, adding only 4 new series, all dramas:

"Quantico", "Blindspot", "Code Black", and "Oil", now called "Blood and Oil".

The midseason schedule will have 3 more new drama series, each offering a blend of supernatural fantasy and horror:

"DC's Legends Of Tomorrow", "Lucifer", and "The Catch".

CTV's sister network, CTV Two, will only make two new additions to their lineup, the mystery-horror hit series "Sleepy Hollow", returning for a third season, and the comedy-variety show "Best Time Ever With Neil Patrick Harris", which could potentially turn into a horror show if the ratings aren't great.

CITY will look to challenge CTV this season with a blend of sports, new shows, and returning hits, including "The Mindy Project", which will move from FOX to Hulu in the US but will adopt City as its exclusive Canadian carrier. Also, for the first time, CITY will carry "Hockey Night In Canada" on Saturdays but will no longer offer "Hometown Hockey" on Sundays since those games have now moved to Sportsnet. In its place, they will simulcast Fox's entire Sunday schedule except for "The Simpsons" which remains on Global (see below).

Like CTV, CITY will also have to adjust their schedule to accommodate the NFL on CBS on Thursdays. They will carry those NFL games until Oct. 29, after which "The Mindy Project" makes its debut after the CBC series "Mr D", the new comedy "Life In Pieces", and "Mom". "Life In Pieces" will air on Mondays in Sept/Oct following one of the most anticipated new series of the fall, "The Muppets". The other new series that will be on CITY will all appear on an all-rookie Tuesday night lineup starting with the new John Stamos travesty "Grandfathered", another new comedy "The Grinder", and drama series "Scream Queens". This looks like a real high-risk, high-reward schedule for CITY. The new shows could turn out to be big hits or, more likely, fail miserably.

Like CITY, Global will also be looking for a few instant hits from some of the new shows they'll be airing this fall. I like their chances with "Supergirl", "Heroes Reborn", and the new Jane Lynch comedy "Angels From Hell" but not so much with their other new comedy offering "People Are Talking" which will follow "Angels" on Friday nights. Another potential weak spot could be Sundays where "The Simpsons" for some strange reason will be seen at 10 pm, two hours after FOX. The other FOX Sunday night animated shows, a long time Global strength, have all moved to CITY, leaving a huge gap which they will try to fill with "Madam Secretary" and "The Good Wife". The rest of the week will be filled with reality series and dramas including the new series "Minority Report" and the entire "NCIS" group of shows. Overall, the schedule looks to have more hits than misses but not enough to challenge the other networks.

This week was another reminder of how far the mighty have fallen as Corus Entertainment announced that one of their main properties Teletoon Retro---which at one point a few years ago was boasting over 9 million subscribers---will go off the air effective Sept 1 at 6 am. Many of their more popular programs, including Bugs Bunny, Scooby Doo, and The Flintstones, will move over to the main Teletoon network, which until now had been showing all modern post-2000 cartoons. The new Teletoon will contain a mix of both old and new but it still remains to be seen how they will accomplish this.

Like many other specialty channels, Teletoon likes to wait until late August before officially unveiling their fall schedule. But there are others that didn't wait and I'll give you a few examples here:

The Comedy Network is a channel which features sketch comedies and standup comedy club performances with a few sitcoms thrown in, including the perennial favorite "The Big Bang Theory" as well as "Frasier", "The Simpsons", and Canadian sitcoms "Corner Gas" and "Red Green". It was also the home of Jon Stewart's popular late-night series which ends this week. This fall, it will be replaced by Jimmy Kimmel. Its 'sister' station Comedy Gold will have their new schedule out later this month. Don't expect too much!

Nothing explains the stunning decline and disinterest of Canadian specialty and digital channels more than DejaView. If you study its schedule carefully, you will notice a lot of familiar names which have remained stuck there for at least a half dozen years now: "Three's Company", "All In The Family", "The Golden Girls", "Roseanne", "The Jeffersons", "Married With Children", "Major Dad", and "Everybody Loves Raymond". Even worse than this is the stuff they've added. To a station which still proclaims itself on its home page to be "the channel devoted to bringing you TV's ultimate classics from the '60s, '70s and '80s" they will now include the following:

"Rookie Blue" (2010-current); "Bomb Girls" (2012-13); "Working The Engels" (2014); Haven (2010-current); and "William Shatner's Weird Or What" (2010-12). All are Canadian series from the last 5 seasons which nobody remembers or cares about. If you ask me, this is simply disgusting!

Yes TV, formerly CTS, is a religious channel which airs general syndicated entertainment series in the mid-afternoon and early evening in a cheap attempt to gain more viewers and distance itself from its "family friendly" CTS heyday. With shows like "Judge Judy", "Hot Bench", and "Family Feud" with the super-annoying Steve Harvey, they have certainly accomplished it. The good news: "Full House" is out and "Family Ties" is in, as well as "Everybody Loves Raymond" for the sitcom lovers. That's about it! The schedule will look like this:

CHCH-TV in Hamilton, Ontario is like YES TV in that it is a small channel from a small city that likes to think big, so it brands itself as "Canada's Superstation" and schedules programs of a similar nature, like "Justice With Judge Mablean" (whoever that is) and "Access Hollywood" during the daytime, and "Last Man Standing", "20/20" and "48 Hours" in prime time. (The entire morning and afternoon lineup will be all-news.) The nighttime lineup will also feature several new drama series including "Nashville", "Rosewood", "Supernatural", and "Raising Hope". The highlight of the new fall season for me will be the return of "Tiny Talent Time", which was revived after a long absence last season to celebrate the station's 60th anniversary. That might be all that's worth celebrating since the rest of the schedule looks very weak to me.

This is just a sample of what you can expect this fall on some of the major Canadian specialty channels out there---and there's more to come. It's not very good at all.

I keep reading more and more people are cutting the cord.

For those close to doing it, this would be the time. Three months officially (although in reality more) of non stop election coverage and commercials.

I have a question/comment which I kind of feel stupid asking. But maybe with a change in government, our classic TV viewing could improve.

What I mean by that is maybe a new government won't be as obsessed with Canadian content. A major problem with our Classic TV stations, is that a certain percentage of shows must be Canadian. And to make it worse, those shows usually get the best time slots.

Also, for Yes TV, what is the point of Family Ties being on in the mid afternoon? Kids are still in school then. At a better hour, newer viewers can be introduced to the show.

I have never bothered to subscribe to Deja Vu, and it appears I will have no gumption to re-think my current position.

You might want to do the same with Comedy Gold as well. Like DejaView, it wasn't that great but it still had some decent shows. As recently as a year ago, you could watch "I Love Lucy", "Mary Tyler Moore", "Rhoda", and both of Bob Newhart's shows. Starting this week, they will all be gone, replaced by "Wings", "Frasier", "Suddenly Susan", "Veronica's Closet", "Night Court" and a ton of "Growing Pains": 9 showings between 8:30 am and 3:00 pm. I don't see much gold out of that group!

Another thing you don't see is anything of a classic retro feel (the oldest series debuted in the mid 80s), and that brings me to the end of the line for this preview segment with the end of Teletoon Retro, which will officially close for good on Sept. 1. In its place will be the Canadian version of the Disney Channel, as many of its popular US series can now be seen here. The sad remains of Teletoon Retro will still live on with the main Teletoon channel. In addition to its regular programming, the new Teletoon will have "The Flintstones" at 12 and 12:30 pm daily plus "The Bugs Bunny and Tweety Show" at 7 pm as well as "The Scooby Doo Show" in the morning. That's all you'll see there for now because, sadly, at Teletoon, like everywhere else on Canadian TV, "Retro" has become like a dirty word, or more like an endangered species that has a very small chance of survival, and that has left me deeply angered and saddened. I have no idea where to turn next.

Canadian Television is so much like the US.. why even bother having different lineups?

In Canada there was a time where you could count on smaller stations airing more "retro" shows during the day or evening. Then there was a time when at least there was "TVTropolis" airing shows like "The Golden Girls" or "Newsradio." I wish I hadn't taken that time for granted. Now it's all reality TV, cooking shows and whatever else is airing on DTour and the dozens of stations like it.

Not long ago there were local stations that aired shows like "I Love Lucy" The Mary Tyler Moore Show," "Newhart," "The Odd Couple." Those same channels used to air "Ironside," "The Rockford Files," "Magnum P.I."

There's a channel in Toronto, (VISION TV), I don't know if it's seen outside of Ontario, and this year the one big change they seem to have made to their schedule is the addition of "Ironside" at 5pm EST, Monday to Friday beginning on September 1, 2015. The year before they added "Marcus Welby M.D." and it looks like that show will remain in the lineup. They air "Columbo" Monday to Thursday, 8pm EST (an hour of a two hour movie daily, which equals a couple of episodes a week) and an episode of "MacMillan and Wife" every Thursday at 9pm EST. That's the closest thing to "retro" I've seen out there this fall.

I wouldn't pay extra for Comedy Gold or DejaView even before this new schedule. I don't think I'd watch Comedy Gold even if it was on free preview. It's very disappointing fall schedule.

Comedy Gold changed from TV Land Canada five years ago August (I think), and this is the absolute worst crap now.

Since the Golden Girls is one of my all time favourite shows, I get Comedy Gold by default since I only watch Deja Vu now.
I also watch Perfect Strangers and Archie Bunker's Place on Deja Vu.

I give Deja Vu more of a pass than Comedy Gold because I don't think that station has the $$ that Comedy Gold has. I say that because of all the infomercials that station shows. Bell who owns Comedy Gold would have more $$ than Shaw who owns Deja Vu.

I do watch Marcus Welby on Vision TV. I'm also excited about seeing Ironside for the first time.
I especially love seeing guest stars in roles before they became famous.
